Coyote vs. ACME (2026) is a love letter to Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. Two of the more iconic members of the Looney Tunes (1929) roster of characters, Coyote has been chasing after Road Runner for over 70 years, never getting closer to catching him. This frustration is at the center of the animated/live-action hybrid, which sees Coyote take the Acme company to court over its many flawed products that contributed to his failures.

The film finds a lot of fun ways to subvert or tweak the older Looney Tunes characters in unexpected (and often hilarious) ways, all playing into the thriller tropes that the movie unironically embraces. Along the way, the dynamic between Coyote and Road Runner is completely upended, with the latter revealing that he doesn’t fear or hate the former. In fact, it turns out Road Runner has spent the last 70-plus years considering Coyote a friend, which completely changes their dynamic.

How 'Coyote Vs. Acme' Changes The Coyote/Road Runner Dynamic

Road Runner at a trap in Coyote vs. ACME

One of the most surprising beats in Coyote vs. Acme comes at the climax of the film. When Coyote is called in front of Congress to discuss his lawsuit against Acme, his star witness is Road Runner. Initially, Coyote hopes to use this chance to finally catch the bird. However, Coyote is flummoxed when Road Runner (through a translator) defends him from Acme’s slander and outright calls Coyote his friend. He even asks when Coyote will return to the desert, implicitly so they can resume their chase.

It’s a surprising turn that plays with the history of the characters, turning the long-time mortal enemies into surprising friends. Coyote is notably almost brought to tears by this discovery and doesn’t spring his trap, letting Road Runner make his escape. When the film ends, Coyote resumes their game, and the reality of their chase hasn’t done anything to slow the Coyote down. It’s a cute beat that highlights the idea that endurance in the face of adversity is something worth respecting, especially when someone actually recognizes that value for what it is.

Road Runner's New Motivation Changes The Character In A Key Way

Road Runner

Road Runner is one of the Looney Tunes characters with the least defined personality. This is very much by design, as the character only really speaks with a series of quick “meeps” and has never really hinted at a greater interiority. While Road Runner has been characterized as a bit of a trickster and with more wits than one would expect, that’s not an uncommon character type for Looney Tunes protagonists. However, the reveal that Road Runner considers Coyote a friend is actually a sweet recontexualization of their dynamic.

Suddenly, all of Road Runner’s reality-bending antics come across less as desperate survival instincts and more as playful teasing. It explains why Road Runner always seems to “fall” for Coyote’s traps, only to escape; he’s been playing along all this time, treating their chase like a game that he’s never lost. It gives Road Runner a cheeky self-awareness that the character didn’t really have before.

It’s also a surprisingly kind touch for the bird, making his willingness to engage with the Coyote an active choice. It makes the character less of a potential victim in his narrative and more of an active participant in their escapades. It affords the Road Runner a level of agency that the character never really had before.

What Happens To Road Runner And Coyote Now?

Coyote tries to grab Road Runner

Honestly, the future of the Looney Tunes as a whole is somewhat in flux. While Looney Tunes Cartoon (2020) did a good job of revisiting the old chaotic energy of the franchise and The Day the Earth Blew Up (2024) was a terrific reprisal of the Daffy and Porky dynamic, the struggles the franchise has faced in recent years make it unclear when audiences will see these characters again. However, once we do, it’ll be interesting to see how future Coyote and Road Runner cartoons deal with the dynamic shift that comes with Coyote vs. Acme. While the ending implies they’ll keep their chase going, it may be less openly aggressive and more creatively charming.

This could also be an opening for Coyote to hunt other characters like Bugs Bunny once again, giving his friend a bit of a break. If anything, this new status quo could open the door for more goofy team-ups, especially if they run afoul of other people in their world (like the reimagining of Foghorn Leghorn) who want to use the suffering of toons to their advantage.
