Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) Season 2 is underway and is already expanding the Monsterverse’s slate of kaiju. The main antagonist this season appears to be a mysterious new aquatic kaiju, known only as Titan X. Given that the titan appears to have unsettled Kong himself, it could mean a shakeup of the power hierarchy in the Monsterverse.

Use our guide to find the 10 strongest kaiju in the Monsterverse movies and TV shows, ranked to the strongest based on skills, power, and success in battle.

10. Titan X

Titan X debuts in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as a massive aquatic titan that escapes the Axis Mundi. It gives off kraken vibes with its massive tentacles and scaly body. The titan’s backside is covered in spines, capable of devastating every ship in its path when it swims beneath the surface. With a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth and a speed fast enough to outrun Kong, Titan X can clearly do some damage.

The most unique aspect of Titan X, though, is its close relationship to the Sea Scarabs. The Sea Scarabs are smaller Titans that look like giant beetles. They follow the Titan X closely, and it seems to protect them in turn. Having a whole army of scarabs at its disposal is another major advantage of Titan X. Still, since we don’t know the full scale of its abilities or how it will fare against other titans, Titan X takes last place on this list.

9. Tiamat

Tiamat is a giant serpent-like titan who appears briefly in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), heeding Ghidorah’s call. However, she doesn’t get in on any action until Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). In the film, Godzilla makes a surprisingly aggressive move, deliberately going to Tiamat’s Arctic Ocean lair and attacking her. The territorial Tiamat puts up an impressive fight against the King of the Monsters.

With her serpentine body, she’s able to wrap herself around predators like a snake and is even able to constrict Godzilla temporarily. She almost overwhelms him with her frills and bites, though she’s no match for his atomic breath. Her quick demise at Godzilla’s hands prevents her from ranking higher on this list, though her serpentine body and ability to emit electrical currents make her a force to contend with.

8. Rodan

Rodan is a giant, fiery pterosaur-like titan who appears in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He boasts one of the most epic titan designs in the Monsterverse as a flying beast with a massive wingspan and skin that resembles molten rock. The titan also has an internal volcanic system that allows him to emit extremely high, even fatal, body temperature. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, he proves adept in combat and very nearly kills Mothra during their battle.

Rodan’s unique heat abilities would also give him an edge should he ever face Godzilla, as he is even able to withstand thermonuclear Godzilla. He’s definitely a capable titan, though the fact that Ghidorah made quick work of him and his more neutral nature make him a little less of a threat.

7. Skar King

Skar King is the main villain of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which digs a bit deeper into the history of Kong’s species. He’s a gigantic primate-like titan who strongly resembles Kong, though he’s thinner and has more of an orangutan appearance. His similarities to Kong go further than looks, as he also boasts most of Kong’s advantages and abilities, such as speed, strength, and durability.

While Skar King is quite strong, he ultimately isn’t much of a match for Godzilla and Kong. However, he ranks a bit higher than Tiamat and Rodan because what he lacks in sheer strength, he makes up for in intelligence. Skar King is a rare titan that seems genuinely sadistic and evil, subjugating his fellow titans and pursuing a hostile takeover of Earth. The fact that he’s driven by more than survival instincts or a territorial nature gives him an edge in strength.

6. Shimo

Shimo is the secondary antagonist in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In the film, Skar King holds Shimo captive and uses his crystal to control her. It’s a testament to her power that he needed her to help maintain control rather than use his own strength. Shimo is the opposite of Rodan in that she generates extremely cold temperatures.

Her frostbite blast easily propels her above all but the strongest titans in the Monsterverse, as she’s capable of inflicting frostbite on Kong and even freezing Godzilla completely solid. In terms of brute strength and useful abilities, Shimo is seriously powerful. The only reason she doesn’t rank higher on this list is that she’s uninterested in combat and is far less experienced in battle than other titans in the Monsterverse.

