Denzel Washington lost Best Actor for Malcolm X (65th Academy Awards)

In 1992, Denzel Washington took on the titular role in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. Playing a larger-than-life historical figure is no easy task, but Washington did it. Washington captures everything about Malcolm X, from his voice and looks to how he carried himself to his oratory skills and passion. Very few actors in cinematic history have achieved a transformation of this caliber. However, at the 65th Academy Awards, the award for Best Actor went to Pacino for Scent of a Woman. Lee criticized Washington's loss, suggesting the Academy only awarded Pacino to “make up” for not awarding him in the past.

Ralph Fiennes lost Best Supporting Actor for Schindler’s List (66th Academy Awards)

Ralph Fiennes starred in Schindler’s List as SS officer Amon Göth. His role was not an easy one, as he was tasked with bringing not just an SS officer to life but one with a reputation of pure, incomprehensible evilness. Fiennes does an astounding job, truly conveying the evil of indifference and hatred with a genuinely bone-chilling performance. It was even more impressive because it was his breakthrough role, although it is quite rare for breakthrough performances to win Oscars. Ultimately, the 66th Academy Awards chose Tommy Lee Jones for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Fugitive. 

Saving Private Ryan lost Best Picture (71st Academy Awards)

Saving Private Ryan is a film that was as highly regarded upon release as it is today. Upon release, it was met with widespread critical acclaim for its brutally realistic depiction of war, jaw-dropping scale, and incredible performance of Tom Hanks. Well-regarded by critics, audiences, and veterans, Saving Private Ryan was a shoo-in for Best Picture. However, at the 71st Academy Awards, the film shockingly lost Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love. The loss was so upsetting that Shakespeare in Love’s production company, Miramax, was accused of launching an Oscars campaign that was too aggressive. 

Alfred Hitchcock never won Best Director

While there isn’t just one particularly painful snub that stands out in Alfred Hitchcock’s career, those looking back on his legendary legacy can’t understand how he never once won the Best Director award at the Oscars. Hitchcock was a pioneer in filmmaking and had a profound influence on the suspense genre, earning him the moniker “Master of Suspense.” Between Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Rear Window, there’s no shortage of iconic films demonstrating his director's skill and ability to create true cinematic art. Yet, despite five nominations, Hitchcock never won the Oscar for Best Director.

Shelley Duvall never nominated for an Oscar

Shelley Duvall was one of the greatest actresses of her time. Dubbed one of the best “scream queens” of all time, she offered profound contributions to the horror genre and helped drive multiple films, including The Shining, to critical acclaim. Her performances in The Shining and 3 Women were particularly Oscar-worthy. Despite her incredible legacy, Duvall was never nominated for an Oscar. Silo

In Silo, a civilization lives underground in a giant bunker known as the silo. They’re told that they must live underground because the world above has become toxic and deadly, but as the series goes on, many in the silo start asking questions, leading to some dire consequences. What makes Silo so great is that it has tons of twists and turns, and many are totally unexpected.

Blitz

Blitz takes place during the bombing of London in World War II. It follows a mixed-race child as he races through the city to find his mother, all while having to grapple with England’s own history of hate and racism. The movie was directed by Steve McQueen and stars Saoirse Ronan, and has earned numerous nominations at award shows across the world.

Prime Target

In Prime Target, Leo Woodall (who many will remember from The White Lotus) plays a genius mathematician who discovers a code within prime numbers. But his discovery comes with an unintended consequence…governments and corporations around the world are desperate to silence him because that code poses a great security risk to everyone on the planet.

Fly Me to the Moon 

Fly Me to the Moon has a very interesting and unique plot. It’s a rom-com set in a fictionalized version of the 60s during the heat of the Space Race. The film follows a publicity agent (Scarlett Johansson) who is hired to help boost NASA’s appeal. But she’s also given a secret task: film a fake moon landing in case the real mission fails. The movie plays with historical facts, while also bringing in a lot of well-known conspiracy theories, creating a really fun and funny film.

Mythic Quest 

Workplace comedies have been on television for decades…but none have been as unique as Mythic Quest. The show follows a game studio that makes a popular MMORPG (that’s Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game for you non-nerds out there) called Mythic Quest. For those who don’t know, the gaming industry is totally insane, so this workplace comedy shows a wild industry that rarely gets the spotlight it needs in the media.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Based on the true story of the Osage murders, Killers of the Flower Moon follows a white family who orchestrates the murder of dozens of Osage tribespeople to inherit their oil headrights. The movie is a bitter reminder of how cruel people can be when wealth and racism collide, and the fact that it’s all true makes it even more shocking. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Shrinking

In Shrinking, Jason Segel plays a therapist who is grieving the loss of his wife. But as Segel grows more distraught, the advice he gives his patients becomes more (and hilariously) unpredictable. Shrinking has earned Segel both an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination, and the series also stars Hollywood legend Harrison Ford.

