Every Rick and Morty (2013) fan remembers meeting Mr. Poopybutthole for the first time. Season 2, Episode 4, "Total Rickall," ends with Beth shooting Rick's "longtime family friend" in a jaw-dropping twist that leaves him soaked in blood and proclaiming, "Oh wee. Is this how I die?" The good news is that Mr. Poopybutthole doesn't die, as the episode's post-credits scene proves. In fact, Rick and Morty continues to offer glimpses into his story, which has gone from hopeful to downright tragic.

The Rick and Morty Season 9 finale's post-credits scene reunites us with Mr. Poopybutthole once more, and this time, his fate feels even more uncertain than it did in "Total Rickall." Here's a recap of Mr. Poopybutthole's story so far, and what the after-credits scene sets up for Season 10.

Mr. Poopybutthole Experiences Some Highs

After Mr. Poopybutthole's tragic accident in "Total Rickall," his next appearance comes in Season 2, Episode 10, "The Wedding Squanchers," which kicks off his now-signature move of announcing the next season. Here, Poopybutthole is alive and well, but with a limp and apparently a high tolerance for painkillers (like, really high).

By the Season 3 finale, things are looking bright for Mr. Poopybutthole, who has married Amy and started a family. Not long after this, Rick and Morty released a short, aptly titled "The Poop in My Shorts," which essentially provides more background. Not only did Mr. Poopybutthole marry Amy and have Poopy Junior, but he graduated from college. This leads into Professor Poopybutthole, who unfortunately loses his job, kick-starting his downfall.

Season 5 Marks The Fall Of Mr. Poopybutthole

With his job gone, Amy is next. In Season 5, Episode 10, Rickmurai Jack," Mr. Poopybutthole reveals that Amy left and took Poopy Junior with her. The result is a depressed Mr. Poopybutthole alone in a sad-looking apartment and fantasies of turning evil himself, thanks to reflecting on Evil Morty's recent plot

Season 6 gives Mr. Poopybutthole a tidbit of positivity before tearing it away again. After becoming shredded from lifting weights, he breaks his legs squatting… and those darn painkillers come back. In the Season 7 Poopybutthole-centric episode, "How Poopy Got His Pop Back," he struggles with sobriety. However, the episode leaves him on a relative high note… or so it seems? In true Rick and Morty fashion, cynicism and sci-fi enter.

By Season 7's finale, Mr. Poopybutthole has a portal gun, which he uses to find a dimension where he is still happily married to Amy and replaces her husband with himself. However, it's not so easy to pull a stunt like that on Amy. In Season 8's finale, Amy, who is something of a science nerd herself, confesses to her fellow researchers that she suspects this Mr. Poopybutthole isn't her real husband.

Does 'Rick And Morty' Season 9 Kill Mr. Poopybutthole… Again?

Season 9's post-credits starts with the usual hijinks. Mr. Poopybutthole narrates exactly what's going on, and it apparently involves Amy using his body to open up a multiversal waypoint to get back her husband. However, once the fourth-dimensional thrusters get activated, the entire lab (ship?) malfunctions and the thrusters (I think? The science is hard here.) explode. The other Poopybuttholes evacuate, but our Mr. Poopybutthole is still locked up.

Does he survive? Perhaps. Is he transported to another dimension? Maybe. As usual, the finale post-credits leaves us on a big cliffhanger as far as Mr. Poopybutthole goes. While "Total Rickall" gave us closure that Poopybutthole is alive and well, no such comfort exists here. It's doubtful he'll die considering his fan-favorite statue and recurring gag. However, Rick and Morty isn't afraid to pull some punches, so declaring him safe isn't really possible, either.

Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to wait until Rick and Morty Season 10 to get closure on Mr. Poopybutthole. But as of right now, his storyline is turning out to be just as sci-fi and dark as Rick's.

The fractured domestic lives of a nihilistic mad scientist and his anxious grandson are further complicated by their inter-dimensional misadventures.
