Robert Eggers’ latest horror Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 remake of the same name. With gothic visuals and compelling performances by Lily Rose-Depp and Bill Skarsgård, this film marks a new high among all other adaptations of Nosferatu.

As each Nosferatu movie is a standalone vampire tale on its own, there is no proper order to watch these Gothic horrors.

However, if you wish to see how each adaptation has changed the storyline and visuals over time, it’s best to watch them in order of their release date. You can kick things off with FW Murnau’s 1922 original which plays out as a silent film, a pinnacle in German Expressionist horror. The film is unforgettable with Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a rat-faced stand-in for Count Dracula. The filmmakers had to avoid using the name and likeness of Dracula as novelist Bram Stoker’s estate had issues over licensing rights.

Then, follow up your Nosferatu binge by Werner Herzog’s colorful remake Nosferatu the Vampyre that features Klaus Klinski as the titular blood-sucking Count. The film was alternatively shot in German and English and both versions are available to watch online.

Before you move on to the next Nosferatu remake, have a brief detour to a fictional movie about the making of Nosferatu. In Shadow of a Vampire, Willem Dafoe plays Max Shrenck as an actual vampire whom director FW Murnau (John Malkovich) casts as the lead in his film (unbeknownst to the rest of his cast). It’s a bizarrely funny and hauntingly shocking exploration of the myth behind Nosferatu.

Interestingly, Dafoe also played the role of a vampire hunter in the latest iteration of Nosferatu. Starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, the new Nosferatu remake is directed by The Witch and The Lighthouse’s Robert Eggers. The film is a stylised recreation of the 1922 original proving how the German silent movie still remains relevant more than a century later.

As the first on-screen depiction of the vampire from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, our guide shows you how and where you can find every Nosferatu movie in order. We also offer you all the options to find them for streaming online.