Wolfs

In Wolfs, a Manhattan DA finds herself in trouble when her young lover accidentally dies in her hotel room. To save her career, she calls a “fixer”, someone whose job is to take care of the dirty little secrets of the rich and powerful. But unknown to her, the hotel’s owner has also called in a fixer, and the two (played by George Clooney and Brad Pitt) butt-heads. But to get the job done, the duo will need to work together.

In the film, Hulk plays a pivotal role. He teams up with the remaining Avengers five years after Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of humanity in The Blip in an attempt to bring the disappeared back. Avengers: Endgame boasts a breathtaking scale, riveting superhero/time travel premise, and serves as the perfect finale to the MCU’s Infinity Saga while giving viewers a new idealized iteration of Hulk.

The Avengers

The Avengers sees the titular superhero team assemble to stop Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from using the Tesseract to launch a full-scale invasion of Earth. The film marks the MCU debut of Ruffalo as Hulk, who Edward Norton previously played. Initially, The Avengers recruits Banner for his scientific skills. However, when Earth needs him most, he lets Hulk out with the iconic line, “That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always angry.” In addition to serving as a significant part of Hulk’s MCU history, The Avengers is a groundbreaking superhero crossover film with fantastic visuals and performances across the board.

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk is the only official solo film of the Hulk in the MCU. The 2008 movie follows Bruce Banner (Edward Norton), whose life is altered by a failed gamma radiation experiment. As he searches for a cure for his new Hulk condition, he is hunted by Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt), who is desperate to weaponize him. It’s a vital introduction to Hulk and Ross and a light-hearted, fast-paced, thrilling superhero movie. However, The Incredible Hulk is a bit restrained by its origin story premise and initial disconnection to the MCU.

Hulk

Five years before the MCU arrived, Ang Lee directed the standalone movie Hulk. The film follows Bruce Banner (Eric Bana), a brilliant scientist haunted by his traumatic childhood. After a lab accident leads him to become the Hulk, he is forced to confront his past and his estranged father, David Banner (Nick Nolte). Hulk doesn’t boast most modern superhero films' sophisticated CGI and action-packed premise. However, that’s what makes it so good. It’s one of the few movies that focuses less on monster smashing and actually delves into Banner’s darker comic book history and the psyche of a man who feels he’s a monster. Dark, dramatic, and emotionally powerful, Hulk is one of the most creative takes on the Marvel character.

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War sees the Avengers assemble to stop warlord Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones and wiping out half of humanity. The film marks Hulk’s reunion with the Avengers after his stint on Sakaar. Interestingly, he is at odds with his alter ego and cannot summon his Hulk form. Hence, Avengers: Infinity War is more of a Banner film. Meanwhile, the film is slightly overstuffed, meaning Banner only gets a supporting role. Still, viewers will be amused by the latest chapter in his complicated relationship with Hulk and will have their breath taken away by the sheer scale of Avengers: Infinity War as it successfully brings numerous heroes across over a dozen films together for a grand finale.

Planet Hulk

Planet Hulk is an animated movie that adapts the Marvel comic book storyline of the same name. The film sees Hulk (Rick D. Wasserman) crash land on the planet Sakaar, where Red King (Mark Hildreth) pits him and the residents of the planet against each other in gladiatorial-like games. However, the warriors soon bond and formulate a plan to usurp the Red King. Planet Hulk largely stays faithful to the source material, offers a strong voice cast, and boasts the typical nostalgia and entertainment of Marvel’s animated works. However, it feels a bit rushed as it tries to condense a significant comic storyline into a short runtime.

Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World introduces a new Hulk to the MCU. The movie follows Sam Wilson (Mackie) as he officially takes on the Captain America mantle. However, he and newly elected President Ross (Ford) butt heads when the country is thrown into crisis by an international conspiracy. To further complicate matters, Ross is hiding a Hulk-sized secret. Captain America: Brave New World is action-packed, politically resonant, and proves Wilson is the right man to bear the Captain America shield. Although Red Hulk only plays a minor role, he’s the movie's highlight and offers some of the best Hulk smashing the MCU has seen in a while.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron sees the Avengers unite to fight Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey, Jr.) AI creation, Ultron (James Spader), which has become sentient with a penchant for villainy. The movie marks an important chapter in Hulk’s MCU history, as it sees a relationship develop between Banner and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Despite their budding relationship, Banner can’t let go of his fear of his alter ego, believing Earth is safer without him. While Avengers: Age of Ultron is quite the dazzling spectacle, it could have used a little more time developing characters like Hulk and delving deeper into its themes of AI and good vs. evil.

