9 Netflix True Crime Docs With Twists You Didn’t See Coming

Lover, Stalker, Killer is a true crime documentary about the woes of finding love. At the center is mechanic Dave. He tries online dating for the first time and meets a woman who takes romantic obsession to a deadly extreme. As you're watching this documentary, you get this gnawing feeling that things aren't what they seem from the start. And as tensions rise and you think things can't get any crazier, the twist comes into play. 

This true crime documentary is about how people have hidden and often nefarious depths, especially when it comes to romance. Also, it’s about how sometimes there aren't limits to how far people will go to have that picture-perfect romance. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, it's very much giving Joe from You (2018).

A Child of My Own (Un hijo propio) is the most unique true crime documentary because of how much time is invested in the reenactments thanks to director Maite Alberdi. So much so that it feels more like a regular drama than a documentary. At the heart of this story is Alejandra, a woman desperate to become a mother. She takes that desperation to extraordinary lengths as she fakes a pregnancy and steals another woman's baby. And we get to see not only her perspective, but that of the woman whose baby she stole. 

This might be the one documentary where you'll feel conflicted by the end. Because in Latin America there are heavy societal pressures to have children and build a family if you’re a woman. That makes you feel for Alejandra. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, I would check out What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012), as that also explores the challenges of parenthood.

The Truth and Tragedy of Moira Wilson is the kind of true crime documentary that will leave you shocked by the twist but also infuriated. Because at the center of this is cyclist Moira Wilson. You can tell from her friends and her family that she was a singular force of nature who was extremely talented but also loved. And the more that you learn about her and her murder, the more you want to know who could snuff out such a bright light. When the twist comes, it's because of a tale as old as time: jealousy. 

I know I said that you'll walk away from this true crime documentary feeling a little infuriated. But you also see that the memory of Moira is still very much alive with those who loved her. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, I would check out Vanilla Sky (2001). The main character isn't as beloved, but there are themes of jealousy and the outlandish lengths people will go, that make it similar to The Truth and Tragedy of Moira Wilson.

Like A Child of My Own, The Perfect Neighbor is also a unique true crime documentary. But instead of reenactments, this documentary has tons of police footage and scenes with the family that will make you cry. 

At the center of the story are two neighbors in Florida, Ajike Owens and Susan Lorincz. And after multiple disagreements, things turn deadly with Lorincz killing Owens. The police body camera footage and the interviews show the immediate aftermath but also probe Florida's controversial stand your ground laws. 

I've never cried during a true crime documentary, but this is the one that broke me. And if you need something completely different to pull you out of the state that you’ll be in after watching this, I would recommend something light like The Burbs (1989).

Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is the viral true crime documentary in this list of true crime documentaries with twists you didn't see coming. Because everyone on the internet was absolutely bamboozled when the culprit harassing a teenage girl for months was revealed. And it's thanks to police intervention of these abusive texts that we finally got the truth. 

If I were to compare this documentary with any other one on this list it would probably be to Lover, Stalker, Killer. Because both docs lean heavily into themes of family, trust, and how even those close to you can hurt you. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, I would recommend the classic bullying movie Carrie (1976). Just trust me on this one. Go in without knowing anything else about this doc. The twist is worth it.

The Crash asks one question: was it an accident? At the center of the story is Mackenzie Shirilla. She's a 17-year-old girl who crashed her car into a brick wall in Ohio, killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan. And the more that you learn about Shirilla, the more you realize that this was intentional. 

Like The Truth and Tragedy of Moira Wilson, this true crime documentary will also make you question what kind of person would snuff out such bright lights like Dominic and Davion. Thankfully, this documentary lets Shirilla speak for herself, making it clear that jealousy and hubris were front and center. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, it would probably be A Girl Like Her (2015), where the pseudo-documentary explores the cruelties of high school girls who fashion themselves as the queen bee. 

A Toxic Love Story has it all. It's got threatening emails, jealousy, and lies upon lies. And at the center of this doc, is a similar story to Lover, Stalker, Killer. We’ve got a couple who are receiving a string of threatening emails that escalate into a revenge plot involving the husband's ex-girlfriend. And by the end of it, you're going to feel like you can't trust anybody thanks to the twist.

This documentary emphasizes that everyone has their own version of an event and that attention is a powerful motivator. And if I were to compare it to a TV show or movie, it would be Apple Cider Vinegar (2025). This docudrama also explores those who will do anything and everything to be front and center, even if it means lying.

The Murder of Rachel Nickel is probably the documentary on this list with the most twists. 

While on a walk with her 3-year-old son Alex in Wimbledon Common, Rachel is murdered with her son being the only witness. And this documentary follows how the father André balances trying to find out the truth of Rachel’s murder from his son, but also protecting him from the intense pressures of the investigation itself. Basically, the twists take a backseat but you don’t mind while watching because your focus is on the family aspect.

What makes this documentary feel like it was handled with so much care is the fact that André is the one recounting everything. And there comes a point where the documentary also includes a grown up Alex. Which, will get you choked up. And if I were to recommend something to watch after this true crime documentary, it's the actual three-part series that Netflix released about the murder of Rachel and the aftermath, titled The Witness (2026).

Maternal Instinct takes the societal pressures of a woman having a baby like in A Child of My Own and combines it with the jealousy and lies told in Lover, Stalker, Killer. Taylor Parker is pulled over by a Texas state trooper after driving erratically. When she claims she had just given birth, people start realizing that her story doesn't add up. 

This documentary is a little different because the twist is shown to you earlier on. So it kind of works backwards and paints a picture as to who this woman is, why she lied, and the lives she destroyed along the way. And like The Crash, you'll probably walk away with conflicting emotions, but zero sympathy for the criminal in this documentary. 

If I were to compare this documentary to a TV show or movie, it would probably be Stolen from the Womb (2014). This one has a little bit more stalking and explores the lengths someone is willing to go to have a baby, but it’s still a worthwhile follow-up.
