The Fallout Cast Reveal Which Guilty Pleasure They'd Smuggle Into a Vault

Unless you have been living inside your own nuclear bunker for the last couple of years, you will have heard of the television series Fallout. 

Created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, Fallout is one of the most well-received adaptations of a video game, holding an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes across both seasons. Fallout also somehow managed to make a second season better than the first with the scores rising from 93% to 96%!

During the press tour for Fallout’s second season, JustWatch’s Derek Sante spoke with the show's co-creator Geneva Robertson-Dworet and episode director Jonathan Nolan, as well as cast members Kyle MacLachlan and Annabel O’Hagan. Typically, when JustWatch crosses paths with someone from the world of film or television we grill them about what their favourite guilty pleasure film is, but this time we took a slightly different approach. 

Speaking to the team, Sante instead posed the question, “What movie or TV show would you take into the Vault?” It’s an interesting question and one that created some fascinating responses.

Jonathan Nolan Champions ‘Fallout’

The first to answer was Jonathan Nolan. The director has been asked a similar question in the past, but was thrown by the limitations of JustWatch’s version, saying: “Recently my answer was Nintendo Switch… but you didn’t offer video games…” After a little thinking, Nolan decided to keep things simple, “Fallout would be the obvious answer.” Having directed three of the 16 episodes, being trapped in a vault would give the director plenty of opportunity to catch up on what he missed. 

Set in a future post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, Fallout tells the story of the survivors of nuclear decimation, who range from sheltered folk that sought sanctuary in bunkers, to mutants and bandits. The show has been repeatedly praised for capturing the essence of the game with the performances of leads Ella Purnell and Walter Goggins also spoken of highly. If you’ve yet to catch the show, both seasons are available in full on Prime Video, and a third season has been greenlit, so now is as good a time as any to discover what all the hype is about.

‘Star Trek’ Presents An Opportunity To Boldly Go Places

Co-creator Geneva Robertson-Dworet also opted to go with the world of television, selecting Star Trek as her pick. Star Trek chronicles the adventures of the U.S.S Enterprise as they journey through the deepest reaches of space. The show began in 1966, running for three years, before spawning a multitude of spin-off shows and movies that have kept the brand alive 60 years later. 

Geneva Robertson-Dworet’s reasons for selecting Star Trek were very clever, telling us: “I’d bring Star Trek as there’s so many episodes.” The original version of Star Trek ran for 80 episodes, which is plenty to keep on healthy rotation within the confines of a bunker. 

As popular as Star Trek is, the show veered from brilliance to silly, sometimes within the blink of an eye. It is this unpredictability that saw the show go from cult to legendary status. It is also this quality for Geneva Robertson-Dworet that makes it a sound choice, remarking, “I feel that Star Trek is a great blend of quality and quantity.” Again it is a smart move as she can select an episode based on her mood, and in doing so, stave off the cabin fever for a good amount of time. 

Kyle MacLachlan Would Watch ‘Home Alone’ On Repeat

In contrast to both Jonathan Nolan and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, actor Kyle MacLachlan decided to go down the movie route. Picking just one movie is a risky move and the timeline to becoming sick of it is shortened exponentially, unless, of course, it is a film that you truly adore. For Kyle MacLachlan that movie is Home Alone, but his reasons for selecting it are tied to the second season of Fallout. 

Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin joined Fallout’s second season as Lacerta Legate, a high-ranking member of Caesar’s Legion. The role marked the actor’s first real return to screens since his six-episode arc in the tenth season of American Horror Story. Although the former child star has been out of the limelight for a number of years, his portrayal of Kevin McCallister has never left MacLachlan’s heart. 

Speaking to JustWatch he shared, “As an ode to Macaulay Culkin, I would bring Home Alone. So we’d watch Home Alone again and again. Just because of Macaulay and I really like him.” As good as Home Alone is, personally I’m not sure I could handle all that Christmas saccharine on repeat, but his Fallout co-star Annabel O’Hagen agreed with MacLachlan’s choice, “I love that. That’s a good one.”
