DC movies have always been rocky, with movie quality ranging from Superman: The Movie (1978) to The Flash (2023). However, the TV shows have always had a degree of quality that is maintained with a level of consistency that makes them mostly good rather than unbearable, and they even gave us a shared universe.

With that in mind, there is a huge collection of live-action DC shows that people love and some may not even know about. But the varying tones and quality make them all a unique watch, which stand out from one another in distinct ways that have defined the universe for decades.

01

Smallville
Smallville

Smallville

2001

One of the best shows from the live-action DC library, Smallville, explores the high school years of Clark Kent as he grows in his powers and eventually ends the story with his evolution into Superman. From encountering future DC heroes to learning about his past, there's a lot that Smallville gives us that feels equal parts dated and timeless.

Smallville isn't perfect and doesn't have to be. It's a series that captures the joy and spirit of Superman but also gives us something fresh. The powers are fun to see, and Tom Welling still stands as one of the best Clark Kents to date.

02

Arrow
Arrow

Arrow

2012

Kicking off the CW universe of DC shows that includes The Flash (2014-2023), Arrow started as a grounded story about a vigilante who returns from being stranded on an island and uses a bow and arrow to get revenge on the people who killed his father. As the show progressed, we saw him embrace his superhero roots and work with other heroes as a tentpole character in this universe.

Arrow has its ups and downs, but as a catalyst for a whole universe, it was a trailblazer for superhero television. Years later, this is still a show worth watching and seeing how it grew and evolved into what we know today.

03

Doom Patrol
Doom Patrol

Doom Patrol

2019

Doom Patrol is one of the strangest teams ever put together in comic books, as people deformed by life-changing powers must work together to save reality from various strange dangers. But what makes the series so great is how it leans on the drama of its characters to build humor and great stories.

Of all the shows that came from the DC Universe app, Doom Patrol was easily the best because of how it embraced the strangest parts of the universe, like Flex Mentallo, and made it work. Doom Patrol is a show you have to trust as it gets weirder, but you won't regret it.

04

Swamp Thing
Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing

2019

Canceled after one season but still unforgettable, Swamp Thing explores the origin of Alec Holland as he goes from scientist to monster in a Louisiana swamp. The story explores a narrative introduced by Alex Ross, but also the mystery and mystique of the Green and how it connects to Swamp Thing.

It's a great series that ended too soon and an amazing horror mystery. But it never got enough attention when it was released. Nevertheless, Swamp Thing is a standout show that's as dark as Doom Patrol but not nearly as silly.

05

Watchmen
Watchmen

Watchmen

2019

Inspired by the beloved graphic novel of the same name, Watchmen takes the story a step further and creates a world where Ozymandias' plan led to a new era of superheroes and law enforcement. But the overarching mystery also opens the door for a return of the world's most powerful being: Dr. Manhattan.

Watchmen maintains the spirit of the graphic novel in terms of its deeper themes and darker ideas but also introduces new characters that are just as engaging as what we've seen before. But the best part is the added context of past characters like Hooded Justice, which makes the series unforgettable. Perfect for anyone who loves the tone in Lanterns (2026).

06

Superman & Lois
Superman & Lois

Superman & Lois

2021

Superman has always been a character that was present on the small screen, but nothing quite compared to what Superman & Lois gave us. A series revolving around Clark Kent as a husband and father, it's a grounded show that doesn't forget why people tune in.

Seeing Clark's kids deal with powers while also facing iconic villains makes this the perfect Superman series, and it also ends on a note that makes the series feel complete and fulfilling. Even if you aren't a Superman fan, Superman & Lois is a must-watch DC show. It's also great for the fans who loved how Superman (2025) incorporated romance.

07

The Penguin
The Penguin

The Penguin

2024

A spin-off of Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022), The Penguin is a miniseries that focuses solely on the rise of the titular villain following the events of the film. Colin Farrell absolutely shines as the Penguin and gives us one of the most definitive looks at the Batman villain yet.

The Penguin is a methodical show that's expertly written with amazing characters and a crime story that gets you hooked from the first episode. But the one thing no one can ever forget is the heartbreaking finale twist that had everyone talking. Fans of crime shows are bound to love every minute of it.

08

Lanterns
Lanterns

Lanterns

2026

The most recent TV show in James Gunn's new DC Universe, Lanterns, takes the intergalactic peacekeepers down to Earth for a grounded detective drama where an aged Hal Jordan has to train his replacement, John Stewart.

The series is far more intense than Smallville but reinvents what we know about the characters in a fun way that makes it feel special. Lanterns may not be for everyone, but when it comes to character work and lore, it's a series that stands out among the best of DC's live-action shows.
