Buddy (2026) is a great grim comedy, bolstered by some surprising turns from iconic actors. The vicious parody of Barney & Friends (1992) imagines a cuddly kids’ show mascot who goes on a rampage, slaughtering the other characters and kids on the show as they try to escape his wrath. Most of the film’s human focus is on the kids trying to escape him, as well as Cristin Milioti’s Grace, who finds herself also trapped in the show.

The voice cast brings in more established names like Keegan-Michael Key as Buddy and Patton Oswalt as Strappy. There’s also Michael Shannon, whose place in Buddy might come as a surprise to some audiences. However, despite his fame for more intense turns, Shannon actually has a lot more experience in comedy than many audiences might expect.

Michael Shannon Plays A Doomed Kids' Show Character In 'Buddy'

Willie in Buddy (2026)

Michael Shannon doesn’t appear on-screen in Buddy but instead does the voice for the little puppet cowboy Willie. Frankie and the other kids encounter Willie during their escape attempt from Buddy into the forest. Although Willie and his companion, George, initially seem friendly and offer the kids a source of food, it’s really so that the children will fall asleep so they can steal Strappy and make off with him.

However, Buddy soon finds them in the woods. Despite offering to help Buddy find the missing kids, Buddy has no patience or pity for Willie and George and murders them instead. It’s a brutal end for both characters, and one that helps underscore the surreal nature of Buddy. It’s also one of the many great voice-over performances in the movie, thanks to Michael Shannon.

Willie Is A Perfect Michael Shannon Character

Michael Shannon in Funny or Die

Willie is a strange and grim figure in the film, which makes Michael Shannon the ideal actor to play him. The actor may be best known for his dramatic and intense turns in shows like Boardwalk Empire (2010) or movies like Nocturnal Animals (2016), but that's exactly what makes him a great pick for Willie. Despite his initial friendliness toward the kids, there's something unnerving underneath Willie's delivery that makes him come across as intimidating as soon as he's introduced.

His musical chops also reflect Shannon's own experience as a musician. It's a part that only really works if the character feels unnerving naturally, something that Shannon is very adept at as a performer. While most audiences might not immediately associate Shannon with a grimly comedic character like Willie, there's a lot that the actor naturally brings to the role that makes it an ideal fit.

Michael Shannon Is Funnier Than Anyone Gives Him Credit For

Michael Shannon in The Night Before

The other aspect of Willie that makes perfect sense for Shannon is the actor’s experience as a comedic actor. He’s a terrific deadpan performer when he needs to be, using his intense and blunt delivery to make absurd dialogue even funnier. Just look at the Funny or Die “Sorority Letter” sketch, where the actor reads an infamous letter aloud. However, audiences shouldn’t be surprised at his comedic talents.

Some of Shannon’s earliest performances were in comedies like Groundhog Day (1993) and Kangaroo Jack (2003), while he’s also shown a capability for combining his comedic and intense sides in mysteries like Knives Out (2019) and Bullet Train (2022). His most straightforward comedic performance was in The Night Before (2015), where he plays a seemingly magical drug dealer.

So, the fact is that Shannon has always been deceptively funny, with his dead-serious delivery only making his silly turns more effective. It’s something that elevates his performance in Buddy and helps ensure that the character is more memorable than he might have been otherwise.
