Tommy Maximoff's Powers In 'VisionQuest', Explained
VisionQuest (2026) brings back Tommy Maximoff, and it's been long overdue since we last saw him in WandaVision (2021). But even though Tommy is back, he's always been the least known of the twins due to his look and abilities never having the same pull as his brother Billy's.
Nevertheless, Tommy Maximoff is here, and it's a chance to finally revisit his unique powerset that has only been seen a handful of times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But how do Tommy's speedster abilities differ from those we've seen before, and is there a chance he could be as powerful as his brother?
What Are Tommy Maximoff's Powers in 'VisionQuest'?
Tommy Maximoff, in the comics, is a speedster with the ability to run nearly 1,000 miles per hour. He's also adept at vibrating his molecules so he can phase through objects as well as firing vibrational energy bursts. He earns his codename of Speed easily but also learned how to expand his powers in a way even Quicksilver couldn't.
In the MCU, he is the third speedster we've seen following Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Makkari in Eternals (2021). While Makkari is easily the fastest of the three, Tommy shows great promise in WandaVision as he was already moving in the blink of an eye at a young age. It started with his parents but excited his uncle, who was a fake Pietro all along.
VisionQuest shows that Tommy still has his superspeed, but it also teases his vibrational powers. Being that it's a series about robots, his abilities may be misplaced, but there's a lot of promise for how he could help Vision grow and possibly fun uses of his powers against technology. We've never seen a speedster in the MCU phase through objects either, and this could be a perfect chance to see that ability disrupt the likes of Ultron or Jocasta as Vision tries to solve the series' overarching mystery.
Who Are Tommy's Powers Based on?

The Maximoff twins' powers are tied to Wanda's bloodline, with Billy's powers mimicking his mother's and Tommy's mimicking his uncle, Pietro. In the MCU, Pietro and Wanda agreed to Hydra experiementaiton to defend their home and get revenge on Tony Stark for the deaths of their parents. Pietro gained super speed and was present for the Battle of Sokovia against Ultron.
After Pietro died, we never saw a human speedster in the movies and shows again until Tommy appeared, and even then, he was relegated only to the Hex. Still, his presence remained the only memory of Pietro and the person he was. Brash and hot-headed, Tommy always moved first and thought later in the comics, and the MCU's version showed signs of that, too.
In many ways, Tommy remained a perfect mirror to Pietro both in personality and power, but VisionQuest has also shown his much kinder and more scared side. He's just a kid, unsure of what's next and unsure if he can trust his mind, so he seeks help from his father, a synthezoid also in a new body with memories that aren't his own. Tommy may be a perfect homage to Pietro, but he's also his father's son.
Could Tommy Maximoff Ever Be as Strong as Billy?

Since both twins are the sons of the Scarlet Witch, there's always a question of whether their kids could match each other's strength. Tommy has already shown potential by creating the Witch's Road and controlling others' minds with ease. Finding his brother alone was an incredible feat of strength.
That said, Tommy may never be as strong as Billy, considering his powers don't have the same reach and aren't based in magic. Still, Tommy has the potential to surpass his uncle's speed, considering what he's already accomplished at half his age before he died. Tommy doesn't need to be stronger or even better than his brother because they both work best together by being different.
That doesn't mean Tommy will necessarily have a lower ceiling than Billy, since the MCU is famous for changing its characters' abilities. Therefore, Tommy, being tied to a magical mother, could still expand his speed and possibly even open portals similar to the Flash. There's no telling what the future holds for the character, but in a world of mutants, Tommy is something unique, and with that in mind, the sky is the limit.
