Kane Parsons’ Backrooms (2026) has become one of the biggest horror movies of 2026. For being in theaters less than a week at the time of writing, that’s a feat on its own. Backrooms explores the viral phenomenon of a space in another dimension of endless office spaces that are filled with grim entities.

In a climactic scene, the film’s lead, Carl, faces a violent end from one of these entities. But the scene before it begs the question that maybe what we saw wasn’t as accurate as we think. So, is Carl actually dead in Backrooms?

Carl’s Death In The Backrooms Seemed Definitive

Pirate Carl attacking Mary in Backrooms

In the third act of Backrooms, Mary finds herself in the realm that Carl had manically talked about days prior. After stumbling across one of his drawings on the wall, he eerily emerges from around the corner of a hallway, and as Pirate Carl approaches, he puts Mary in a chokehold.

Now tied up in a makeshift house, Carl hypothesizes that the Still Life beings he encountered were just poor reconstructions of memories the Backrooms took from Carl. But they can’t feel pain and, as he cuts a chunk out of one, can be eaten.

When Mary breaks through to Carl and tells him she can’t help him, Pirate Carl, a manifestation of his dark emotions, appears. As Carly tries to appeal to it, it begins to eat him as Carl screams in terror and agony. The fact that he felt pain in the first place should prove that he’s not a Still Life, but it’s possible there’s more to uncover.

Carl’s Speech To Mary Teases An Evolution In The Backrooms

Everything Carl said about the Still Lives he encountered was true, but what he doesn’t know is that since the Backrooms is a living space, it has evolved over time. In the earliest episode of the Kane Parsons YouTube series, one entity was made of the bacteria found in the intestines. It was the Backroom’s attempt at life.

Over time, as it spread and more people no-clipped into the space, the Backrooms’ Still Lives grew more advanced. By the time Carl got there, Pirate Carl represented how far the Backrooms had evolved. With that in mind, it’s possible that the Carl talking to Mary was a Still Life as well, considering how uncharacteristic he acted in the scene.

If Carl Isn’t Dead, What Did Pirate Carl Eat?

Theorizing a possibility is one thing, but if the Carl Mary encountered wasn’t a human, then what was he? Playing more on the idea of the Backrooms being alive, it stands to reason that the Carl talking to Mary was a Still Life. But rather than adapt a memory, it was creating him from scratch.

Carl understood the Backrooms, or more so, he understood that he couldn’t understand the Backrooms, and he found a purpose there. It’s possible he taught it about himself simply by talking to the space or the Still Lives there, which would explain why, when Pirate Carl attacked, he screamed and was bleeding red. There’s also the fact that others were killed in the film that added to the Backrooms’ understanding of the human body.

Carl’s worship of the Still Lives in the space could also tease that being bitten by one could be the start or end of his transition into one. We saw Pirate Carl dragging his body but not the after. And there was a precedent that Carl and Pirate Carl shared a loose companionship. If they were so close, why did Pirate Carl take a massive bite out of him? Ultimately, all points lead to Carl losing his mind and facing the consequences of his life at the jaws of Pirate Carl, but there’s always a chance that there is more to the scene than meets the eye.
