X-Men Cast Roundup: Every Confirmed & Rumoured Casting So Far

The Marvel machine is moving at full speed to assemble its new generation of X-Men, and we've got all the details about the cast here.
With mutants now officially a part of the group chat after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars looking set to clear a lot of pieces off the table, the upcoming X-Men reboot has suddenly moved towards the centre of the MCU conversation — especially regarding the cast.
Now, with all that Jean Grey speculation finally put to bed, and with Marvel's panel at the D23 fan event in Anaheim confirming some fan-cast rumours while throwing a few interesting spanners into the works at the same time, we finally have what looks like the core group for the upcoming movie. There are still a few notable gaps in the roster (more on them below) but one thing we can confirm is that Kevin Feige and his casting department are looking to Gen Z’s trendiest stars to take the franchise forward.

Sadie Sink as Jean Grey (Confirmed)
After months of speculation — which included a full press tour in which Tom Holland managed to let nothing slip — last week it was finally revealed that Sadie Sink’s character in Brand New Day was indeed Jean Grey: the first member of the new X-Men cast to appear in the franchise.
Famke Janssen first played the endlessly powerful, occasionally volatile and famously beautiful mutant in the original X-Men trilogy before popping up in The Wolverine and Days of Future Past. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner took the mantle briefly in X-Men: Apocalypse, but it’s Janssen who is set to return (and likely bid farewell to the role) in Doomsday this year.
With Sink’s Stranger Things fanbase now on board, the MCU will likely be hoping she sticks around for a while — which hopefully means we won’t have to go through all that Dark Phoenix stuff again, at least for a while…
Kit Connor as Cyclops (Confirmed)
With Grey confirmed, the next name everyone was curious to hear about was Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, aka Grey’s main squeeze. Both Drew Starkey (the lithe star of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer) and Cooper Hoffman (of Philip Seymour and Liquorice Pizza fame) were mentioned before Marvel confirmed that Kit Connor had taken on the role.
The English actor and sometimes “internet boyfriend” became something of a low-key indie sensation with the release of Netflix’s Heartstopper in 2022. Since then, he’s gone from strength to strength, picking up roles in Alex Garland’s Warfare and his upcoming Elden Ring adaptation while modelling for Loewe and playing Romeo to Rachel Zegler’s Juliet in a hugely successful Broadway production in 2024.
For viewers of a certain age, the optically enhanced character will always be associated with James Marsden — who will get to play him at least one more time in Doomsday before Connor picks up the ruby specs.
Samara Weaving as Emma Frost (Confirmed)
The second character after Jean who was confirmed by the X-Men casting, interestingly enough, was Emma Frost — who is set to be played by the Australian scream queen Samara Weaving (of Ready or Not and more recent Carolina Caroline fame), taking over from January Jones from X-Men: First Class.
Grey, Summers, and Frost are occasionally something of a love triangle in the comics, with the latter pair eventually taking over Xavier’s school after Grey’s fiery demise. Naturally, that plotline, if it ever happens, will be a million miles away, but the fact that these were the first characters confirmed certainly caught our eye.
Perhaps the ten years or so between Weaving and the other two actors rules that scenario out — but then again this is Samara Weaving, so why the hell would that matter?
Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier (Confirmed)
The toughest job for the X-Men casting team, I think, was to find an actor with the right blend of warmth and gravitas to fill Patrick Stewart’s (and, to a lesser extent, James McAvoy’s) shoes. When Stewart appears on-screen as Charles Xavier in Doomsday, it will be the ninth time in 25 years that he’ll have played the benevolent telepath — a role that’s about as tied to him now as Indiana Jones is to Harrison Ford.
One early (and tasty) rumour was that Tom Pelphrey (the Ozark breakout and recent Task star) was being eyed up, but the name that really did the rounds was Bill Skarsgård, who certainly has the looks to play a younger Professor X in what was shaping up to be a fledgling X-Men cast overall. Now it's finally been confirmed that none other than Christopher Abbott, the devilishly handsome star of movies like Sanctuary, Wolf Man and Poor Things, will be taking on the mantle.
