'Haunted Hotel' Season 2 Ending, Explained (& S3 Possibilities)
Haunted Hotel Season 2 brings us back to the Undervale Hotel just in time for Halloween! With it, of course, we get a lot of spooks, hijinks, and Abaddon being Abaddon. But Season 2 is also an emotional season where Katherine, Nathan, Esther, Ben, and Abaddon face breakthroughs, heartache, and setbacks. If you don't have time to watch, here's how Netflix's Haunted Hotel Season 2 ends.
I'll break down how those emotional bits make this show more than just a fun and spooky comedy. While I'm at it, I'm going to talk about whether Haunted Hotel Season 3 has been greenlit and what I'd like to see in the future because there are so many avenues to explore with the Freeling family.
How Does 'Haunted Hotel' Season 2 End?

Haunted Hotel Season 2 ends with Katherine accepting the Undervale Hotel as her home, which is a big deal because she always thought of it as a temporary thing. But her heart says otherwise.
This change in how Katherine views the hotel is told through flashbacks as the hotel residents deal with a situation in the present. Katherine, Nathan, Esther, Ben, and Abaddon find themselves stuck in an altered version of the hotel filled with a black forest and mysterious monsters. As they're trying to figure that out, the show gives flashbacks of the first time Katherine, Esther, and Ben visited Nathan's hotel. Also, we see how Esther and Ben first discovered Abaddon.
Turns out that the black forest appeared within the hotel because the rules of preservation and sustainment weren't adhered to. In a flashback, Katherine finds a paper that says, "Beware the east wind that bloweth from the west. Ring not the third bell, lest ye anger the sea. Honor the sentinel, that Pete be appeased." In the present, Katherine finds the paper again and finishes reciting the warning. It says, "If thou callest this place home, feed life to the red lantern to resist the black forest."
The family eventually finds the red lantern in the first room that Katherine and Nathan renovated at the hotel. And thanks to flashbacks, we know that Abaddon led Esther and Ben to the book that has taught Esther all her spells. One spell, in particular, is helpful with the black forest after Abaddon breaks the red lantern accidentally. As the monsters are breaking through, Katherine's blood acts as the key to claiming the hotel as home and dispersing the black forest. From there, Katherine acknowledges this truth with Nathan by her side as Esther, Ben, and Abaddon chase after his evil arm—the end.
But what's important to note about how Haunted Hotel Season 2 ends is the flashback scenes between Katherine and Nathan. Because we also get to see what led Katherine to visit the hotel with her children. It all had to do with her slimy husband Ron, who eventually convinces her to leave the hotel and give them a second chance instead of following Nathan's advice to flourish like her brother knew she could. What follows is the aftermath of Nathan being left alone as he renovated the hotel, each day weighing on him, until he killed himself and his family returned to the hotel.
Has Netflix Renewed 'Haunted Hotel' for Season 3?

At the time of writing, there's no confirmation that Netflix has renewed Haunted Hotel for Season 3. However, I think its chances are really high. Let me explain.
When we look back at Season 1, which premiered September 19, 2025, it had a 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience score in less than a week after its release. Haunted Hotel was subsequently renewed for Season 2 on September 26, 2025, a week after it premiered. And just before the Season 2 premiere, the rating on Rotten Tomatoes from audience members was 90%, with critics at 79%.
The Storylines We Need If 'Haunted Hotel' Gets a Season 3

The first obvious storyline Haunted Hotel Season 3 could cover is Abaddon. He's gone from wanting to go back home to choosing the Freeling family despite his powers being within his reach, and then accepting them as family in Season 2. But we still haven't addressed how he came to possess this boy and why. Knowing the surprising emotional weight behind a lot of the things that happen on this show, what if the reason for the possession isn't as evil as Abaddon wants us to believe? And what if the drawings on the fridge of Abaddon and a demon are actually the child and Abaddon? What if they were friends?
As for the rest of the humans, we learned a lot more about Katherine, her relationship with her brother, and her relationship with her ex-husband in Haunted Hotel Season 2. But that ex-husband is still out there, and she's just recently accepted the hotel as being her home. The perfect test for her would be to bring back her smooth-talking ex-husband to shake the foundation of this new home. I would also personally like to see more of Katherine and Abaddon. They've bonded in a mother/son way, despite her saying she's not his mother.
When it comes to Esther and Ben, they're a little harder to pin down for a potential Season 3. But they both will probably have a hard time accepting their dad isn't as amazing as they thought him to be. If anything, the ghost with the most potential in Season 3 of Haunted Hotel is Nathan. He's just starting to open up and accept that he doesn't have to be happy-go-lucky all the time. He's also really just accepting his depression and that there might be something after that.
I'm not saying I want Nathan to come full circle and pass on to the afterlife in Haunted Hotel either. He's not ready for that, his family isn't ready for that, and I'm not ready for that. But what if he's ready to let the mask slip and maybe discover who he really is? Now that I would want to see.
