'The Avengers: Doomsday' Trailer - Everything We Know (So Far)
It's been several years since the Marvel Cinematic Universe assembled Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the story has expanded outward, introducing new characters, new teams, and entirely new corners of the multiverse. But Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18, 2026, will pull all of that expansion back into a single point of collision.
Marvel previously released a series of shorter, character-focused teasers featuring Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, Shuri, M'Baku, Namor, and the Fantastic Four—all positioned toward the same inevitable conflict with Victor Von Doom. The full trailer reveal at CinemaCon gave us a little more insight into what that might look like. Based on the new clip, this is everything we know so far.
Professor X Is The First To Sense Doctor Doom's Presence
The trailer begins with the green-hooded, metal-masked Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) preparing to invade the multiverse. The shot then switches to Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) standing at the window of the X-Mansion, watching as a bright, unnatural light forms in the distance. From the expression in his eyes, it's obvious that he already knows something is wrong.
That stylistic choice reframes the scale of the threat since Xavier's abilities have always operated on a global, cerebral level. If he's reacting this way, it means Doctor Doom can be felt across space, or possibly across realities. That's a pretty big deal because it shifts Doom away from being just another antagonist. The implication is that his presence disrupts various worlds before he even acts on it.
Internal Avenger Conflict
Per the official synopsis, Avengers: Doomsday is set 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts* (2025). The story sees groups of heroes (the Avengers, Wakandans, and New Avengers from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, and the original X-Men from a separate universe) team up to save the various universes from the threat posed by Doctor Doom.
But the final team-up doesn't come easily, as evidenced by the clash between Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Gambit (Channing Tatum) in the trailer. If plot leaks shared on Reddit are to be believed, the initial hostility comes from fear of the unknown. The X-Men, who have survived several incursions (catastrophic events where entire worlds are destroyed), are just not in a very trusting mood at first.
The Different MCU Teams Unite (Eventually)
Along with Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, we also get to see Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) transforming into a second Yelena Belova and battling the real Yelena (Florence Pugh). The eventual collaborative effort is something the MCU has been building toward for years, but what's notable is that there's no clear hierarchy or leading group of heroes.
Instead, the trailer suggests that the alliances will be fluid, and proximity doesn't necessarily mean unity. In that context, Thor's speech makes perfect sense. "Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this. If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters," the Asgardian says in the clip (via The Hollywood Reporter). "Mark my words: We are going to need a miracle."
Doctor Doom And Thor Face-Off
Among the more overt displays of Doctor Doom's power is a moment in the trailer that reframes the entire balance between hero and villain. It happens when Thor confronts Doom directly, initiating what appears to be a standard clash between two high-powered figures. But the exchange doesn't go down the way one would expect. When Thor throws his weapon, Doctor Doom just catches it.
It's a simple action, but the meaning behind it is complex. Thor's weapons (be it Mjolnir or Stormbreaker) have always functioned as extensions of worthiness and power. By stopping one mid-flight, Doom interrupts that symbolism entirely. That means he's operating at a level where the rules that normally define these characters don't apply in the same way.
The OG Captain America Returns
Fortunately, the miracle Thor spoke of arrives in the form of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who grabs the God of Thunder's magical hammer Mjolnir and readies himself for a fight alongside his fellow Avengers. And all Thor is able to say at the moment is, "It's not possible." And we totally get why Thor would feel that way. Steve's arc was basically a closed book after he went back to the past in Endgame.
He returned the Infinity Stones, stepped out of the timeline he helped save, and handed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). The trailer offers no explanation of how he knew his old team of heroes (albeit a recalibrated version) needed help. But what we do know for sure is that Steve is still worthy, whether he has the shield or not.
