Netflix’s Schumacher '94 – The Birth of a Legend (2026) offers a treat for racing fans, featuring a deep dive into Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher. However, this documentary feature is quite different from the streamer’s earlier sports documentary on the racer, Schumacher (2021). Schumacher attempts to capture the full scope of its subject’s career, while also touching on his personal life and struggles.

Schumacher '94, though, dedicates its full runtime to a single season of Schumacher’s career: 1994. Indeed, 1994 was a big year for Schumacher, marking his narrow victory at the Australian Grand Prix and his first back-to-back World Championship wins. Still, the 1994 season was much more than a win on Schumacher’s record. Schumacher ‘94 – The Birth of a Legend explores how it became one of the racer’s most tragic years and nearly ended his career prematurely. Use our guide to find out the story behind Netflix’s Schumacher ‘94.

‘Schumacher ‘94’ Explores A Turbulent Season

Michael Schumacher in Schumacher Birth of a Legend

Schumacher ‘94 – The Birth of a Legend delves into the tragedy and controversy of Schumacher’s 1994 racing career. The season stirred controversy due to persistent cheating allegations targeting Schumacher’s team, Benetton Formula. Although never proven, the FIA investigated claims that Benetton Formula used prohibited traction control software and electronic aids.

The FIA placed Schumacher under direct scrutiny after the 1994 Belgian Grand Prix, when the governing body determined the skid block on his Benetton-Ford had worn too thin. The skid block rule had been in place for only two races before the Belgian Grand Prix, but the finding still led to Schumacher’s disqualification. Just a month earlier, Schumacher was also disqualified from the British Grand Prix and slapped with a two-race ban for ignoring a black flag summoning him to the pits.

However, the incident that truly shook Schumacher had nothing to do with his precarious spot in the FIA’s eyes. On May 1, 1994, Schumacher witnessed the tragic death of Brazilian Formula One racer Ayrton Senna at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. He was directly behind Senna when a steering column failure sent the Brazilian racer off track, where he crashed into a concrete barrier. Senna was pronounced dead after the crash. Even more tragically, Senna’s was the second death associated with the San Marino Grand Prix. Just a day earlier, at the second qualifying session, Austrian racer Roland Ratzenberger lost his life after a damaged front wing on his car led him to crash off-track.

Schumacher ultimately won the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. He crossed the finish line a day after Ratzenberger’s death and just two hours before the public confirmation of Senna’s death. At the time, Schumacher told a press conference he felt no happiness or satisfaction with the victory in the face of such tragedy. However, Schumacher '94 delves into the true toll the tragedy took on him.

Did Michael Schumacher Almost Quit Racing?

Michael Schumacher and Corinna Schumacher in Schumacher Birth of a legend

Schumacher didn’t let many people see just how shaken he was by the tragedy at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. In Schumacher '94 – Birth of a Legend, his wife, Corinna Schumacher, reveals that he even tried to hide his true feelings from her. Inside, though, he struggled and even doubted whether he wanted to keep racing. In the documentary, Formula 1 hospitality worker, Di Spires, and Schumacher’s former manager, Willi Weber, recall the heartbreaking aftermath of the San Marino Grand Prix.

They recall an inconsolable, distraught Schumacher, who questioned whether he even wanted to race another Grand Prix. Although he didn’t tell Corinna he was considering quitting, he shared those thoughts with Weber. Archival footage shows Schumacher himself admitting that Senna’s death had opened his eyes to the dangers of racing. He was haunted by the thought that a racer could be there one moment and gone the next, often looking at a track and mapping all the points that could be lethal.

Schumacher ‘94 – The Birth of a Legend doesn’t just focus on the victories that made Schumacher the person he is, but also on the tragedies and controversies. In public, Schumacher often came across as calm, cool, and collected. He’s still hailed as a larger-than-life “legend” in the racing world. However, Schumacher '94 – The Birth of a Legend goes beyond the racer, revealing Schumacher's human, vulnerable side. While it may not be the most expansive picture of his career, it arguably gives fans a more detailed look at who Schumacher really is and the year that came to define his career.