The Incredible Hulk Returns

The Incredible Hulk Returns is an excellent watch for viewers interested in Hulk’s campier, humbler screen roots. The made-for-TV film is a continuation of the TV series The Incredible Hulk. Bill Bixby returns as Bruce Banner, and Lou Ferrigno returns as his alter-ego Hulk. In the movie, Banner has spent two years in human form and is on the brink of finding a permanent cure until his life is turned upside down by the arrival of Thor (Eric Allan Kramer). Naturally, as a 1980s TV film, The Incredible Hulk Returns is a pretty campy, low-budget movie. Despite the poor visual effects, it boasts good performances and an interesting storyline.

The Trial of the Incredible Hulk

The Trial of the Incredible Hulk is the sequel to The Incredible Hulk Returns. The film follows Banner, who is framed for a crime and seeks legal representation from Daredevil (Rex Smith). Adding Daredevil to the mix certainly makes The Trial of the Incredible Hulk intriguing. However, the film struggles to find its footing as it shifts between a superhero movie and a cliché courtroom drama. Ultimately, it’s a fun, entertaining, and nostalgic film, though it struggles with visuals, pacing, and storyline.

The Death of the Incredible Hulk

The Death of the Incredible Hulk is the final film continuation of The Incredible Hulk series. In the film, Banner is once again on the cusp of a cure for his condition. However, when spies infiltrate the lab where Banner is undergoing experimental treatment, the cure is disrupted, and the Hulk is unleashed. Unfortunately, The Death of the Incredible Hulk struggles even more with storyline and pacing. It feels rushed and doesn’t give the Hulk the grand outing the title suggests. While the acting is still strong, the movie offers little else to fans of the Hulk.

Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous

Starting just before the events of Jurassic World and taking place concurrently as the park is overrun with dinosaurs, the Netflix animated series Camp Cretaceous is a surprisingly good time. The series centers around an invite-only camp on Isla Nublar for dino-obsessed kids that’s run by Jurassic World. But when the park falls apart, so does the camp. Camp Cretaceous had a great cast including Jenna Ortega and some awesome guest stars like Bill Nye, Glen Powell, and Jameela Jamil.

Jurassic World Dominion

It’s hard to tell when Jurassic World jumped the shark. It was either the volcano eruption in Fallen Kingdom or the dinosaur-overrun planet in Dominion. But in all fairness…it doesn’t really matter because it’s so totally wild to watch. In Jurassic World Dominion, dinosaurs have now made their way across the globe. Also, there’s giant grasshoppers that are about to destroy the human race, *and* Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill all reprise their roles. The movie is nuttier than a jar of Jiff, but it’s so bonkers you can’t look away. It’s the action movie equivalent of a guilty pleasure.

In 1979, Phantasm, an independent film, premiered as a decidedly strange and ambiguous horror movie with lesser-known actors. It would become a testament to the power of indie films as, four decades later, audiences still hail it as one of the best horror movies ever made. Written and directed by Don Coscarelli, Phantasm centers on the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), a superhuman mortician who begins shrinking, reanimating, and enslaving corpses. However, its most considerable appeal was its ambiguity and the way that viewers across decades have watched and come to different interpretations of its meaning. 

After ending on a cliffhanger, Phantasm quickly received a sequel, Phantasm II. In this sequel, Mike (James LeGros) continues his mission to defeat the Tall Man. While most dismiss his claims as delusions, he finds allies in his brother’s friend, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), and Liz (Paula Irvine), a woman with whom he has a psychic connection. The sequel moved more towards conventional horror as it ramped up the gore and campiness, although it maintained its surreal, dream-like premise, earning mixed reviews from critics. 

Phantasm’s subsequent two sequels, Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead and Phantasm IV: Oblivion, were direct-to-video releases that brought back Baldwin as Mike. These movies delve more into sci-fi as Mike and Reggie probe the Tall Man’s dabbling in dimensions and even travel back in time to witness his origin story as Jebediah Morningside. 

