Sometimes, the simplest premise can lead to the most entertaining end product — like a guy being swallowed whole by a sperm whale and fighting for his life to escape.

The trailers for Whalefall have certainly got people talking, and each of them has showcased exactly what the film is going to about. Now, with early reactions being positive about the film, it is now in cinemas, and audiences are rightly excited to go along for the ride.

But, is such a crazy idea based in any realm of reality, or is it the imagination of author Daniel Kraus, who wrote the book the film is based on, that has made it to the screen? We have done some deep diving to find out…

The Plot & Cast of Whalefall

Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin in Whalefall

Whalefall comes from acclaimed filmmaker Brian Duffield, who helmed 2022’s alien home-invasion film No One Will Save You, and legendary producer Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment, who produced such varied fare as A Beautiful Mind, In The Heart of the Sea, and The Grinch. Grazer secured the rights to the film before the book was even released, with 20th Century Studios winning the distribution rights a year later.

Jay (Austin Abrams) is a young diver who goes looking for his father’s (Josh Brolin) remains on the ocean floor, only to find himself caught in the middle of a sperm whale hunting a giant squid. The squid hooks him into the whale’s mouth, and the rest of the film follows his fight to escape over the course of an hour.

Leading the film is Austin Abrams, one of Hollywood’s hottest young actors right now. He is riding high on the success of the new Resident Evil, in which he starred, and has teamed up again with director Zach Cregger following last year’s Weapons.

Oscar nominee Josh Brolin plays Jay’s father in the film, with the two also starring together in Weapons. Elisabeth Shue (Hollow Man) plays Jay’s mother, with Jane Levy (Evil Dead) as his sister Eva, and Emily Rudd (One Piece) as his other sister, Nan.

Is Whalefall Based on a True Story? (Sort Of)

The true stories that inspired Whalefall occurred in 2020 and 2021, with two events that author Daniel Kraus used as the framework for his book. The first, which happened in California, involved a viral video of kayakers apparently being engulfed by a humpback whale, only for them to emerge safe and well after the ordeal.

The second was the story of Michael Packard, a lobster diver in the US who reported being swallowed by a humpback whale for approximately 30–40 seconds before being expelled. He suffered some injuries, but none were life-threatening.

Kraus also researched the ordeals and how they would look and feel by speaking to specialists and diving experts, studying marine mammals and giant squids, and conducting interviews for months before writing the novel. Drawing on this knowledge and real-life incidents, Kraus was able to give the book a greater sense of fear and realism than if he had relied solely on his imagination. Whether such an event would be survivable in real life remains to be seen.

In addition to these incidents, the novel draws on other inspirations, not least the biblical story of Jonah, who is swallowed by a whale and spends three days and three nights inside it before being released.

In the film, Jay is a troubled young man dealing with grief who must use his own knowledge and skills to escape.

In an interview with NPR, Kraus said: “When I came up with the premise of the book, it immediately struck me as something really primeval, almost. And it reminds us, I think, of when we used to be beings that had to worry about being swallowed, that had to worry about being eaten.”

In the same interview, Kraus also discussed the book’s meaning: “The book is really about death in a lot of ways. I mean, the story begins with the diver's father already dead and the idea of a whale fall, which is a giant whale that sinks to the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean, and the corpse lands — what it really does is it creates life.”

He added: “And we have to look into ourselves and, you know, determine, have we lived a life worthy of whale fall?”
