If there’s one thing that is absolutely clear if you’re a fan of anime, it’s that taste is subjective. Allegedly, people love isekai given the sheer glut of new releases that come out each season, and then there are anime fans that will watch Shonen titles for some sweet sakuga and nothing else. People like what they like, and as long as enough people watch it, then more titles like it will be made. It’s simply business. It’s why anime like Hell Mode: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates In A World With Garbage Balancing (2026) and Black Torch (2026) got anime adaptations despite nobody asking for them.

And then there’s Chainsmoker Cat (2026). It’s the kind of anime that fans of Pop Team Epic (2018) would find funny, but even then, that’s not a guarantee. It’s extreme in virtually every way, and is absolutely disgusting to watch. There are shows that border on good taste, but Netflix’s latest seasonal grab is something else entirely. People online have called it vile and gross, and it’s been censored in numerous countries. And despite all of that, people are tuning in. It’s currently at #77 on the streaming charts, but why is that? Is there something actually worthwhile about the show, or are people watching it out of morbid curiosity?

What Is ‘Chainsmoker Cat’ About?

As a slice-of-life, Chainsmoker Cat is pretty low-stakes. The first episode has plenty of vignettes following its cat-girl lead, Yaniko, but the one thing the title doesn’t really tell you about her is that she’s the definition of a girl mess.

You think you’ve seen walking disasters like Tomoko from Watamote (2013), but Yaniko is an apocalyptic mess. She’s chronically addicted to cigarettes to the point where she can’t hold down even a part-time job because she needs nicotine in her system that frequently. When asked to choose between food and cigarettes, she chooses the death sticks every time. She can’t take care of herself in any meaningful way and isn’t above digging through the trash to get the butt end of a cigarette.

So, naturally, this premise is ripe for zany hijinks, provided you squint your eyes and your definition of ‘hijinks’ is incredibly loose. This is a series that prioritizes gross-out humor and laughing at all of the misfortune that befalls Taniko. Does she deserve it? Most of the time, yes. When her sister enters her apartment in a hazmat suit, you almost expect the gross-out sound from SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) to blare out as it pans over her room. She never acknowledges that she’s the problem, so the jokes at her expense are karmic… to a point.

Just How Disgusting Is ‘Chainsmoker Cat’ Really?

It doesn’t take long to see exactly how depraved Chainsmoker Cat is. In two minutes, we watch Yaniko’s landlord masturbate to the thought of her, all as we watch Yaniko have explosive diarrhea in all its glory. And that’s just the first impression!

Chainsmoker Cat tries to marathon scene after scene of rude and crude humor. It’s not hard to look at Chainsmoker Cat and think that the series is doing everything in its power to prove that she’s the worst person catgirl out there, rivaling Divine from Pink Flamingos (1972) for sheer filthiness. The close-up of Yaniko’s teeth alone is enough to make you gag, but with how you can somehow smell how awful her room is despite there being no smell-o-vision in sight, it’s frankly a miracle some people were able to see the credits roll.

It’s not surprising that people are put off by just how foul Chainsmoker Cat is. If you’re watching it on Netflix, they’re streaming the “Evil Dragon” version, which has very little censorship and stays true to the director’s original vision. An “On-Air” version exists that streams a far more censored and tamer version of the anime to meet television standards, and at that point, is it even worth watching the show? Chainsmoker Cat lives and dies on its vulgarity, and if you think it’s hard to watch now, just wait until the supporting characters with alcohol and drug addiction show up!

Is ‘Chainsmoker Cat’ Any Good?

Obviously, a lot of this boundary-pushing humor exists for the sake of shock, but is there actual merit to Chainsmoker Cat, or is it just edgy humor for the sake of memes?

Once you peel back the show’s disgusting sense of humor, there actually is some meaning to the trash. It’s a show that makes you feel bad because it has a lot to say about how crippling addiction and depression are. Yaniko doesn’t live a good or happy life and is constantly scraping the bottom of the barrel just to eke out a meager existence. If you’ve ever seen Trainspotting (1996), then you should know exactly the bleakness that a life of drug addiction can bring, and Chainsmoker Cat doesn’t shy away from presenting how awful it is. Making Yaniko’s drug addiction a source of comedy is certainly a choice, but people can and will laugh at dark situations as a way to process them.

There’s also an artistry to Chainsmoker Cat that can’t be ignored. Probably the most obvious expression of Bibury Animation Studio’s dedication to the bit is just how well animated Yaniko’s gross-out moments are. More animation frames were devoted to watching Yaniko plaster herself with nicotine patches than in most episodes of the third season of One Punch Man (2015). That, and director Taku Kimura clearly has an eye and taste for quality films, as references are made throughout the show’s intro to movies like Fight Club (1999), Leon: The Professional (1994), and even Spider-Man 3 (2007). Chainsmoker Cat may come across like a joke, and it will probably be remembered at the end of the day as one, but there’s actual merit to its direction. It is definitely not for everyone, and I wouldn’t blame you if you dropped it after a few minutes, but there is value to an obscene comedy about the most repugnant catgirl in existence.

Catgirl Yani struggles to pay her rent and keep a job while feeding her smoking habit. As her loved ones' concerns grow, she must rethink her future.
