Peacock's Crystal Lake brings the Friday the 13th franchise back to its roots. While Jason Voorhees usually gets all the credit, it's Pamela Voorhees who truly started it all. And the prequel series sets out to explore the power of a mother's love after insurmountable loss. It does so by taking some leaps that fans will be surprised by, and that I'll explore in this Crystal Lake ending explainer.

While I'm breaking down the Ending of Crystal Lake Season 1, I also want to dive into the lore changes to Jason and how he survived. Here, his survival wasn't handwaved away like in the movies. What happened to both Jason and Pam was much darker and twisted. And if we look back to what happened to Betsy Palmer's version of Pam, there are major differences that could lead to a vastly different future for Linda Cardellini's character.

How Does 'Crystal Lake' End?

Pamela Voorhees in Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake ends with Pam Voorhees cackling while declaring that these woods are now hers and her sons'. Backtrack a little bit, and this final episode sees Pam's husband, Elias Wittering, arrive in the New Jersey town with his Bellflower goons by his side. Elias comes to the diner, gets Pam's address, and finds out that his son had drowned. He eventually finds Pam at the sheriff's office alongside Sheriff Brooks and Brianna. Pam gives herself up to her ex-husband to avoid a shootout, but it still happens, leaving the sheriff injured.

As Elias drives away with a kidnapped Pam, they encounter a mysterious hooded figure in the middle of the road who causes the car to crash. Pam makes a run for it, and Elias and his goons follow. Elias eventually finds Pam in the shack that Jason and Grace used to play in. In the meantime, the hooded figure kills Elias' goons.

Elias is ready to take Pam back to Bellflower when the hooded figure appears. Pam claims that it's Jason, but it's not until Elias pulls the hood off the figure that Pam's statement is proven true. Jason kills Elias, but while Jason chokes Pam, he has vivid flashbacks of the happy life he once had at Crystal Lake with his mother. When he releases her, you think everything is going to be okay. It's not.

Ralph ends up shooting Jason, and when Pam goes to stop him, they turn around, and Jason is gone. That's when the cackling starts from Pam, and the cooky Ralph dares to call her crazy.

How Did Jason Survive in 'Crystal Lake'?

Jason survived drowning in Crystal Lake because of the experiments that his father put him through as a child. Elias Wittering worked for Bellflower, which had a research division interested in creating people who could survive basically anything. When Pam was having trouble with her pregnancy, Elias manipulated her to come to Bellflower and get treatment there. What she didn't know was that this treatment was meant to create a superhuman.

At Bellflower, Jason received radiation treatments and injections under Project Argonaut. Even at a young age, his drawings showed that he was terrified of his father and the company's treatments. It caused his hair to fall out and for him to have seizures. Still, Elias boasted about the procedure and said that trauma only made Jason stronger.

This is where the drowning comes in. When Jason was a baby, he experienced the trauma of drowning in the bathtub. Miraculously, or because of the treatments, he came back stronger. The same thing happened to him when he drowned in Crystal Lake. He died and came back stronger, the trauma of the event causing an accelerated growth spurt and strength that allowed him to take down anyone, even his dad.

What Happened to Pamela Voorhees in 'Friday the 13th'?

Betsy Palmer's Pamela Voorhees with the Camp Crystal Lake sign behind her

Pamela Voorhees acted as the main antagonist of the first Friday the 13th movie in 1980. Like the version from Crystal Lake, she lost her son after he drowned. That drove her over the edge, and she ended up killing the camp counselors who weren't watching her kid. When the camp reopened, she returned to kill those who engaged in sinful acts, just like they had been on the day Jason drowned.

Eventually, Alice Hardy, a camp counselor at Crystal Lake, kills Pamela by beheading Pam with her own machete. Jason, who was very much alive in the woods, witnessed the death and went on his own killing spree as a means of vengeance. As for what happened to Pamela's head? Well, Jason kept it in his cabin on a shrine.

Has 'Crystal Lake' Been Renewed for Season 2?

At the time of writing, there is no confirmation that Crystal Lake has been renewed for Season 2. According to official materials, the show is called a prequel series. Even IMDb doesn't have it labeled as a limited miniseries. So, Season 2 isn't out of the question.

If Crystal Lake were to come back for Season 2, it could explore more about Bellflower. Despite Elias saying that Pam's selfishness had destroyed 10 years of research, there's no way that this company put all its eggs in one basket. There have to be other children like Jason. However, that would create a completely different dynamic that would pull away from what we know and love about the Friday the 13th franchise, aka Jason himself.

If anything, it would be interesting to see how Pam puts her life back together after the events of Season 1. Because whatever happens between now and Friday the 13th has already deviated from the original timeline of events. So why not go for some bigger changes for a potential Crystal Lake Season 2?
