'Buddy's Saddest Death Happens After Freddy Escapes
Buddy (2026) isn’t a horror movie afraid to push boundaries. Whether it’s endangering its primarily child cast in a variety of ways or ruining your childhood with Buddy’s unsettling visage, Buddy is bound to stir strong feelings in its viewers. Right from the word go, Buddy is an onslaught of horrific imagery that’s aimed to shock and awe, but few, if any, expected to feel sad by the time the film ended. That may seem weird for a horror movie, but what’s especially strange is that the film’s saddest moment happens at the very end.
Of course, the climax features plenty of gonzo carnage and death. There are dead mail carriers, children, and weird anthropomorphic couches, but very few of them hit emotionally. They were just cattle for the slaughter. But the two deaths at the end of Buddy hit different. The day is saved, Freddy has escaped the TV World, and she can be reunited with her family. But her most important friends won’t be with her, and I’m not talking about her child co-stars.
Who Is Killed After Freddy Escapes From Buddy?
After a chase through the TV World, complete with Buddy eviscerating himself just to get Freddy back under his thrall, just when Freddy thinks that she’ll get a happy ending, the rug is pulled out from under her.
After she escapes the TV World and reenters the real world, she joyfully tells her longtime companions Strappy the backpack and Mr. Mailbox that they’ve escaped from Buddy, only to realize that they’re no longer with her. Well, technically they still are, but both lost their sentience. In the TV World, Strappy was always cautioning Freddy about what to do and if something was risky, and Mr. Mailbox, while only able to speak for a little bit, was a friendly face to Freddy and the kids. However, because they were removed from the TV World, they lost that imaginative spark that brought them to life and simply became objects. In other words, they died.
It makes sense when you stop to think about it. While we don’t know exactly what the TV World is, we do know that there are certain rules and laws governing life there. Just as we know that Buddy can only reset his show, It’s Buddy, by hugging a child and singing his song, so too are the characters of the TV World bound to it. It’s why Buddy doesn’t enter the real world to abduct kids, instead using the TV to suck people in.
While Buddy could have made it possible for characters from the TV World to crossover into ours, much in the same way humans could enter the TV World, sadly, that just wasn’t meant to be. These are two different planes of existence, so if Freddy was going to escape with Strappy and Mr. Mailbox, there was only one logical outcome.
What Makes Strappy And Mr. Mailbox's Deaths Especially Tragic
After being hunted and tortured by Buddy, you would think that the film would cut some slack for its two most put-upon residents of the TV World, but sometimes, reality isn’t kind, leaving us with an ending that’s tragic for multiple reasons.
Let’s be clear here: if it weren’t for Strappy and Mr. Mailbox, Freddy would have been caught by Buddy. Strappy was the reason that Buddy tripped, and Freddy used Mr. Mailbox as the weapon to finally impale and kill the demonic orange unicorn. They were instrumental in ending his reign of terror, and all they got for it was being killed. Now, sure, there’s a possibility they could be revived if they are placed back in the TV World, but in what reality would Freddy ever want to go back? Heck, can she even go back now that Buddy’s dead?
But it makes sense why Freddy was in tears over their deaths. With her memories of the real world wiped away and only starting to come back, all she knows is life in the TV World. Strappy has been her closest friend for as long as she’s been there, and Mr. Mailbox was someone she wanted to protect after Buddy ripped off his mouth. To her, it’s like losing a twin sibling and a sick dog. After all that they’ve been through together, of course she’s going to cry. She doesn’t mourn Oliver, Hannah, or even her mom. She watched them die. But Strappy and Mr. Mailbox? They survived. They made it out, except, not really. Reality had other plans, and that’s true tragedy.
