‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Finally Explains Its Title (And It's Not About Doctor Doom)
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is one of those films where it's painfully obvious who the villain is; in this case, it's Doctor Doom. However, the one thing that the recently released trailer does is use wordplay to tease the actual threat coming to the movie that isn't Doom.
When we see a word like ‘Doomsday’, we automatically think of Doctor Doom in the context of Marvel, but it's also about the end of the world. For this Avengers film, we have been shown why it has the Doomsday subtitle, and it makes the film even scarier and more complex than ever.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is an Apocalyptic Story
We know that Doctor Doom is the main physical threat in Avengers: Doomsday, but what the new trailer revealed was that he's clearly not the threat of the entire film. Instead, that title may go to the Incursion that all the heroes are trying to fight.
We see one in the trailer as the X-Men's world collides with another’s, possibly the Fantastic Four's, and the Avengers are fighting the mutants in the mansion. In a way, this sets up how Incursions are more like the Infinity Stones—they’re a force of nature that the heroes must stop, while at the same time, stop Thanos from getting the Stones.
In this case, rather than stop Doctor Doom, it's possible both are trying to stop Incursions, but for Doom, it's for his own personal reasons. It may seem like he is a helpful player, but with Doom, nothing is as it seems. But the one thing we know is that the film's title has nothing to do with Doom for now; rather, it's about the literal end of the world.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Has the Potential to Have Two Meanings
It's more obvious now that Doomsday is referencing the apocalypse while also adding credence to what Doom was talking about at the start of the trailer. The difficult choice in question likely being choosing one world to die for another to live.
But like all great Doctor Doom stories, for the story to lead to Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), we have to have the Earth die, and Battleworld be born from it. With that in mind, it's very possible Doom will manipulate the situation to his advantage, get the power to change reality, and be the true winner of the film, just like Thanos when he snapped.
Therefore, Doomsday is actually Doom's Day because he's proven, at least to himself, his immense intelligence in that he averted catastrophe and rewrote the future in his image: no Incursion, no heroes, only Doom.
With that in mind, it makes the movie title feel even more inspired because no other film in the series has gotten so creative with its titling. Considering Doctor Doom hasn't even been teased outside of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), it also gives us a clear look at how strong he is even though he missed years of build-up.
Doctor Doom Not Being the Biggest Threat Tells Us a Lot About His Character
The average Marvel Cinematic Universe fan has always seen Doom as a larger-than-life character, and in many ways he is in terms of his presence. However, when it comes to his actions, he's much more tempered in what he does. We often see him making grand gestures using science and magic, but in reality, he often doesn't make a move until his victory is assured.
In the case of Avengers: Doomsday, seeing that he may not be a true threat until the Incursion problem is solved shows us that this is the most comic-accurate version of the character yet. Doctor Doom isn't someone who takes unnecessary risks, and when the fate of two worlds is on the line, he likely won't make any moves unless it's to defend himself.
Avengers: Doomsday still holds many questions, but one thing we know for certain is that this Doctor Doom knows exactly what he's doing. The problem is no one else does, and that makes him an incredibly dangerous threat to the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. But even still, they also have to stop the literal end of the world before even thinking of challenging Doom.