After Phantasm IV: Oblivion, Coscarelli took an 18-year break from the Phantasm franchise. The final film, Phantasm: Ravager, premiered in 2016. While Coscarelli produced and co-wrote the movie, David Hartman took over as director. In the film, Reggie is now in a nursing home, though he continues to access different dimensions through his dreams of pursuing the Tall Man with Mike. While the film received some criticism for its convoluted plot and poor CGI, it served as a worthy conclusion as it continued probing its theme of death/grief while still leaving viewers questioning whether the story is reality or a dream. It also marked the final appearance of Scrimm as the legendary horror icon Tall Man before his passing in 2016.

In 1998, the Hideo Nakata-directed Ring premiered. The horror film would grow into a sprawling media franchise, mesmerizing American and Japanese audiences and bringing about a resurgence in Japanese horror. The Ring franchise began in 1991 with Koji Suzuki’s Ring novel. It was first adapted to the screen in the TV film Ring (1995). The earliest adaptation is one of the most faithful to the source material, but its lower budget/quality led to the film receiving little fanfare. It was ultimately Ring (1998) that kickstarted the franchise. The horror film follows journalist Reiko Asakawa (Nanako Matsushima) as she investigates the death of her niece, Tomoko (Yuko Takeuchi), who allegedly died after watching a cursed videotape. She enlists the help of her ex-husband, Ryūji Takayama (Hiroyuki Sanada), to find the tape and get to the bottom of its curse.

At the time of Ring’s release, slasher horror films were the norm. Hence, Ring stood out for its unique premise of a cursed video tape, lack of jump scares, and the decision to have most deaths occur offscreen. The idea of an unseen killer and the use of tension and mystery for horror had a lasting impact on Western cinema while sparking a J-horror renaissance.

Ring was filmed simultaneously with its sequel, Spiral, also released in 1998. After receiving criticism for a convoluted plot that contradicted the first movie, Spiral was initially forgotten. As a result, Nakata was brought back to direct an alternative sequel to Ring, Ring 2, which follows Mai (Miki Nakatani), a young woman determined to find and save Reiko and her son from the vengeful spirit Sadako (Rie Inō). Due to its financial success, Ring 2 was followed by a prequel, Ring 0: Birthday, which further explores the lore of Sadako (Yukie Nakama). Two decades later, Ring 2 finally received a sequel with Nakata’s Sadako. The film follows a young girl (Himeka Himejima) who is believed to be the reincarnation of Sadako.

Between Ring 0: Birthday and Sadako, the Spiral timeline was revived with the sequels Sadako 3D, Sadako 3D 2, and Sadako DX, as well as the crossover movie Sadako vs. Kayako. In addition, the American remake series began in 2002 with The Ring. 

In the remake, Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson play reporter Rachel Keller and her ex-husband Noah Clay, respectively, as they investigate a cursed videotape connected to the spirit of Samara Morgan (Daveigh Chase). The film paid tribute to the original’s use of psychological horror and suspense, earning the direct sequel The Ring Two and the second sequel, Rings, which takes place 15 years after The Ring.

Although no new Ring movies are currently in development, further sequels, remakes, or crossovers remain possible.

Dario Argento’s Suspiria premiered in 1977. Thomas De Quincey’s Suspiria de Profundis essay collection loosely inspired this supernatural horror movie. It would attain cult status, spawning a film series that spanned three decades and influenced the horror genre for years to come. Suspiria is the first movie in Argento’s trilogy, The Three Mothers. The film follows Suzy (Jessica Harper), an American ballet student who moves to Germany to attend a prestigious dance school. As grisly deaths and supernatural phenomena plague the school, Suzy realizes powerful witchcraft is at play. Despite mixed initial views, critics now regard Suspiria as a cinematic masterpiece. In 1980, Suspiria’s sequel, Inferno, premiered. Inferno capitalizes on Suspiria’s flashiness and grandeur and officially establishes the lore of the series, revealing that the witch in the first film was part of a triumvirate of powerful witches, The Three Mothers, who manipulated events around them to attain world domination.

After Inferno, Argento took a long break from The Three Mothers trilogy while working on other projects. The final film in the series, Mother of Tears, finally arrived in 2007. The last installment occurs in Rome, where museum worker Sarah (Asia Argento) accidentally unleashes the witch Mater Lachrymarum (Moran Atias). It was a bloody, exhilarating, and excessive conclusion to the trilogy. However, Suspiria’s legacy wouldn’t end there.

