Fans of violent games are eating pretty well this month. Mortal Kombat II (2026) delivers all of the violence and gore you would expect from the series, and now, Devil May Cry (2025) is finally back on Netflix. It’s not every day that an animated series really captures the spirit and tone of the early 2000s, but Devil May Cry’s grungy vibe and reckless sense of fun give it a unique flavor all its own—that, and the nu-metal slaps.

With Season 2 also lasting eight episodes, and Devil May Cry sitting at #30 on the streaming charts, people are ready and eager to see some more devil-slaying action. If you’ve already binged Season 2 and want to know how it sets up the hypothetical and inevitable third season, here’s a quick recap of what’s happened.

What Happened In ‘Devil May Cry’ Season 2?

Dante posing with two guns in Devil May Cry

By the time Devil May Cry Season 1 ended, it wasn’t exactly going well for Dante. Sure, the White Rabbit was killed, but things quickly spiraled out of control, and Season 2 begins on a pretty chaotic note.

The season mostly focuses on the brutal war between the United States and Makai, with the United States using the White Rabbit’s attack as a go-ahead to launch a total invasion. Because Devil May Cry is about as subtle as The Boys (2019) with its political commentary, it doesn’t take a genius to see the war between humans and demons as an allegory for the Iraq War. There’s plenty of shady behavior on both sides, but the private military contractor Uroboros and its CEO Arius are clearly manipulating the United States and Makai for some unknown goal.

But the meat of Season 2 is mostly the complicated relationship between Dante and his brother Vergil. We get details on Vergil’s backstory and why, despite being half-human, he decides to side with the Makaians. Sometimes it leads to the brothers teaming up, but when they fight, it’s pretty fantastic, both emotionally and visually. It’s a bit darker than the first season, but this adaptation of Devil May Cry 2 and elements of Devil May Cry 3 doesn’t forget to have fun now and then with some solid one-liners and ridiculous action scenes.

How Does ‘Devil May Cry’ Season 2 End?

Dante with demons behind him in Devil May Cry

By the time we reach the end of the season, things aren’t looking good for Dante and Vergil. Arius has revived the God of Chaos, Argosax, and by sending both to Makai, Dante and Vergil have inadvertently allowed Mundus, the king of Makai, access to the human world to conquer.

Mundos kills Argosax and Arius, but before Dante and Vergil can seal the portal between worlds, Mundus intercepts them and attempts to stop the brothers. He tries to convince Vergil to rejoin his side after the revelation that Mundus killed their mom. While Dante refuses to join Mundus, Vergil has other plans. He still hates Mundus and wants nothing more than to kill him, but he agrees with Mundus’ ideas that humans are weak and demons are the superior species. Vergil then defeats Dante, sends him through the portal, and seals it behind him, before claiming that he will do what their father Sparda was unable to do and kill Mundus and take over Makai as its new ruler.

While we don’t see the aftermath of Vergil’s battle with Mundus, we do see the aftereffects of Argosax’s rampage in the human world. New York City is in ruins, the president and vice president are dead, martial law has been declared, and Dante is left unconscious in the middle of the street. As for Lady, she finally learns that her father, John Arkham, is the Jester, the demon advisor to Mundus, who was also the government’s mole in his court. While Dante wants nothing more than the two of them to iron out their relationship, Lady can’t until her father is dead, driving off to find a way into Makai and killing him once and for all.

How Does ‘Devil May Cry’ Season 2 Set Up Season 3?

Dante & Virgil in Devil May Cry

Showrunner Adi Shankar has big plans for the Devil May Cry Season 3, as each of the main characters is gearing up for major fights in Makai. Both Lady and Vergil end Season 2 in interesting places, with both now motivated by vengeance more than ever. While Dante has said that he regrets the cloud of darkness that loomed over his head because of his desire for revenge, Vergil and Lady can’t escape it. Vergil wants nothing more than to kill Mundus, and Lady thinks the only way she can achieve peace is by killing her father.

In all likelihood, Mundus will most likely become the big villain of Season 3. Now that we’ve seen how strong he is, it’s more than likely that Vergil will lose his fight against him, just like in Devil May Cry 3. Because of this, Vergil will become enslaved to Mundus as Nelo Angelo, and Dante will most likely have a rematch against his brother and put him out of his misery, like in the original Devil May Cry.

There is a distinct other possibility, though: Vergil may defeat Mundus and become the ruler of Makai. If so, then we’ll most likely get a more traditional adaptation of Devil May Cry 3, with Vergil and the Jester conspiring together to take over the human world, leaving Dante and Lady to defeat their estranged family members. It would be an interesting way to build on the themes of family and revenge that Season 2 established so well, but not very likely given how that would undercut the clear threat of Mundus. Devil May Cry Season 2 may not have ended on a huge spectacle like the first season, but Season 3 is already shaping up to be an interesting and more character-driven trip through Hell.

When a mysterious villain threatens to open the gates of Hell, a devilishly handsome demon hunter could be the world's best hope for salvation.
