'Mission: Impossible' Ending, Explained
The Mission: Impossible franchise started as a TV series in the '60s that later became a massive movie franchise starring Tom Cruise, and as the series evolved, so did its characters. Ethan Hunt beat the odds for seven films before his final outing in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025).
But the climax of the film and the franchise as a whole didn't leave anything to chance, as the stakes were higher than ever. But by making the villain a powerful AI, it also led to some meta commentary on the subject in the realm of creativity and its place on the world stage.
Ethan Hunt Was Pushed to the Limit in 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning'

By the time Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning started, our heroes were already on the back foot in trying to stop the artificial intelligence known as The Entity from making moves that would destroy the world. However, the odds were low, and Ethan Hunt had no other choice but to trust those around him to complete his mission and stop The Entity.
This led to him losing a friend in Luther, going on a suicide mission to a sunken submarine and nearly dying in the process, and finally trusting his team to stop The Entity while he took the fight to a longtime foe in Gabriel. Meanwhile, the heroes also have to go against the IMF, who want to keep The Entity for their own means, which would likely end in yet another apocalypse event.
As the two fight in a wild aerial battle, Grace, Benji, and the rest of Ethan's team have only a few moments to trap The Entity in a small device and just barely succeed. But this final battle, and even the whole film, was designed to push Ethan farther than he had ever gone and show that the title of Mission: Impossible means something. In fact, this is the film that has Ethan endure more than he ever had, and in a short amount of time. Every stunt performed was not only real but was a race against time, as Ethan had to think on the fly to ensure his mission would be a success.
AI Was More Than a Villain in 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning'
AI has been a topic in Hollywood for years as it continues to advance, and studios continue to experiment with it against the wishes of the creatives that made the industry great. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning feels like a clear-cut answer to this discourse, as it shows how AI, no matter how powerful it is, is still an algorithm
However, it also shows the power it has, as the film shows people in the world worshipping The Entity and governments brought to their knees, unsure of what could come next. But the only thing that could defeat it is faith in one another. Ethan relies on the humans in power to believe in him, and they do. From the President to the captain of an aircraft carrier, it's all about connections that kept the mission alive, and with all technology being monitored, everything had to be written down and handled analog, making the urgency all the more integral.
This message, of humans needing to trust each other over machines, feels poignant now more than ever and, unfortunately, is still relevant. The only thing that AI can't account for is thee feelings of humans and how they can change, and that's what makes Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning feel so integral in the conversation.
'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' Ended the Franchise on a High Note and a Hope

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning sees Ethan reunite with his team as Grace gives him the device that contains The Entity. It's the last time we will likely see the team, but there's also a glimmer of hope that even if Ethan isn't there, the missions could still continue.
But there's also a hope that the technology in our world that we have to constantly contend with isn't able to take us over because the safest hands are still our own. By Grace handing Ethan The Entity, it proves that it tells us we are the architects of our fate, for better or worse. Ethan's mission may be done, and the franchise may be over, but the missions aren't over, and only we can rely on each other to do what's right. Even still, there's a bittersweet feeling in knowing that Ethan's story is essentially over. He gave everything for the mission, but it's logical that fans would want to see more from him.
