3 Questions A 'Backrooms' Sequel Could Answer (And 2 New Mysteries It Might Create)
Kane Parsons’ Backrooms (2026) is a totally original concept inspired by a YouTube series born from a single viral image. It’s a testament to the creativity of humans and one of the most successful horror films of 2026.
Of course, its popularity also raises more questions. While Parsons confirmed he’s working on finding a co-writer for a Backrooms sequel, we still have a wait before its release. In the meantime, we have more than a few questions about the last film and the many more mysteries that could come from the sequel.
What Really Happened To Mary?
At the end of Backrooms, Async “rescues” Mary and has one of its top scientists interrogate her. However, as she questions whether or not she will be set free, there’s a Still Life of her in the Backrooms in its own interrogation room, thus revealing two things.
One, while she’s out of the Backrooms, it remembers and places her Still Life in a location that she was never in while in the realm. Therefore, it could be omnipresent in time or, even scarier, its influence is spreading deeper into our world. As Async keeps the portals open, it’s remembering the facility and gaining more strength.
Secondly, there’s also the question of whether Mary will be set free. The YouTube series proved that, unfortunately, those captured by Async are never set free. Therefore, a sequel could see her being more hands-on in exploring the Backrooms or as another imprisoned victim.
What’s the Backrooms’ Origin Story?
The only thing we know about the Backrooms, from the film and YouTube series, is that it’s alive, in another dimension, and was meant to be used for storage by Async. Aside from that, we still don’t know why it exists the way that it does. While some horror stories thrive in the mystery of what something cosmically horrifying could be, the Backrooms could benefit from a clearer origin.
Async has proven it knows very little about these ever-expanding rooms, and it’s not like the truth can stay hidden forever. In one film, we learned more than ever, and a sequel could take things even further. The Backrooms is scary because of what the truth could be, and if it’s just a living concept fueled by memory, that means it could mindlessly consume as it tries to enter the real world, as teased in the film.
What Happened To The Missing Characters?
Missing people have always been an allure of Kane Parsons’ Backrooms universe, and Backrooms 2 has an opportunity to give us answers about what happened to some of those who went missing. This goes double for the people who were killed and disappeared in the film.
Aside from the YouTube series, there was at least one girl who was found decapitated in Clark’s fridge, but it’s never made clear if Pirate Clark got her or the real one. A sequel could further explore, even for a moment, how long he was gone and if he became a killer.
More Levels Could Appear In The Backrooms
According to Parsons, his version of the Backrooms never entertains the idea of levels in the traditional sense. While the Backrooms Wiki gives significance to various levels and how they change in the Backrooms, that’s not the type of horror Parsons wanted to use.
Even still, he’s shown that there are still levels to his Backrooms, from the Poolrooms to a sideways level that feels more organic and messy than the level Clark is introduced to. With that in mind, it shows that we could see more distorted types of Backrooms levels, just like the ones in his found-footage videos and more complex means to access them. Even no-clipping randomly could show its spread of more powerful levels, for example.
More Entities Other Than Still Life Replicas Could Appear
The Still Lives found in the Backrooms were a shocking revelation in Kane Parsons’ film, but with the introduction of these entities, it also raises the question of what more could exist in the Backrooms.
From the YouTube films, we already know that the Lifeform Fellow is something that exists in the halls, and with it, there’s also a mystery of how it evolved, if at all. The Backrooms remember things differently from reality and tries to bring them to life. But with a bigger budget, Parsons could even pull from the other lore tied to the Backrooms to create other terrifying creatures or develop things scarier than Still Lives.