Abbott's name had certainly been in the mix, but this is easily the most daring and surprising choice by Feige's team so far. Since breaking out in Girls in 2012, Abbott's career has been defined by the roles he's taken on in daring and provocative movies — like Brady Corbet's Vox Lux and Mona Fastvold's The Testament of Ann Lee. This will be by far his most prominent role yet.
Adam Driver as Mr Sinister (Confirmed)
It's no secret that Kevin Feige has been trying to coax Adam Driver into the MCU for years. As far back as 2022, rumours were doing the rounds that the wildly talented and versatile star had been in talks to play Reed Richards. Those were soon followed by talk of Dr Doom, but when RDJ had his shock reveal at SDCC two years ago, the fan-casting accounts all started to circulate around one name: Mr Sinister.
Those wishes have now come true, confirmed via a typically funny Driver appearance on-screen at the D23 fan event. After playing Kylo Ren in the recent Star Wars trilogy, this will add another iconic villain and franchise to Driver's otherwise eclectic career — a phenomenal 14-year run (since breaking out on Girls) that has seen him collaborate with many of the greatest living American filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese (Silence), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and James Grey (Paper Tiger).
In the comics, Mr Sinister (aka Nathaniel Essex) is born a human but then meets Apocalypse, who gives him powers and stops him from ageing. Essex is obsessed with creating superhumans and often uses his abilities to gain even more powers. He is said to have a particular interest in Cyclops and Jean, so expect that trifecta to be central to Schreier's movie. Also, expect plenty of Driver's signature brooding.
Inde Navarrette as Rogue (Confirmed)
The word on the street for the last few weeks had been suggesting that Inde Navarrette, the remarkable breakout star of Curry Barker's Obsession, was being lined up as a potential Mystique. For us, this always seemed like low-key fan-casting, which is why her announcement as Rogue at D23 was such a genuine shock (just listen to how the crowd reacts).
Whatever the case, it marks another insane high point in what has been one of the most dizzying rises of any star in recent history. As recently as March, you would have been hard-pressed to place Navarrette in a movie; now she's responsible for one of the most profitable movies ever made and could well follow up this massive casting announcement with a nomination at the Oscars next year. Good for her.
Born in Arizona, Navarrette can certainly claim to be more of a Southerner than the very-much Canadian Anna Paquin — who played the role four times between 2000 and 2014 and was essentially the audience’s surrogate in the first movie as she entered Xavier’s school for the first time. It’s unlikely that the MCU will replicate that, certainly with Navarrette (a very different kind of actress) now in the role. Either way, we look forward to seeing her with that iconic shock of white hair.
Maya Boyd as Storm (Confirmed)
Another huge, huge surprise at D23 was the announcement that newcomer Maya Boyd, who has precisely zero credits on her IMDb page, is set to step into Halle Berry's shoes to play Ororo "Storm" Munroe in Schreier's upcoming X-Men reboot. Boyd's career thus far has been as a rising star of the Broadway stage, where she broke out in a 2023 production of Merrily We Roll Along before winning rave reviews for her starring turn in & Juliet — a comedy musical rejig of the Shakespeare play, told from the Capulets' perspective — the following year.
Naturally, this was shock news, not least after rumours had done the rounds that the character was set to debut in Ryan Coogler's Black Panther 3. In the comics, Storm and T’Challa have a relationship at some point, and while Coogler would still have to rework that for T’Challa’s son (the recently announced David Jonsson) if he decides to use it, it’s still not outside the realms of possibility.
