Keanu Reeves Has Played Characters With This Name HOW Many Times!?
Keanu Reeves has one of the most distinctive names in Hollywood. The name Keanu is of Hawaiian origin and roughly translates as ‘cool breeze over the mountains.’
Its unusual nature definitely helped the star stand out from the sea of more ordinarily named actors around him, but when it comes to picking a role, Reeves often opts for more traditional names.
Throughout his career he has played a Kevin (The Devil’s Advocate), Bob (A Scanner Darkly), and a Scott (My Own Private Idaho), as well as three variants of both Tom (The Matrix, Street Kings and Teenage Dream) and Jack (Speed, Babes in Toyland, and Feeling, Minnesota). All are strong names for a lead character, but none are as attention grabbing as Keanu. Of all his character names, though, there is one that the actor returns to time and time again and it is perhaps the most common and generic name of them all: John.
Throughout his career, Keanu Reeves has played either a John, Johnny or Jonathan eight times across 13 projects. It doesn’t necessarily sound like a lot, but it is a little unusual for an actor to play a character with the same name more than once or twice outside of the confines of a franchise. The only other actor that springs to mind with a penchant for playing John is Casper Van Dien who has racked up six with Johnny Rico from Starship Troopers being his most popular. In contrast, several of Reeves’ John characters have become iconic roles for the actor. Read on to discover them all.
In 1991, thanks to his breakout role in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Keanu Reeves was known as Ted to the masses. That started to change after he starred as his first John, or more specifically Johnny, in Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break. Set in Los Angeles, Point Break finds Reeves’ newly qualified FBI agent Johnny Utah going undercover as a surfer to sniff out a group of bank robbers known as the Ex-Presidents. Utah’s situation becomes complicated when he develops a close bond with the head of the crew, Bodhi.
Not only is Point Break Keanu’s first time playing a John, but the film also granted him his first taste of action cinema. Featuring sky-diving, surfing, a gas station explosion, and one of the greatest foot chases ever, Point Break is ‘90s action cinema at its finest. Given how cool Johnny Utah is, it’s easy to see how Keanu Reeves became seduced by the character name thereafter.
Just a year after playing Johnny Utah, Reeves returned to the name when he played Jonathan Harker in Francis Ford Coppola’s Gothic horror adaptation, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. For anyone not familiar with the classic literary text, Harker is the lawyer sent overseas to do business with the reclusive Count Dracula. After the Count catches sight of a picture of Jonathan’s wife, Mina, he traps the lawyer, leaving him enslaved to his vampiric wives and freeing himself to make Mina his own.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a sumptuous adaptation of the novel and there’s hardly a frame where it does not look magnificent. Coppola’s decision to marry the Dracula story with that of Beauty and the Beast creates a haunting love story that had audiences unsure whose side to root for. Sadly for Reeves’ Jonathan, most fans prefer the union of Mina and Dracula.
Because playing one historical literary character called John wasn’t enough, Reeves followed up his turn as Jonathan Harker with the role of Don John in Much Ado About Nothing. Directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, Much Ado About Nothing is a faithful recreation of William Shakespeare’s play. The stacked cast includes Branagh himself, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, and Imelda Staunton, placing Reeves in excellent company.
The role of Don Jon is that of a melodramatic villain, and Reeves does an excellent job of chewing his Shakespearean text. A far more lesser John role than others in his career, working on Much Ado About Nothing did at least allow him to work with some of the best in the industry whilst he was still a fairly young actor.
Having taken a whole year off from playing a John, in 1995 Reeves returned as the titular character in Johnny Mnemonic. Based on a script by sci-fi cyberpunk author William Gibson, Johnny Mnemonic has a reputation for being a bit of a dud. The reality, though, is that this insane science-fiction action movie was just ahead of its time.
Set in the then-future of 2021, Reeves’ Johnny is a data courier. The job involves uploading secure information directly into the courier’s head, but after receiving a corrupt upload, Johnny must deliver his package before his head explodes. To complicate matters further, the Yakuza want what is in his head and will happily kill him to get it. Featuring supporting turns from Udo Kier, Dolph Lundgren, Ice-T, and Takeshi Kitano, Johnny Mnemonic is tonally everywhere all at once, but somehow that works to make it even more charming.
From 1995 to 2005, there was a ten year period where Keanu left the roles named John behind. Of course, during that timeframe he was tangled up playing Thomas ‘Neo’ Anderson in The Matrix movies. Once clear of Neo, though, Reeves was ready to be John again, signing on to play John Constantine in Constantine.
Based on the comic book series, Constantine tells of demon hunter John Constantine as he is drawn into a case involving a detective and the mysterious death of her twin sister. Keanu’s casting was first met with outrage, primarily because the John Constantine of the source material is blonde, and Keanu kept his trademark dark locks. Still, the resulting movie was a super stylish comic book adaptation, featuring some great performances, with Tilda Swinton’s worthy of most praise. It is another of Keanu Reeves’ back catalogue that has slowly been building up a following after an initial lukewarm response. Now, thanks to the superhero boom, it appears that a sequel is in the works, with Reeves’ once again on board.
Generation Um… provides both Keanu’s quietest and least seen John. Released in 2012 from director Mark Mann, Generation Um… is an intimate indie drama that chronicles a day in the life of three adults as they become embroiled with sex, drugs, and indecision.
A film channeling indie gems of the ‘90s such as The Doom Generation, and Before Sunset, Generation Um…goes heavy on conversations of existentialism and what it means to be human. It's a dense film to get through and, as such, it’s easy to understand why it has fallen by the wayside of Keanu’s career. But, if you want to see him doing something a little off the beaten track, this film is still worth a watch.
While early in his career Reeves was synonymous with Ted Logan, and later Neo, right now, the name Keanu Reeves is synonymous with the character of John Wick. After taking some time away from the spotlight, the plot of John Wick, which has a former hitman drawn back into the business after a group of criminals break into his house and kill his puppy, mirrored Keanu’s return to Hollywood. Thankfully, no dogs had to be harmed to bring Keanu back, but the sleeper hit of John Wick resurrected his career, and now he is one of the busiest actors working.
John Wick really is the perfect role for Keanu – the part allowing him to fall back on everything he has learned within the action genre. Reeves also commits 110% to the role, performing much of his stunt and fighting sequences himself, and in doing so, adding a lot of shock and awe to the viewing experience. If you’ve never seen a John Wick film, please do seek them out immediately as they are an energetic meshing of neon, jaw-dropping action and wry comedy. Considering Keanu has played John Wick in three sequels, spin-off Ballerina, and with a rumoured fifth film on the cards, this John is almost certainly his favourite John, but that doesn’t mean he’ll stop playing others…

Cyberpunk 2077: The Movie

Although not strictly a movie, videogame Cyberpunk 2077 is the most recent John that Keanu Reeves has portrayed. In the game, Reeves is back playing a Johnny, this time Johnny Silverhand. The gameplay follows V, a mercenary living in the dystopian Night City, who becomes bonded to an experimental biochip containing memories of the deceased Johnny Silverhand.
Rather than simply provide his vocals for the game series, Keanu Reeves also participated in full-body motion capture for the part. Reeves' commitment saw Silverhand’s role expanded during development, making him central to the overall narrative. There are currently two games in the Cyberpunk series, but given the climate of game to movie adaptations, surely it won’t be long before Reeves gets the chance to play Johnny Silverhand again.