A remake of Suspiria was announced a year after Mother of Tears premiered. By 2015, Luca Guadagnino announced he would direct the movie. However, he would later classify Suspiria (2018) as a tribute to the original rather than a proper remake. The film follows Susie Bannon (Dakota Johnson), a ballet student who begins training at Helen Markos’ (Tilda Swinton) ballet academy. Shortly after her arrival, the school faces accusations of witchcraft.

Similar to the original Suspiria movie, Guadagnino’s tribute received mixed reactions. Some critics hailed it as a masterpiece for its complex themes and daring attempt to match the original's innovative cinematography, but others criticized the narrative. While Suspiria’s poor box office performance makes a sequel unlikely, the influence of the original and remake will likely continue impacting and inspiring the horror genre.

The same year Spider-Man got a new animated series, he also got a spin-off show. In Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Parker teams up with Iceman from X-Men and a new original character named Firestar. The trio team up as the “Spider-Friends” to fight villains. 

Spider-Man (1994-1997)

Spider-Man was again rebooted as an animated series in 1994. Running for five seasons, the show saw Parker do his thing as Spider-Man to help save the city from villains. The finale also involved multiple Spider-Men from different universes, being a precursor to the Spiderverse plotline that’s been revisited numerous times since.

Spider-Man Unlimited (1999-2000)

Spider-Man Unlimited had a darker, more mature tone and sees Spidey get framed as a villain after the Daily Bugle blames him for a missing astronaut. The series also brought on Venom and Carnage as major villains for the first time in a Spider-Man TV series.

Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2006-2009)

Released during the era of the Sam Raimi films, The New Animated Series takes place during the same timeline as the films (making Spider-Man a college student) and fills in the gap between the first two movies. It also had a robust voice cast including Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Loeb. 

The Spectacular Spider-Man (2012-2016)

In 2012, Spider-Man was rebooted yet again with The Spectacular Spider-Man, this time placing him back in high school. The series was also released the same year that Andrew Garfield revived the character in the movie The Amazing Spider-Man. 

Spider-Man (2017-2020)

In 2017, Spider-Man got a reboot yet again, and again it was released the same year as another film reboot: Spider-Man: Homecoming (which premiered just three years after the second Andrew Garfield movie).

Spidey and His Amazing Friends (2021-Present)

Designed for a much younger audience, Spidey and His Amazing Friends now places Parker and his friends as grade school students. But Spidey and his allies like Spin and Ghost-Spider still tackle bad guys…just with a little less action and violence.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2025)

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set in an alternate timeline that explores Peter Parker’s origin story. It also changes up the modern MCU plotline by making Norman Osborn Peter’s mentor instead of Tony Stark. The show has a pretty famous voice cast as well, starring Colman Domingo, Hugh Dancy, and Charlie Cox.

After delays because of the LA forest fires, the 97th Academy Awards have finally announced its list of nominations. For the 2025 Oscars, Netflix’s Emilia Perez is leading the charge with a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Picture. Not far behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, which each have 10 nominations. But those films will see some hefty competition from other movies that have scored multiple nominations each – like The Substance, Anora, Nickel Boys, and A Real Pain.

The nominations revealed a few surprises as well. Many assumed Angelina Jolie would earn an Oscar nomination for her biopic Maria, but the film was only nominated for one award, Best Cinematography. Another surprise was that Colman Domingo earned himself his second Oscar nomination for his role in Sing Sing. Nosferatu also surprised fans by earning a few nominations in categories like cinematography, costume design, and Makeup & Hairstyling.

Filmmaker Robert Eggers recently remade one of the most influential films and Dracula reimaginings of all time with Nosferatu (2024). However, it’s not the only indication that Dracula is making a comeback. Stoker introduced Dracula to the world in 1897, and filmmakers were eager to capitalize on the archetypal vampire. Nosferatu (1922) was one of the earliest adaptations of Stoker’s book, but it was unauthorized. Hence, names were changed, including switching Count Dracula to Count Orlok (Max Schreck). Its gothic, expressionist style would significantly influence further horror and vampire films.

By 1931, Universal Pictures attained the rights to the novel and released Dracula, the first sound film adaptation of Stoker’s work. The film follows Dracula (Bela Lugosi) as he arrives in London, where he enslaves Renfield (Dwight Frye) and begins targeting Mina Seward (Helen Chandler) due to his insatiable thirst for blood. To this day, many audiences consider Lugosi’s charming and sinister Dracula the best iteration, while the film’s creepy atmosphere further established Dracula as a household name. Dracula received two sequels, Dracula’s Daughter and Son of Dracula.

