2 Sitcoms That Didn’t Age Well (& 5 That Did)
There's a misconception among both critics and casual viewers that comedies are easier to produce while dramas are more prestigious and challenging, yet that couldn't be farther from the truth. Both genres require thoughtful writing that in some areas can be complex and effortless in others, both of which contribute to the overall TV viewing experience for audiences.
For sitcoms, however, there's a lot riding on whether or not the writing holds up in a time and space where we have the resources to learn more about other people and the words we choose to use. It also begs the question of whether a successful sitcom needs a spin-off or not and if we should just leave good things as they are without ruining them with something else. For some, The Big Bang Theory (2007) no longer holds up, while others still love it and are waiting for its new spin-off, Stuart Saves the Universe (2026). A series like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005) is designed for a very specific audience, but at the same time, we can make the same argument about F.R.I.E.N.D.S (1994).
And really, there are a lot of sitcoms to keep up with, some of which many people still haven't heard of. Here are two big ones that sadly don't hold up and five that still do, as well as where you can stream them on platforms such as Prime Video, Netflix, and more.
Didn't Age Well
If I had to pick between Game of Thrones (2011) and How I Met Your Mother (2005) as the one series that ruined the entirety of its reputation with its series finale, it'll always be How I Met Your Mother. Because personally, I can rewatch Game of Thrones if I wanted to, but I fear I could never go back to the world of Ted Mosby and his friends, even if How I Met Your Father (2022) was actually a fantastic spin-off until its cancellation.
Because of its unsettling finale, which wildly retcons a majority of the seasons and splits up couples people got attached to, How I Met Your Mother is not only a series that doesn't hold up, but it's heartbreaking how we got to this point in the first place. Still, maybe some people might love it to this day, but the choices left a lot to be desired where continuity is concerned.
Didn't Age Well
The Office is tricky because there's still plenty that we can appreciate about it, despite the fact that some of the jokes didn't age well. At the same time, because the last few seasons took a bit of a tumble with Steve Carell's exit, it doesn't feel as though the show held up because of that detail alone. Its cast was a huge part of its charm, so losing him felt like losing the heart of the show.
Still, for what it's worth, it's the kind of sitcom that I firmly believe people should watch at least once in their lives, even if they never revisit it afterward. The way the series takes on an ordinary workplace like a paper company is unique to this day, and the performances continue to hold up, even if the writing could use significant improvement.
Aged Well
As someone who watches Parks and Recreation religiously, I can confirm that it not only holds up, but it gets better and better with every viewing. Mike Schur did something so remarkably special in ensuring that the series remains inclusive, sharp, hilarious, and simultaneously warm. It has its faults, sure, but really, the Amy Poehler-led series is a gift that keeps on giving.
While it took inspiration for a mockumentary from The Office, the series brilliantly took up a life of its own in the second season, and grew stronger with every episode. From the romances to the friendships, there's really nothing about Parks and Recreation that doesn't work seamlessly. If you want something that'll consistently feel like being wrapped in your favorite blanket with a kind of approach to government that's genuinely inspiring, this is the one comedy not to be missed.
Aged Well
With nuanced themes and relatable humor, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is almost better now than it was before. The older you are when you watch it, the easier it is to grasp some of the more complex themes and understand the humor better. Will Smith's performance is still inimitable to this day, and every other key player consistently ensures that what we get when they're on screen is layered, warm, and grounded.
Even its spin-off, Bel-Air (2022), was mostly entertaining in how it did its own thing while still maintaining the magic of the original to keep the story engaging. As a '90s show, it's one of the few that doesn't get worse with time, and as we have proof of with shows that aired even later, it's not an easy guarantee with how writing evolves and changes. Still, the visit to Bel-Air is always a worthy one if you want something that's brimming with heart and humor.
Aged Well
Brooklyn Nine-Nine, like Parks and Recreation, is a rare treat because of Mike Schur and everything the cast and crew consistently delivered for eight seasons. In a sea of way too many cop shows, the sitcom stood out for how it handled incredibly serious topics through humor that never once teetered on the edge of being offensive.
Its inclusivity was never a means to check Hollywood boxes, but a desire to tell grounded and real stories in a space that was always lacking thoughtful representation. The characters were constantly growing and evolving, allowing every beat of their journey to resonate with the audience, all while we laughed at their ridiculous hijinks at the same time. Rich with memorable friendships and romantic relationships, it's perfect for anyone who loves whodunnits and a workplace sitcom.
Aged Well
As the oldest show on this list, few things top The Golden Girls. Sure, it's imperfect, and we can find small faults in it upon rewatches, but outside of those small details, everything about the show still reigns as a gorgeous love letter to female friendships and the comfort of women taking care of each other.
In more ways than one, it set the kind of standard that we could still use more of today when it comes to placing nuanced and fleshed-out women at the center of a story. Hilariously charming, warm, and always clever even if they weren't kind, The Golden Girls always understood how to be soft and sharp simultaneously. With brilliant performances from all four of the legendary actresses, there's something for everyone in the women-led comedy. If you want something that'll feel as quietly satisfying as a midnight snack, look no further than the inimitable cozy comfort that is The Golden Girls.

The crass and at times, outlandish humor in Arrested Development might not be for every type of viewer, but the show still holds up in achieving something special with its unique premise and wild characters. There's only so much incredible actors can do to make a series great if the writing doesn't give them excellent material to work with, and the writing in Arrested Development is a large part of its appeal.
Stories surrounding complex families tend to perform better in the drama category, but interestingly, it's the humor in Arrested Development that allows the Bluth family to remain memorable today. Full of meme-worthy moments, absurd antics, and legitimately hilarious jokes, Arrested Development could continue to hold up for years and is perfect for fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
