‘Resident Evil’s New Virus, Explained
The monstrous virus introduced in Resident Evil is a concoction of the Umbrella Corporation, seemingly designed to enhance anything exposed to it to its evolutionary peak. Unfortunately, as Umbrella Corporation scientist Paul explains, a human error resulted in the virus being unleashed into the public, where it quickly infected several people.
It seems that the peak form of existence created by the virus is a massive and adaptable entity that can absorb flesh and consume people to expand its size and reach. It’s reduced to a largely non-verbal form, with humans infected by the virus either becoming wandering remnants or mutating into a monstrous new form. It’s a tweak on the origins of the outbreak from the games but leaves room open for the film to create its own unique creatures for Bryan to try and survive.
What Happens To Bryan In ‘Resident Evil’?
Despite his best efforts, Bryan fails to escape Raccoon City. After a chance encounter with an infected little girl goes sideways, Bryan is bitten on the arm and steadily begins to mutate over the course of the film. Despite all his moments of craziness and lucky breaks, he's not able to get to a cure in time.
In fact, his continued presence in the lab while the Umbrella scientists struggle to finalize the cure could doom everyone, as he mutated too quickly and consumed most of the staff. The film ends with Bryan seemingly overwhelmed by the corrupting influence of the virus and morphing into a monster just as the National Guard arrives, dropping the cure in the process.
‘Resident Evil’s Bleak Ending Doesn’t Tease A Sequel
Considering that it’s an adaptation of a high-profile IP from another medium, it wouldn’t be surprising if Resident Evil had included a bunch of lore references or teases for prospective sequels. However, none of that happens in the film, with the movie largely relegating the references to gameplay-mechanic Easter eggs. None of those teases would have paid off after Resident Evil, though, given what happens to Bryan.
Everyone he encounters on his mission is either killed, consumed, or infected. There’s no one left at the end of the film outside of Bryan’s girlfriend, whose fate is left unknown by the end of the movie. Bryan could theoretically return as a threat in a sequel, but he’d have little of his personality left following the events of this movie. In the end, Bryan is one of the many victims of Umbrella’s machinations.
The True Meaning Of ‘Resident Evil’
A surprisingly thematically rich aspect of Resident Evil is the way it uses the existential terror of parenthood as a theme. The movie opens with Bryan on the phone with his girlfriend, discussing her unexpected pregnancy. This reveal terrifies Bryan, who initially seems to be in favor of her terminating the pregnancy. This is reinforced throughout the film with his interactions with infected children, both of which see Bryan try (and fail) to preserve other lives. His attempt to help the infected little girl even leads to him being promptly infected and sets up his eventual fate.
Throughout the film, Bryan finds himself struggling to escape the chaos that life has thrown at him, best represented by an infected girl and a mutated baby—both of which Bryan ends up killing and further endangering himself. It’s a vicious little theme of the movie, especially as it sets up the genuinely heart-wrenching moment where he tries to call his girlfriend and tearfully admits she would be a great mother. It gives the otherwise bombastic horror movie a somber side that hits like an unexpected wrecking ball.