British film studio Hammer Film Productions produced another early Dracula series. Dracula (1958) starred Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as vampire hunter Doctor Van Helsing. The film made further strides toward the modern interpretation of Dracula, as Lee played the character as more menacing than charming, with red bloodshot eyes and fangs. Hammer would produce eight more Dracula movies, including The Brides of Dracula.

Dracula enjoyed a resurgence in 1992 with Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film moved away from the campy monster movies of the past, humanizing Dracula (Gary Oldman) as a lonely, immortal soul who falls for Jonathan Harker’s (Keanu Reeves) fiancée, Mina (Winona Ryder). It imbued the movie with a sense of eroticism, paying tribute to the perceived sexual metaphors of Stoker’s novel and paving the way for the 21st-century interpretations of Dracula.

The 21st century ushered in the most creative era of Dracula interpretations. The character has morphed from an overprotective father in Hotel Transylvania to a superhero villain in Blade: Trinity and then into a nightmare boss in Renfield. Additionally, some projects seek to expand the lore of Dracula beyond Stoker’s novel. The Last Voyage of the Demeter crafts an entire movie around a single chapter in Stoker’s book, while Steven Moffat and Matt Gatiss’ 2020 series Dracula seeks to carve out a new legend for the character. When speaking to MANGA Plus magazine, the creators of Sakamoto Days said, “Suzuki has a fondness for movies, and I believe it’s influenced by foreign hitman films like John Wick.” They said they thought Wick was cool and liked that the character was “collected, strong, and hard worker.”

The Equalizer 

In the MANGA Plus interview, another massive inspiration the creators named was The Equalizer. Fans can see the similarities as well – In the film, Denzel Washington plays an ex-marine who now spends his life working at a home improvement store. For almost a century, The Mummy has delighted audiences on the big screen. Audiences have long been drawn to creatures of the undead, such as Dracula or Frankenstein, making a resurrected mummy the perfect subject for a supernatural horror series. Universal Pictures’ The Mummy franchise began with the 1932 movie. In the film, archeologist Sir Joseph Whemple (Arthur Byron) stumbles upon the tomb of an ancient Egyptian priest who was buried alive. Instead, The Mummy’s Hand follows archeologists Steve Banning (Dick Foran) and Babe Jenson (Wallace Ford), who are lured on an expedition to the tomb of an undead mummy, Kharis (Tom Tyler). The campy horror movie received three direct sequels, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Ghost, and The Mummy’s Curse, with Lon Chaney, Jr. taking on the role of Kharis.

The Mummy went on hiatus for several decades before filmmakers decided a modern reimagining was necessary. The result was director Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy (1999), the most popular and recognizable of the Mummy movies. Robert Eggers’ name is bound to be tossed around this awards season as his gothic horror film Nosferatu blows audiences and critics away. This year’s most popular movies on streaming services shows that streamers in the United States are interested in watching acclaimed non-English language movies; Three of the year’s most popular streaming titles were not predominantly in English, including Godzilla Minus One (Japanese), Anatomy of a Fall (German/English/French) and The Zone of Interest (German). Interestingly, these were also the non-English language titles nominated in popular categories at the Academy Awards in 2024. There is also a strong correlation between streamers’ preferences and the nominations for Best Picture at the Oscars; Six of the top ten most popular streaming titles this year were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars back in March 2024.

There is also a noticeable trend of live-action movies outperforming animation, in contrast to the year’s domestic box office which featured four animated movies in 2024 (Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, Kung Fu Panda 4).

The 2025 Golden Globe winners have finally been announced, with movies such as The Brutalist, The Substance and Emilia Perez all picking up wins. Before the ceremony began, Emilia Pérez led the race with more nominations than any other movie, including 10 nominations such as "Best Musical or Comedy", "Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role" for Selena Gomez and "Best Director" for Jacques Audiard. The Brutalist, Conclave and Anora were among the other movies with the most nominations. On the night, Emilia Perez took home four awards while The Brutalist won three awards.

This year's most nominated TV show was The Bear with 5 categories, followed by Shogun and Only Murders in the Building, which are competing in 4 categories. On the night, Shōgun took home four awards while Netflix's Baby Reindeer took home two.

The 2025 awards show aired on Sunday, January 5 on CBS and via livestream on Paramount+. The event was hosted by Nikki Glaser, who was also competing for an award with her stand-up comedy, Nikki Glaser: Someday You'll Die. The award ultimately went to Ali Wong but Glazer was widely praised for her hosting skills throughout the occasion.
