The Tiny Death That Changes Everything You Thought About 'Hope'
Hope (2026) is a wild sci-fi action film, with a grisly mix of gallows humor, showy special effects, and surprising moral complexity. The movie opens with a mysterious creature attacking the small Korean town of Hope Harbor, leading to countless deaths in the streets and much of the community being left in ruins. However, this straight monster movie approach takes a hard turn into sci-fi in the second half when it’s revealed the creature was actually part of an alien royal court that had crashed on Earth.
It turns out most of the conflict in Hope was set off by the death of one of these entities, which put the humans and aliens on a collision course that doesn’t end well for anyone. In fact, this one death, which occurred off-screen and before the events of the film, is the most important in the entire movie. It’s a key means of explaining the central conflict, while also serving as a tease for what could come in a prospective sequel.
Who Is Kali in 'Hope' – And How Did He Die?
Kali is the crown prince of the intergalactic empire that’s secretly at the core of Hope, with his off-screen death prompting much of the chaos that follows. Kali is one of the mysterious alien race that crash-landed on Earth some time before the events of the film. His mother, the Empress, seems to be doing her best, along with the others, to adjust to this strange world, only for Kali to wander off into the woods.
A chance encounter with the would-be hunter Yang-bae results in the alien, dubbed a monster by the ignorant man, being shot in the head from afar. Without the defensive attributes that are implied to develop with time, there’s nothing to be done to save the alien prince. This seemingly kills the creature, prompting the other aliens to spread out more in search of him. This, in turn, exposes the aliens to the local humans of Hope Harbor, which results in dozens of deaths for the citizens and pits the survivors against the aliens.
What Kali's Fate Says About 'Hope's Themes
Hope is very much a movie about miscommunication and the fallout of it, with Kali’s fate being a key example of that. Kali is never seen on-screen alive, but it’s clear his mysterious fate has left the aliens shaken on a fundamental level. It explains why the extraterrestrials are so vicious in their treatment of humanity, a valid, ferocious response to other species attacking them. With their prince gone, it’s clear they fear what has happened to him.
Meanwhile, Yang-bae’s careless actions and failures to recognize the potential consequences of them result in dozens of deaths around the town, all stirred up by the kitchen aide for the royal family setting off on a desperate search that just gets themselves and others killed. The harshest irony of Hope is that Yang-bae repeatedly demands a reward for the alien body. If he hadn’t killed the boy and had found a way to return him to his family, there’s a chance he could have been rewarded by the royals beyond his wildest dreams. Instead, the aliens are put on the offensive because of his careless actions, resulting in a great deal of chaos.
Kali's Potential Resurrection Could Set Up 'Hope 2'
This all builds to one of the more surprising aspects of Hope's ending. In the final scenes, which shift focus from the humans to the aliens, it's revealed that Ma'veyyo, the bodyguard for the alien empire, is willing to sacrifice his heart to restore the prince to life. Although they don't seem to know where he is, there at least seems to be some sort of confidence that they can bring the prince back.
Given that his father, the emperor, is seemingly destroyed when his massive spaceship crashes into the Earth, this could be a crucial turn of events for the future of the alien race and the larger cosmos. It could also easily become the narrative for a sequel to Hope, which could build on the audience's new awareness of the aliens' plight as a bit of dramatic irony. We could easily find ourselves rooting for the resurrection of Kali, something that the humans may be fighting against in their ignorance. While he never gets a line in the film, Kali remains one of the most important characters in the narrative.
