'Cape Fear's Big Twist Makes A Major Change To The Source Material
Right off the bat, Apple TV's Cape Fear proved it isn't just a remake of Martin Scorsese's 1991 movie or J. Lee Thompson's 1962 film. It even veers off from the source material, John D. MacDonald's novel, The Executioners. Here, we get a very different version of Max Cady (Javier Bardem), who has an extra layer of sympathy to him. Menacing? Sure. Psychopathic? Probably. However, just like Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom (Patrick Wilson), you're not quite sure what to make of him.
Cady certainly seemed guilty of cutting off Zack's (Joe Anders) toe, even if he maintains his innocence. However, for the last few episodes, it seems pretty clear that Cady isn't working alone—and Cape Fear Season 1, Episode 4, proves it with the big reveal that Nevaeh Valentine (Malia Pyles), aka Angel and Amber, is Cady's daughter.
Nevaeh's Relationship with Max Cady Massively Changes Things

Just like the Apple TV series, the Cape Fear movies and novel confirm that Max Cady has a wife and child. The big difference is that they left Cady during his prison stay for the attack and sexual assault of a woman. In the series, Cady is "wrongfully" accused of killing his pregnant wife, with later evidence—although questionable—proving his mistress actually committed the murders. As such, a big part of Cady's sympathy comes from wishing he had a family because they were violently taken from him. He makes no mention of having other children, which is why Nevaeh's reveal as his daughter feels like such a surprise.
It's possible that Cady doesn't realize he has a daughter. After all, he has a reputation as a cheater. However, it's also likely that Cady and Nevaeh are working together to torment the Bowens. Both have motivation. Cady was allegedly wrongfully convicted of murder, and Nevaeh had her father ripped from her life. And right now, it seems like they're both invading the family from different angles. Cady is working the parents—more specifically Anna—while Nevaeh handles Zack and Natalie, her fellow teenagers. Episode 4 confirmed she has a wifi blocker that can disable security alarms, which all but proves her involvement in Cape Fear's early episodes.
Still, Nevaeh's role in the series raises a lot of questions. What is her relationship with her father? Why has she decided to torment the Bowens now? And, most importantly, does her motive just come down to daddy issues, or is there something more than meets the eye? After all, we now know her mother is the secuirty guard who had an affaid with Cady while he was in prison.
Is Nevaeh In The Cape Fear Movies?

Nevaeh is an original character created by Apple TV's Cape Fear. Again, while Cady had a child in both movies, their involvement is primarily used as motivation for his revenge against the Bowens. In the films, Cady is something of a one-man army. He doesn't involve others in his revenge scheme beyond manipulation for a greater means. So, the introduction of Nevaeh complicates things. The Max Cady of other adaptations doesn't seem like the type to team up with anyone, perhaps even his own daughter.
However, it's a pretty juicy reveal that explains why Cape Fear took its time doling out information on Nevaeh. When we first meet her, she's nothing more than an anonymous person, named Angel, behind a phone screen. Like Anna, most of us probably assumed it was Cady catfishing Zack. While that doesn't seem to be the case, it can't be ruled out completely. While Cady wasn't directly pretending to be a teenage girl, he could still be working through his daughter to disarm the family. After all, it wouldn't be Cape Fear if Max Cady didn't break bad.
