Heartstopper Forever Ending, Explained: Do Nick & Charlie Stay Together?
Heartstopper Forever is the last hurrah for Nick, Charlie, and the rest of their friendship group.
From that very first “Hi” in 2022, Netflix’s Heartstopper has been a leader in queer representation as the gentle love story of Nick and Charlie blossomed before our eyes.
The show, which is based on the graphic novel series by Alice Oseman, will be sorely missed — but it’s fair to say that it went out on a high. Partially based on the short story, ‘Nick and Charlie,’ Heartstopper Forever takes place across one school year as several of the characters prepare for the next stage of their lives beyond school and sixth form — and it couldn’t be more of a fitting ending.
It’s a classic coming-of-age love story, but like all romances, the characters have their fair share of challenges. So, if you want to dig a little deeper or just can’t take the uncertainty, this spoiler-filled breakdown of the ending of Heartstopper Forever, and what it means for all the characters, is for you.
Do Nick and Charlie Break Up?
It’s the moment we’ve all been dreading, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s true — Nick and Charlie do break up.
Throughout the movie, Nick’s anxiety about going away to Leeds University is palpable. Feeling unable to express himself, he tries to deal with his feelings by drinking and getting perhaps a little too aggressive during a rugby match, the latter of which leads him to A&E with a black eye. While Charlie tries several times to get Nick to open up, he won’t budge.
Things come to a head at a house party, with both of them becoming convinced that the other would be better off without them. This leads to a sudden breakup. In the aftermath, Charlie’s mental health struggles resurge, but he gets through it with the help of his friends, family, and therapist.
After a while, Charlie finds the disposable camera he gifted Nick earlier in the movie under his bed. As a romantic gesture, he gets the photos developed and posts them through his door along with a request to meet at the beach where they had their first date. Obviously, Nick ends up going, the two reconcile, and everything is right with the world again.
The movie then ends with the pair and their friends going to prom together as they celebrate the next stages of their lives. In an epilogue, Charlie travels to Leeds to visit Nick, with the pair evidently stronger than ever.
What Happens To The Other Heartstopper Characters?
While Nick and Charlie manage to weather the storm, one relationship that doesn’t survive is Elle and Tao. Elle is set to go to Berlin to become an artist, and the pair struggle with the prospect of being separated throughout the film. This leads them to break up and get back together multiple times. In the end, the breakup sticks.
The pair share one last dance at prom, and in a conversation with Nick, Tao says he’s (mostly) at peace with the circumstances and knows that Elle and the others will always be in his life. Later, in the epilogue, someone compliments Elle’s painting of Tao in Berlin — only for Tao himself to show up, too. Do they get back together? Who knows, but the pair certainly seem glad to see one another.
Meanwhile, Darcy and Tara remain stronger than ever throughout the film. In the epilogue, we see them head for the Eurostar to embark on an interrailing gap year.
In a surprise to nobody, Imogen comes out as a lesbian. She keenly supports Sahar, who has embarked on a solo music career following the breakup of their band. Again, it isn’t clear if the two are together, but they do have a past, so it's a possibility.
As for Isaac, he has gone from hiding behind a book to a novelist himself. He can be seen in the cafe where Charlie works writing his book. Michael and Tori even got their time to shine, with Michael discovering that he got into the Olympic ice skating team.
When all is said and done, Heartstopper Forever is the perfect ending. Even with a hint of bittersweetness, it’s clear that everyone is going to be just fine.