5. Mothra

Mothra made her Monsterverse debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and returned in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. She has an insectoid appearance, resembling a giant moth with a hairy body, antennae, and four enormous wings. Despite her insectoid appearance, she looks more angelic and divine than frightening. In terms of brute strength, Mothra isn’t overly strong, having been nearly bested by the likes of Rodan.

Her strength and power come mainly from her unique abilities, including reincarnation. Mothra is a rare titan who can never really die, as she can lay eggs through which she will be reborn if mortally injured. Additionally, when killed, she can transfer her power as she did to Godzilla in Godzilla: King of the Monsters to help him defeat Ghidorah. As a sort of guardian angel who can’t be killed and can transfer her power to fulfill her duty, Mothra is stronger than most ordinary titans.

4. Kong

Kong is one of the strongest titans in the Monsterverse, almost rivaling Godzilla in sheer brute strength. While Godzilla is the King of Monsters, Kong is the King of Apes, standing as the strongest of his kind. His power is evident upon his debut in Kong: Skull Island (2017) as he easily bests Skullcrawlers and giant squid while swatting away helicopters as if they were bugs. By Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), he’s able to almost hold his own against Godzilla.

Kong is also one of the smartest kaiju in the Monsterverse. He’s able to connect with humans, even learning sign language to communicate with Jia (Kaylee Hottle). Kong also has the most emotional intelligence so far, demonstrating needs that go beyond mere survival instinct. All of these factors make him a force to be reckoned with. Still, the fact that Godzilla very nearly killed him means he’s not quite as strong as the top three most powerful kaiju.

3. Ghidorah

Ghidorah makes his Monsterverse debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The three-headed monster is enormous, standing even larger than Godzilla, with massive, powerful wings that give it the advantage of flight over Godzilla. In addition to flight, Ghidorah can conduct electricity, call to other titans, and regenerate, including fully regenerating his decapitated heads. What makes him even more dangerous is his sense of sadism, as he often targets humans and seeks to bestow the most suffering on his targets.

The titan’s superb strength is on full display in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when he puts up an incredible fight against Godzilla. At times, Ghidorah almost appears even more powerful than Godzilla. However, since Godzilla ultimately proves more powerful, when bolstered by Mothra’s energy, Ghidorah just narrowly misses being the strongest titan.

2. Mechagodzilla

The only titan more powerful than Ghidorah and more evenly matched with Godzilla is a variation of Godzilla himself: Mechagodzilla. It’s a giant, robotic kaiju, designed to kill Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. Despite bearing a strong resemblance to Godzilla, Mechagodzilla boasts a closer connection to Ghidorah, as the machine utilized Ghidorah’s telepathic skull in its control system and is unwittingly influenced by the titan’s lingering consciousness.

Mechagodzilla can emit a red energy beam that, at times, can even overpower Godzilla’s atomic breath. Its metallic design also gives it enhanced speed, reflexes, and durability, allowing it to both withstand blows from Godzilla and Kong and overpower them. While Mechagodzilla seemingly overpowers Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s important to remember Godzilla wasn’t at full strength. Between Godzilla’s weakened state and Mechagodzilla’s susceptibility to short-circuiting, its strength level doesn’t quite surpass Godzilla’s.

Godzilla

2014

Godzilla has established himself as the strongest existing titan in the Monsterverse. He is one of the biggest titans in the Monsterverse, passing right through the Golden Gate Bridge as if it were nothing and knocking over skyscrapers with his tail alone in Godzilla (2014). Godzilla also boasts a huge advantage over most titans in that he’s amphibious, capable of remaining in water and on land indefinitely, and taking out both aquatic and land titans with ease.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, he establishes his dominance over Ghidorah, serving as the only titan capable of holding his own against the three-headed titan. He has proved his brute strength is superior to Kong and almost evenly matched with Mechagodzilla. Additionally, his ability to absorb energy from other titans allows him to reach a state of power no other titan can obtain, allowing him to remain the definitive King of Monsters.
