The 10 Most Unhinged Moments From The Inbetweeners
It’s been almost eighteen years since The Inbetweeners first graced our screens, and it’s no exaggeration to say that it has become one of the most recognisable comedies in the UK.
The series follows sixth former Will and his friends — Simon, Jay, and Neil — as they try to navigate life. The trouble is, they’re all extremely awkward and end up finding themselves in all kinds of hilarious scrapes.
The Inbetweeners ran for 3 Seasons and spawned 2 movies, and now, Netflix is going full steam ahead with a reunion movie featuring the original cast. Naturally, this news has us feeling nostalgic for the outrageous comedy. So, here’s a list of just some of the show’s most unhinged moments.
Will’s Unfortunate Exam Moment
We’re starting off strong with one of the most well-known moments in the series. In the final episode of Season 2, Will and the gang are feeling the crunch of exam season — although Will is the only one who seems to be actually revising. After replacing his meals with Pro Plus and foregoing bathing, Will gets progressively freaked out until that fateful moment in the exam hall where he takes a monumental risk — only for it to backfire. It was a valuable lesson, though, to never underestimate your farts.
The Fashion Show Finale
This is possibly the most unhinged and hilarious moment of the entire series. The first episode of Season 3 involves a charity fashion show headed by Carli. She ends up subbing Simon in for their “sexy” grand finale, which includes both of them wearing S&M gear. Sadly, an oblivious Simon has a wardrobe malfunction that derails the entire finale, making it something of a horror show as his private parts are exposed. I’m also a fan of this episode’s subplot, which involves Jay’s pierced ears getting progressively more infected.
“Friend!”
In Season 1 Episode 4, the way we said “friend” changed forever. In what was actually a rather genuine moment for the character, Jay makes a new friend. However, the boys can’t help but tease him for it throughout the episode, mockingly sticking their thumbs up and declaring “Friend!” at every opportunity. Eventually, this ridicule drives Jay insane, and he ends up jumping on his friend’s car bonnet screaming “friend” repeatedly. Needless to say, they weren’t mates after that.
Neil Punching A Fish
During a school trip to Swanage in Season 2 Episode 1, things take a surprisingly violent turn when the group end up on a boat and catch a fish. After struggling to know what to do with it, Neil determines that the kindest thing to do is kill it, and he does this by brutally beating the fish to death. I’m not sure how exactly he considered that to be a humane ending, but Neil’s mind is truly an enigma.
“Bus W***ers!”
This fateful and highly-quoted moment ruined bus rides in the UK for a whole generation. When Will and co were riding in Simon’s car in Season 2 Episode 4, Jay has the bright idea of yelling out at people waiting for the bus, calling them “bus w***ers.” This is followed by another hilariously pathetic moment when a man approaches them after the car gets stuck in traffic, leading to Simon repeatedly begging: “Sorry!”
Will’s Wig
After Jay uses hair removal cream on Will’s pubic area, the latter panics about what his date might think. So, in Season 2 Episode 5, he does the only logical thing and puts a wig down his trousers. Things then get complicated when his date subsequently pulls the wig out, which thoroughly kills the moment.
Simon Projectile Vomiting
Simon’s attempts to impress Carli never end well, but this moment from Season 1 Episode 2 might be the most unhinged and downright disgusting. After Will told Carli’s seven-year-old brother about terrorists, a drunken Simon ended up terrifying him more by asking Carli to talk about their feelings before projectile vomiting over the boy’s head.
The Dance™
Perhaps this one is cheating, as it actually comes from The Inbetweeners Movie, but in my opinion, it’s worthy of a spot on this list because of the sheer second-hand embarrassment that comes with it. As each character tries to awkwardly jive towards a group of girls, their dance moves get more and more cringeworthy, with my favourite being the little hop that Will does. The moment where it all comes together is just the icing on the cake, as Neil once again steals the show.
“I Think I Might Be Dead”
In Season 3 Episode 2, the gang go to a gig as Simon sets out to impress a girl called Tara. While at the gig, Will ingests cannabis, and ends up losing control over his arms. This leads to one of the most brilliantly bizarre moments in the series, as Will gets up on stage, asks for his mummy, and declares that he thinks he might be dead as his arms jerk sporadically. It’s physically painful to watch.
Will Attempting To Lose His Virginity
In a move that surprises pretty much everyone, Will somehow manages to pull a girl in Season 1 Episode 4. Not just any girl… no, he ends up charming Charlotte Hinchcliffe, who is in the year above him in sixth form, and Will brags to her about his extensive sexual experience. However, this is later proven to be a lie when they attempt to sleep together, and let’s just say the attempt was unsuccessful and embarrassing for everyone involved.
