There's a lot to look forward to when it comes to Prime Video's line-up of romance adaptations and originals, with one of the most anticipated movies of the year being The Love Hypothesis (2026). Based on Ali Hazelwood's bestselling and brilliantly addictive romance novel, the STEM-based rom-com could rightfully alter people's brain chemistry in the best way.

The book's astute pacing, fully fleshed-out characters, and remarkably written fake-dating plot make it one of the biggest treasures in contemporary romance. The book is a must-read at this point if you love the genre, and there's a good chance the movie could become just as big a staple, too.

With that in mind, a lot is riding on the adaptation, and based on everything we know so far, it's sure to be just as amazing as the book. I've never been more seated, and if the movie were set to premiere at the theaters, the employees would be scared and begging me to leave.

Meet 'The Love Hypothesis' Cast

Lili Reinhart in The Love Hypothesis as Olive Smith

Die-hard fans of the book remember exactly where they were when Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman were cast as Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen. They've also likely seen every TikTok and promotional still multiple times because they embody the online meme of "shook the book so hard, they literally fell out." And for those who know the deeper lore that the book's inspired by Reylo fan fiction from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, casting Daisy Ridley's real-life husband is the kind of brilliant choice that's going to be impossible to top.

The Love Hypothesis also stars Rachel Marsh as Anh, Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm, Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy, Jeananne Goossen as Dr. Aslan, Arty Froushan as Tom, and more. Hazelwood's little universe of books is interconnected with various characters making cameos, and while it's unlikely, maybe we'll even get mentions or appearances of other book leads that can hopefully hint at future adaptations. Regardless, we've got no notes on the casting and can't wait to see them in action.

What Is 'The Love Hypothesis' About?

Olive and Adam in The Love Hypothesis

The Love Hypothesis follows third-year Ph.D candidate Olive and the grumpy professor, Adam. It all starts because Olive's best friend, Anh, has a crush on her ex, and in an attempt to convince her that she's indeed moved on, the ruse essentially begins. With effective scientific puns and a distinguishingly clever approach to what a hypothesis actually is, the layers in the book are endless.

The film adaptation will be directed by Claire Scanlon, who's also responsible for the iconic Set It Up (2018), and if her work in the past is any indication, we're in for a treat. The banter between Olive and Adam is legitimately addictive, and it's part of what makes their relationship so remarkable. Outside of the fake dating trope, we get the delicious case of "he falls first," "hurt/comfort" (yes, please!), and "grumpy/sunshine."

'The Love Hypothesis' Trailer Breakdown And Release Date

Olive and Adam kiss in The love Hypothesis

The Love Hypothesis gives us a uniquely delightful trailer that almost feels old-school. The narration we get at the beginning, which makes it seem like some sort of science documentary ad, is actually brilliant, and it propels us toward snippets of what might be some of the most iconic scenes from the book, like their first fake kiss. Immediately, our faith in the casting is proven to be accurate because hearing both Reinhart and Bateman talk is stunning, and the screenplay already seems to be sharp and brimming with their signature banter. We're in for an absolute ride, and the short minute is enough to showcase this.

We've only got a .55 second teaser at this point, but still, it's loaded with so much goodness, including the R rating at the end. While fans of the book know that this one is gloriously spicy, there might have been concerns about how the adaptation would tackle certain beats, considering some movie versions of spicy books tend to be tamer. But we might just get lucky with this one.

More than anything, it's evident from the few seconds that both Reinhart and Bateman understand their respective character's mannerisms to the T. And even if there are big changes from the book, we can be confident in the fact that they're going to embody Olive and Adam gorgeously. This movie's gonna be big. I can feel it.

The Love Hypothesis releases exclusively on Prime Video on September 23, which also seems fitting considering the academic fall season. Here's to hoping the film version honors Olive's for pumpkin spice lattes because it'll make watching it during the appropriate season an even more glorious experience.

Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate, and Dr. Adam Carlsen, a hotshot professor and well-known tyrant, enter into a fake relationship, seeing each of their carefully calculated theories on love get thrown into chaos.
