What Is Madripoor In The MCU? The Island Nation, Explained
VisionQuest (2026) is here and streaming on Disney+. Continuing where WandaVision (2021) left off, Vision is free of S.W.O.R.D.'s shackles and flying off to an unknown future. But laying low has also given him a conflict of being sure of who or what he is as an individual.
The final part of an epic trilogy for Marvel Television, VisionQuest has already surprised fans with its premiere episodes by calling back to many past Marvel Cinematic Universe projects and locations. The most recent has been Madripoor, a place we haven't seen for a few years.
What is Madripoor in the MCU?

Locations are a major part of any universe, but when it comes to the MCU, locations are also marked by major events. For example, Wakanda is not only the home of the Black Panther but also where The Avengers fought Thanos' army in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). There's also Kamar-Taj, where Doctor Strange learned the ways of the mystic arts, once again proving the importance of location.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) was the first time that we ever saw a longtime Marvel location, Madripoor. Located in Southeast Asia, Madripoor exists in two parts, Lowtown and Hightown. Hightown is where the high rollers and wealthy will gamble at casinos, and Lowtown is where crime is not only rampant but part of the ecosystem of the city.
When introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky, Sam, and Zemo had to infiltrate the underbelly of Lowtown, where they reunited with Sharon Carter to get information. We learned just how dangerous Madripoor could be and how. If you go, you're either there for business or pleasure. Either way, danger is always around every corner.
Unfortunately, we wouldn't return to Madripoor until VisionQuest, even though Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) remained a perfect opportunity to revisit the location.
How Does Madripoor Fit Into 'VisionQuest'?
When watching the trailers for VisionQuest, there was no hint that we would ever return to Madripoor, as the pristine-looking series seemed to take place mostly in Vision's mindspace. However, that couldn't be further from the truth, as Vision has to face the darker corners of the MCU with hitmen like Paladin, who has ties to the city in the series.
With a hit placed on Vision, he has to avoid those trying to kill him while also learning that his son from his past life, Tommy Maximoff, not only has a new body but is also as lost and confused as he is and needs help. The downside is he's a drifter captured by Paladin. Now, Vision has to forget about his own safety to save his son from an enemy he barely knows.
As of now, we aren't sure how Madripoor plays a role in the story, but being a lawless location in the MCU, it perfectly parallels Vision's own existence, as he lives through code and a set of rules that brought him into existence. Going to a place and looking for a son that, by rights, shouldn't exist, makes next to no sense in the grand scheme for a robot and goes against everything he stands for. Yet, there he is, beating the odds and proving his humanity by being in Madripoor.
Madripoor Could Continue to Return in Future MCU Projects

In the comics, Madripoor was a major location that heavily featured the X-Man Wolverine, as it was where he spent a lot of time. Even in the new game, Marvel's Wolverine, it's a location that Logan spends time in and fights within the streets of Lowtown and Hightown. As a result, there's no doubt we could see Madripoor again.
With a new X-Men movie on the way, it opens the floodgates of Mutants in the MCU. While we don't have a Wolverine confirmed to appear, we have Madripoor and adamantium, which are two key elements tied to Logan's lore. Even Daredevil (2015-2018) introduced the doctor who would create the adamantium bonding process. The pieces are in place to bring in Wolverine, but with Madripoor returning, this could also be the location where we first meet him.
As mentioned, locations are key to the expansion of the MCU, and while not all locations get the attention they deserve, it doesn't make the entire idea hopeless. That's what has helped Mandripoor return, and the more time we spend in it and explore it, the more we will want to see more of the location and how it will impact the MCU.
