Leviticus: Plot & Cast Explained Plus Potential Release Date
After premiering to rave reviews in Sundance back in January (where many critics described it as a queer update of It Follows), Leviticus already looks like one of the hottest horror movies of 2026.
In the piece below, you'll find everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, from its plot, production and cast to when and where you can see Leviticus when it does release.
Read on to learn more and hit the guide below to find out where to watch some of the titles mentioned on services like AppleTV, Netflix, Prime Video and elsewhere.
What We Know About The Leviticus Plot [Spoiler Free]

Leviticus is a queer indie horror movie that focuses on the mutual infatuation of two teenage boys in a religious town in present day Australia.
To get an idea of the horror element in this one, imagine something in the region of Curry Barker’s recent smash hit Obsession or the Dave Franco and Alison Brie movie Together from last year, in that the supernatural terrors directly reflect the characters’ erotic feelings towards each other — in Leviticus, which is directed by Adrian Chiarella, it's a demon that takes the form of the person you have a crush on.

Having already played in Sundance, SXSW, and the prestigious New Directors/New Films festival in New York this year, there’s no shortage of Leviticus coverage out there if you’re looking to dig a bit deeper on the plot before seeing it.
If you’d rather maintain a little mystery about what happens, however, let’s just say that it’s being described as a queer coming-of-age horror that blends It Follows with Heated Rivalry.
Where you’ve seen the cast of Leviticus before

As a debut movie from an Australian director, there are naturally not huge amount of big names attached to this one — but you might be more familiar with them than you think.
The most recognisable is obviously Mia Wasikowska, an actress who was unavoidable in 2010s indie cinema (Jane Eyre, Only Lovers Left Alive, Maps to the Stars) but who’s kind of gone a little off the radar recently.
If you first got to know Wasikowska for her breakout role in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 2010, it might come as a surprise to hear that she plays the mother of a teenage boy here — whose name is Naim and who’s played by Joe Bird, one of the breakout stars of the recent Aussie horror smash Talk to Me.
The other lead role, his love interest Ryan, is played by Stacy Clausen—another Aussie up-and-comer who appeared in the Netflix movie Thrash earlier this year.
Alongside those key roles, the supporting cast features Davida McKenzie (who played Kitty in Silent Night and is the younger sister of Leave No Trace's Tomasin) as Izzie, Ewen Leslie (The Nightingale) as Rod, and the veteran Australian character actor Nicholas Hope (Scooby-Doo, The Invisible Man) as a presumably creepy healer.
When and where to see Leviticus
If you missed Leviticus’ UK premiere at SXSW London in June, you probably won’t have to wait too long to see it. A date has yet to be set (at the time of writing), but given the buzz and the fact that indie giants NEON are behind it, I imagine there won't be much of a gap after its US theatrical release on June 19th.
Expect it to land before the summer is out, with a move to streaming sometime later in the year. More as we get it.
