Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is first introduced in Legally Blonde (2001). She starts her pink-hued and scented journey as the President of the Delta Nu sorority at California University of Los Angeles. Her life is seemingly perfect, too, as she’s certain that her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Matt Davis), is going to propose. Instead, he dumps her and announces that he’s engaged to Vivian Vanderbilt (Selma Blair). Warner—the worst guy on the planet—tears Elle apart for not being good enough. As Elle tends to do in both Legally Blonde and its sequel, she subverts the “dumb blonde” stereotype by proving what she’s capable of doing.

Now, her story will go back in time with Prime Video’s prequel series, Elle (2026), where Lexi Minetree takes on the titular role. Vernon Sanders, Head of Television, Amazon MGM Studios, released a statement and referenced the timeline when announcing Elle in May 2024. “One of the most quotable, iconic, and beloved characters that is ingrained in the fabric of Hollywood history has to be Elle Woods, and we are honored to bring her origin story to our global Prime Video customers,” Sanders said. But when does Elle take place in relation to the movies? Will the new show step on the toes of the original projects or overlap with them at some point?

When Do the ‘Legally Blonde’ Movies Take Place?

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) with Bruiser, her dog, on her first day at Harvard Law School in Legally Blonde (2001).

So, in 2001, Elle decides she can win Warner back by proving him wrong. She locks in and gets into Harvard Law School, only to realize that Warner won’t change. So, Elle falls back in love with herself while she falls in love with being a lawyer. Elle and Vivian also realize that the other isn’t the enemy. Instead, Legally Blonde makes it clear that Warner is the issue, and Professor Callahan (Victor Garber), who has a history of misconduct and tries to seduce Elle, is the villain.

Meanwhile, Elle meets and falls for Emmett Richmond (Luke Wilson), Callahan’s teaching assistant. The end of the movie, which features Elle as the Valedictorian at her graduation, teases their engagement. Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003) picks up with Elle and Emmett planning their wedding. This is where the timeline gets a bit wonky. The first movie suggests that Elle graduates around 2004, but the sequel has Elle working as a lawyer in 2003.

Most of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde fittingly focuses on Elle trying to find the mother of her beloved dog Bruiser, so that she can be at Elle and Emmett’s wedding with Bruiser. It’s wild, I know, but I love it for that very reason. Elle discovers that Bruiser’s mom, Gidget, is owned by C'est Magnifique, a company that tests on animals. So, Elle takes Bruiser’s Bill all the way to Congress and opposes her boss, Congresswoman Victoria Rudd (Sally Field). Elle does so with the eventual help of Grace Rossiter (Regina King), the Congresswoman’s Chief of Staff. There’s also a bizarre yet weirdly perfect subplot of Bruiser falling in love with a Rottweiler named Leslie. As it turns out, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde is a real Bruiser-forward movie.

When Is ‘Elle Set?

Elle Woods smiles at her mother, while her father looks at Elle's birthday cake in Prime Video's Elle.

As of now, the Elle trailer reveals that the show takes place in 1995–six years before the events of the first movie. Since Elle goes from a college senior to a first-year law student in Legally Blonde, it seems like the prequel series will find Elle Woods in the middle of high school. That’s a smart choice on the show’s behalf. There’s so much time—some of which takes place in college—between Elle and Legally Blonde. That could give the show a few seasons of stories.

One of which seems to be building out Elle’s relationships with her parents, especially her mom. The characters originally portrayed by Tane McClure and James Read, don’t have that large of roles. They don’t even have first names! I mostly just remember them trying to dissuade Elle from trying to get into Harvard Law. Now, they have names! June Diane Raphael will play Elle’s mom and role model, Eva, “who is polished, pragmatic and thrives on keeping things picture-perfect,” per Deadline. Tom Everett Scott will portray Elle’s father, Wyatt.

Everett Scott seems to be drawn to playing fathers in YA series on Prime Video. He comes to Elle after playing Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah’s (Gavin Casalegno) dad, Adam Fisher, in The Summer I Turned Pretty (2021). I don’t have the fondest memories of Elle’s father from the movies, but I’m still excited to see what Elle and Everett Scott do with the character. Mostly, I’m anticipating this new chapter of Elle’s life. I have a feeling I’ll love it—it’s Elle Woods after all!