Asa Germann as Angel (Confirmed)
Back when this article was all rumours, I wrote that the tord on the street was "that Gen V breakout Asa Germann, who apparently only narrowly missed out on Cyclops, is now being considered for other parts." Given the actor's performances as Sam Riordan in that show — a character who's mostly a super-powerful mutant and a nice guy (at least in the first season), but also a little bit insane — I had a sneaking suspicion that Kevin Feige and co were eyeing him up to be the next Wolverine. Germann has now been officially cast as Warren Kenneth Worthington III, aka Angel, which makes all kinds of sense.
There's the blond mop of hair, the striking cheekbones, plus the brooding sense of superiority that he brought to Sam after the character's heel turn. To anyone watching that show, it was pretty clear that Germann would have a long career in the industry, but he's had to wait a minute for the roles to come along. In terms of big screen projects, his only real credit so far is playing Lucas in Scream 7.
Charles Melton as Beast (Rumoured)
Moving into the rumour mill, everyone and their auntie seemed pretty confident that Charles Melton was being lined up to join his Warfare co-star Kit Connor to play Hank McCoy (aka Beast) in the upcoming X-Men movie.
For us, this one made all kinds of sense. The handsome American-Korean star has been on a roll since leaving Riverdale in 2023: immediately winning critical acclaim and bags of awards for his supporting turn in Todd Haynes’ May December and, just last month, picking up his first Emmy nomination for Season 2 of Beef (a show created by Lee Sung Jin, who's writing the new X-Men) — but this one is still very much up in the air.
The big, blue, and very debonair genius has already been played by Nicholas Hoult and Kelsey Grammer — the latter of whom appeared in the role as recently as the post-credits scene in 2023’s The Marvels. Grammer will also return, as they say, in Avengers: Doomsday, but will he get to pass the baton? Whoever ends up playing him, we can at least be confident that Beast will feature.
Cailee Spaeny (Rumoured)
For a minute, it looked like Marty Supreme breakout Odessa A’zion was being lined up to play Rogue, but that one was quickly snubbed out as little more than perm-based fan-casting. The smart money was then on the always impressive Cailee Spaeny, who played the lead in 2024’s Alien: Romulus as well as Melton’s partner in Beef, meaning that the duo looked set for a reunion.
With Navarrette's casting, Spaeny is now very much in the wind, but I'm not ruling her out just yet. There's always Jubilee...
Magneto
Given Mr Sinister's confirmed involvement, it's likely that we'll have to wait for a future X-Men sequel before encountering a new MCU Magneto for the first time — which is probably a relief for Kevin Feige — but we can still play it out.
Sir Ian McKellen is always going to be near-impossible to replace, but we have seen it done once before with Michael Fassbender (who made the role his own from First Class on). It is, without question, one of the tastier parts in the X-Men universe — a formidable and seductive villain who always feels just a scene or two away from turning into a tragic anti-hero. The names that were mostly doing the rounds before Sinister was announced were Jensen Ackles (Supernatural and The Boys) and Bill’s brother Alexander (which would have been kind of amazing).
As Stewart and McKellen are roughly the same age, you might think the same goes for the characters, but in the comics Erik Lehnsherr is a good decade or so older than Xavier, which would make sense for any of the above. Whether they’ll continue to tie his backstory to WWII, however, I’m not so sure. Either way, Ackles feels the most likely.
Wolverine
Last but not least, we come to a casting call that even Kevin Feige must be losing sleep over. Like Stewart, Hugh Jackman has managed to play the role for 25 years without — as the character demands — really seeming to age all that much. In fact, even his death in James Mangold’s Logan hasn’t stopped him from coming back for more.
The internet has been compiling wishlists of potential future Logans for years — to the point that Henry Cavill even got to play a fan-fiction variant of the character in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Other names that tend to get thrown around in those conversations are Taron Egerton and Daniel Radcliffe, but neither of them feel like the same generation of star that Feige seems to be going for.
By the makeup of the casting so far, Marvel is clearly leaning towards buzzy up-and-comers, and given that Logan doesn’t necessarily have to look any older, it’s really quite up for grabs.
