The Connection Between ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ And ‘Fall 1’, Explained
Fall (2022) introduced audiences to a new kind of survival thriller by placing its characters on top of a 2,000-foot tower in the middle of the desert with no means of escape. Fall 2: Deadpoint (2026) takes things even further by having a new pair of survivors stuck on a plank walk on the side of a mountain in Thailand.
The film is, surprisingly, a direct sequel to the first film narratively, with connections to the original that probably didn't need to happen but help build a trilogy. But what connection does Fall 2: Deadpoint have to Fall, and does it actually enhance the narrative?
How Did ‘Fall’ End and Who Survived the Ordeal?
In the original Fall, climbers Becky and Shiloh ascend a massive TV tower as Hunter tries to help Becky—who lost her husband in a climb—as she tries to find herself and regain the will to live. Due to the TV tower being decommissioned, it's rusted, and after a hasty ascent, they find themselves stranded.
With no way to reach out to the outside world, they begin to struggle as Becky deals with the effects of dehydration and malnutrition. In a moment of lucidity, Becky realizes that, while trying to get a backpack, Shiloh died and that she had been hallucinating her friend for most of the film's second half.
From there, it's up to Becky to find her own strength and create a plan for escape that involves sending a text to her father and attaching it to Shiloh's body and pushing her off the tower so it could send. After the plan worked, Becky reunited with her father, concluding the traumatic event.
How Does ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ Connect to the Original?
Fall 2: Deadpoint is about Shiloh's sister, Jax, and their friend Luce. When Luce convinces Jax to honor her sister, they agree to travel to Mount Kwan in Thailand and cross a massive plank walk 4,000 feet in the air. While their guide warned them of the dangers of such a trek, they still agreed and listened to his instructions.
It isn't long before a rockslide ruins their plans and their guide is seemingly killed in the event. Now, trapped even higher up than in the first film, these two friends have to work together to survive. Unlike the first film, which gave Becky very little to work with, Fall 2: Deadpoint focuses heavily on the many environmental challenges the characters have to face.
From heavy rain and wind to rockslides, they have to first make it across the plank walk and then cross a rusty bridge on the brink of collapse. Granted, it's a little far–fetched that a location that was likely visited fairly frequently is suddenly falling apart, but it allows for some incredible tension. In fact, Fall 2: Deadpoint's added obstacles allow for a story that will keep the audience more engaged, as danger could come in any form and from any direction.
Does ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint‘s Connection Actually Matter to the Larger Story?
Connecting both Fall films isn't something that anyone who enjoyed the original would've needed. Bringing in the sister of Shiloh to do her own climb feels like a low-odds situation, and yet it works for the sake of the story. With a third film on the way, it wouldn't be a wild assumption to think it would bring the characters from the first two films together to climb and survive something even more outlandish.
That said, the Fall series never needed connections to begin with. Audiences tune in to see what structure the characters will be climbing and how they will live through their struggles in the process. It doesn't have to have people tied to past characters to make it work. But in a world of franchises, these connections are make-or-break situations.
Fall 2: Deadpoint is an unexpected sequel to a film that was surprisingly exciting and creative, and to know a second was coming was surprise enough. Even so, these connective elements create a lived-in universe for the audience and allow us to connect immediately without having to set up too much backstory. If we are here to see them climb and survive, and that's it, then the less time spent setting people up, the better.
