VisionQuest (2026) may not seem like a monumental entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not only is it completing its own trilogy, it's also setting up a new era for the character, which is coming right before Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Of course, considering the history of hits many characters have, audiences are wondering if the Scarlet Witch will return in some capacity.

As the Vision recollects his past life, it's hard not to consider that he's seen Wanda or shares even the faintest memory of her. However, a recent Empire Magazine interview with showrunner Terry Matalas confirms that Vision knows what happened to Wanda and that Scarlet Witch isn't in the series because of it.

How Did Scarlet Witch’s Death Change the ‘WandaVision’ Trilogy?

Wanda as Scarlet Witch in Wandavision

In WandaVision (2021), we see her deal with the mental breakdown of losing the Vision in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and how hard it is for her to cope with it. Instead of becoming a villain, she freed the small town she had kept under her control and let go of the children and version of Vision she had created.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), we learn that after keeping the Darkhold, it corrupted her and made her travel the Multiverse to find the children she lost. After taking many lives, she understood the error of her ways and in destroying the source of the Darkhold, seemingly killed herself as well.

Since then, Agatha All Along (2024) and VisionQuest deal with the aftermath as her two children, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, are revealed to be alive. There's a loose possibility that Wanda Maximoff may not be as dead as she seems. However, without hard confirmation, we have been in a world where her impact has changed the lives of those closest to her as they make sense of a reality she isn't in anymore.

Why Can’t Scarlet Witch Appear in ‘VisionQuest’?

As much as we want to see Scarlet Witch again, and there have been a couple of changes to tease a return, the prevailing question is: why can't Scarlet Witch be in VisionQuest? The short answer is that this story isn't about her, but the long answer is that the narrative doesn't seem to be opening that door for her.

The trailer shows key elements of the story, set in Vision's mind, where he interacts with past AIs such as J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron. He uses this time to remember past Avengers films from before he was reborn, as well as to find his place as a completely new entity. But more than that, he now has to find the reincarnation of his son, Tommy Maximoff.

In that time, there's little room for Scarlet Witch to appear, as this story is very much the Vision's. There are still some teases, however, such as a scene in which red energy fills the room, and Vision levitates. But this could be a sign of a virus as well, or even Ultron trying to take over. In the end, as much as we want to see Scarlet Witch, this may not be her time either.

The MCU Still Needs a Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It's been years since we saw Scarlet Witch, and in that time, the supernatural part of the MCU has expanded with monsters like Werewolf by Night, more witches, and even Mephisto. By rights, this is exactly the type of environment Scarlet Witch should be a part of, and yet we have nothing.

The MCU needs a Scarlet Witch as a benchmark for how powerful magic can be in the MCU, and now is the perfect time to explore that. As characters like Billy Maximoff and Agatha Harkness get more power, there's also the debut of Ghost Rider coming, and yet the strongest magic user is nowhere to be seen.

It feels unfair for the characters not to enjoy a world that is perfect for her, and it's a relief that there are still other equally likable characters in the meantime. But VisionQuest feels like the last chance to get a hard tease of Scarlet Witch's return, and it makes the show all the more interesting as we hope there's a possibility of something more.

With a bounty on his head, Vision must confront his nature and resist Ultron's influence to survive.
