If there’s one thing Love Island USA (2019) does well, it’s marketing. The hit reality TV series is rife with meme-able moments and viral potential due to its high-stakes premise, intense drama, and sex appeal. From melodramatic conversations to tear-streaked faces to shocking catfights, Love Island capitalized on its meme-able moments, attracting dozens of brands with a meme-jacking marketing strategy.

Given how successful Love Island has been in marketing, to the point of becoming a cultural phenomenon, it’s hard to understand the franchise’s sudden pivot to AI-generated marketing. Yet, Love Island Australia (2018) has hopped on the AI train. It’s not just that the show used AI when there’s no shortage of social media and TV personalities and influencers to provide content; its tactics also raise questions about consent as it blends real-life actors with AI.

‘Love Island Australia’s AI Promotion, Explained

Sophie Monk in Love Island Australia

In anticipation of its upcoming season, Love Island Australia released a promo video on Instagram about Australia taking over Love Island USA’s Fiji villa. Love Island USA host Ariana Madix appears in the promo, handing the villa keys to Love Island Australia’s host, Sophie Monk. Madix jokingly warns Australia not to break anything, while Monk decides that the villa needs a bit of “Ausification” for the new season. However, the promo then turns into AI as AI-generated models appear and begin redecorating the villa with Australian themes.

The promo blends AI and real people. The parts featuring Monk and Madix are real, and they both filmed these clips for the promotion. It’s easy to tell where the AI-generated content comes into play, as the AI models have that uncanny valley effect and awkward motion. Most Instagram comments criticized the AI, questioning the need for it and the quality of the AI-generated content. While many accept AI as a potential industry tool, using it to wholly replace human labor is controversial. Love Island Australia took things further by not informing Madix of the AI components.

What Did Ariana Madix Say About ‘Love Island Australia’s Promo?

Ariana Madix in Love Island

Ariana Madix called out Love Island Australia, saying she wasn't aware her clip would be used in AI-generated content. Although her comment on the video appears to be hidden, actress Sarah Pribis shared a screenshot of it on Instagram. Madix commented, “They didn’t tell me AT ALL that the clip I shot would be used with AI. Something I am firmly against. wtf guys @loveislandau??” Her comment highlights the growing issue of artist consent regarding AI.

Industry regulations prevent studios from outright recreating the likeness of a living actor with AI without explicit consent, but the Love Island controversy shows how other areas can get murky, such as using a clip an actor consented to film and pairing it with AI content. Unfortunately, artists often struggle to control how the content they consented to film is used. Often, especially in the reality industry, contestants sign contracts that lets producers edit clips and shape a narrative as they see fit. Practices like “frankenbiting,” where clips are spliced together to attribute a statement to someone they didn’t make, raise particular ethical concerns. It raises a question of when producer editing rights go too far.

If Madix’s contract didn’t explicitly forbid Love Island Australia from using her clip alongside AI content, she may have little legal ground to challenge the franchise. Still, even if not illegal, the practice is still unethical. Many actors and creators harbor strong feelings about AI, and the idea that they can be presented as if they consented to appearing in AI-generated content is troubling. Madix’s situation shows the importance of artists demanding contract clauses that prohibit using their work alongside AI, especially since studios may not be upfront about those intentions.
