What’s With John Stewart’s Bird In ‘Lanterns’ Episode 2? 5 Huge Answers, Explained
In Lanterns (2026) Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) tries to get his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) out of the way by sending him to his home in Coast City to retrieve his lantern battery. As much as he wants to sideline Stewart and keep him in the dark about the Manhunters and what’s happening in Rushville, Nebraska, the episode teased that he may not be able to contain the rookie Green Lantern for long. During a flight training session, borrowing Jordan’s ring, Stewart fails to fly, instead conjuring a bird when Jordan tells him to “think flight.”
Creating constructs is exactly what the Green Lantern ring does, so the bird only seems like a mildly impressive construct. However, things get strange when Stewart keeps the little green bird alive and safe throughout his entire trip to Coast City and back, sans the ring. Keeping constructs alive without the rings is extremely rare for a Green Lantern, as multiple characters mention upon seeing Stewart’s bird. While “Trust Fall” doesn’t explain the bird situation, here are a few potential answers for Stewart’s trick.
The Prodigy
The simplest answer for John Stewart’s bird in Lanterns Episode 2 is that he’s something of a prodigy. Towards the end of the episode, Stewart tells Jordan that the ability to keep a construct alive without the ring is so advanced it’s practically impossible. We have to at least ask: what if he’s just that good? After all, the Guardians broke standard protocol to hand-select him as a Green Lantern.
While most Lanterns are chosen by the rings, the Guardians chose Stewart, as revealed in a promo clip for Episode 3. His parents explain that the Guardians sent them a message that their son was destined to become a Green Lantern. There’s no greater explanation for the departure from protocol than that Stewart is special. Indeed, in the comics, he’s a master architect. Perhaps Lanterns has taken his skills a step further, establishing him as a true prodigy among Green Lanterns.
Ion
Another possibility for Stewart’s bird is that he wields a power far greater than his own. In DC Comics, Ion is the sentient embodiment of willpower, residing in the Oa Central Power Battery and powering the entire Green Lantern Corps. For a long time, Ion remained a secret component of the Power Battery until Hal Jordan destroyed it, freeing Ion. The freed Ion demonstrated the ability to bond to hosts, eventually inhabiting the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner.
When bonded with Ion, Rayner had near-godlike abilities. With near-limitless energy, he could create constructs without the ring or lantern battery, power the Central Power Battery himself, and project himself anywhere at any time. While Ion once bonded with the Green Lantern Sodam Yat, he never bonded with Stewart in the comics. Still, Lanterns may retcon Ion’s history to introduce him to Stewart. Ion doesn’t influence a host’s actions, which explains why Stewart seems like himself yet still possesses extraordinary energy.
Parallax
Parallax is the opposite of Ion in DC Comics. Instead of the embodiment of willpower, it is the embodiment of fear. The Guardians imprisoned the demonic entity in the Central Power Battery with Ion, which stifled Parallax’s power with its opposite energy. As with Ion, though, Parallax also managed to escape the Central Power Battery and bond to hosts. Meanwhile, when it bonds with a host, it thoroughly possesses them and has complete control over their actions.
In the comics, Parallax has bonded with characters like Jordan, Ganthet, Kyle Raynor, and Sinestro, granting them godlike abilities, including the power to create yellow energy constructs and to instill extreme fear and exert manipulation. Since Parallax bonded to Jordan in the comics, rumors have long posited that the entity would appear in Lanterns. However, given Stewart’s unique abilities, the show may surprise us by making Stewart the host of Parallax rather than Jordan.
The Godstorm
While Parallax and Ion aren’t directly tied to John Stewart in the comics, the Godstorm is. In the comics, Stewart tries to save the Green Lantern Corps after the Guardian Koyos betrays them and destroys the Central Power Battery. His search for a power great enough to save the Corps brings him to the Source. The Source is the creator of the universe and the most powerful entity in DC Comics. It empathizes with John’s mission and grants him a power called the Godstorm.
The cosmic energy of the Godstorm allows him to create constructs without a ring, as well as granting him near-godlike powers. It transforms him into the Emerald Knight, who is arguably the most powerful Green Lantern in the universe. The Godstorm would certainly grant him the powers seen in Lanterns, though it remains a mystery how he came to embody the cosmic power as a trainee.
The Subconscious
Another simpler explanation for Stewart’s bird is the power of the subconscious. In Lanterns Episode 2, Jordan remarks that the bird must mean something important to Stewart for him to keep it alive so long without the ring. Stewart brushes off the question and crushes the construct, as if to prove it's just a bird to him. However, his mannerisms make it quite evident that the bird is significant to him.
The fact that the bird persists even when Stewart is unconscious hints that he’s not even actively keeping the construct alive. It’s tied to his subconscious. Perhaps it has little to do with raw power and more to do with the power of the subconscious. For reasons yet unknown, the bird may be tremendously significant to Stewart, and it isn’t a display of power but rather of his inability to escape the feelings he tries to bury in his subconscious.
