Furious: Where You've Seen The Cast Of Hulu's Buzzy New Crime Show Before

If you’re a prestige drama fan who’s been sensing a bit of a mid-summer lull (at least since the end of Widow’s Bay), the new Hulu series Furious has a whole lot to offer—and not least a cast of immediately likeable if not-quite-placable stars. 

Loosely based on a 1987 Hollywood thriller called Black Widow, the show essentially follows two women: a serial killer who targets wealthy men and the FBI agent on her trail. With three episodes now on offer, it's a show that appears to be homing in on some familiar shades of corruption from some very recent news stories—enough that it's already being called the first great crime series of the post-Epstein files era. 

Helmed by Elizabeth Meriwether (the ever-evolving showrunner behind New Girl, The Dropout and Dying for Sex), Furious also boasts one of the most smartly assembled casts on TV this year. Read on to find out where you’ve seen them before. 

Emmy Rossum (Alice)

Most fans will know Emily Rossum for her iconic portrayal of Fiona Gallagher across nine years and over 100 episodes of the US Shameless, but the Furious star has been acting since the age of 11. Rossum got her big break in the early ‘00s, when she appeared in a small role in the Oscar-winning Clint Eastwood movie Mystic River before playing the love interest to both Jake Gyllenhaal’s Sam Hall in The Day After Tomorrow and to Gerard Butler’s eponymous Phantom of the Opera in 2004.

Since then, Rossum, who also works as a musician, has released a couple of albums while repositioning herself as a star of the small screen. Her lead role as the brilliant but troubled detective Alice Black in Furious might be her most impressive performance yet. 

Lola Petticrew (Catherine)

Having delivered a similar mix of intensity and vulnerability as the young Dolours Price in Say Nothing recently, it’s hard to think of an actor better fitted to the role of Catherine Grace (Furious’ angel of death) than Lola Petticrew. The 30-year-old Irish star has been making their way up through the industry since 2017, appearing opposite fellow up-and-comers like Anya Taylor-Joy (in Here Are the Young Men) and George Mackay (Wolf) in a variety of independent British films. 

Petticrew’s breakthrough came in 2022, however, with a role in the MeToo drama She Said and a recurring part as Izzy Brannick on Bloodlands. Say Nothing was released two years later and their star has been on the rise ever since. Keep an eye out for them in the upcoming Cannes favourite I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning and the currently in-production Assassin's Creed TV show. 

Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Nora)

Though a widely respected and Tony-nominated actress on (and off) Broadway, Quincy Tyler Bernstine’s co-starring turn in Furious has been a long time coming. Since 2008, she’s worked with legendary directors like Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married), Spike Lee (Da Sweet Blood of Jesus), Noah Baumbach (While We’re Young, White Noise) and Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) but never with a particularly juicy or central role.

Bernstine is probably best known to international audiences for her work in TV, where she’s had recurring roles in shows like Power and Ray Donovan, and appeared on And Just Like That.... Her deliciously boozy and nihilistic portrayal of FBI agent Nora Washington in Furious feels like a whole other level.

Scoot McNairy (Danny)

For the last 20 years, Scoot McNairy has been gradually making his name as the kind of familiar character actor who you just like having around. After a surprise breakout with the low-budget sci-fi hit Monsters in 2010, he started landing small roles in major, starry movies like Argo, 12 Years a Slave and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. But if there’s a recent film you might know him from, it’s probably his near-dialogue-free portrayal of a dying Woody Guthrie in A Complete Unknown. 

In Furious, McNairy costars as Danny, an NYPD detective who used to be Alice’s partner when she was still a cop—and, going by the way he looks at her in the first few episodes, seems to want to be a different kind of partner to her in the future... 

Jake Lacy (Marshall)

Almost every big role in Jake Lacy’s career has been some kind of husband, boyfriend, or ex. Early on, these characters tended to be nice (like Pete in The Office, or Fran in Girls), then all of a sudden (thanks mostly to The White Lotus) they started being mean. In Furious, it is definitely the latter.

For the show, Lacy gives a typically commanding turn as Marshall Connolly, an NYPD detective who was once Alice’s long-term boyfriend and is now her abusive ex. 

Rob Yang (Choi)

Like McNairy, Rob Yang has one of those character actor faces that you’re just always happy to see, regardless of what show or movie they're in. So far, a typical Choi role is usually a buttoned-up professional with a glimmer of menace or conspiracy behind the eyes—which is exactly the kind of person that his FBI agent Frank Choi in Furious appears to be.

You’ll probably recognise him for playing Vaulter CEO Lawrence Lee on Succession or for his appearances in movies like The Bourne Legacy or The Menu.

Rob Delaney (Oliver Charles)

In the first three episodes of Furious, Rob Delaney delivers a wonderfully balanced mix of sleaziness and oily charm as the lawyer Oliver Charles—the first man Catherine seduces and destroys. 

Delaney is already something of a TV veteran, having co-starred in Catastrophe alongside his fellow writer and creator Sharon Horgan. On the big screen, Delaney is usually found playing suited-up types in action movies like Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning or Hobbs & Shaw. If you know him from any movie, though, it’s probably for his hilarious work as Peter Wisdom in the Deadpool franchise. 

Hope Davis (Emma Easton)

Another actor who viewers will likely remember from Succession is Hope Davis—in the HBO show, she played Sandy Furness' daughter—but she is also something of a Hollywood veteran, having first appeared on screens in Flatliners back in 1990. 

Since then, Davis has been a mainstay of American indies, appearing in modern gems like Synecdoche, New York and Asteroid City while picking up a Golden Globe nomination for her work on American Splendor in 2003. MCU fans will even remember her for playing Tony Stark’s mother, Maria, in Captain America: Civil War. 

In Furious, she plays Emma Easton, the daughter of a powerful billionaire.

Steve Way as Alden, Peter McRobbie as Jay Easton, Chloe Troast as Becky, Danny McCarthy as Ed George

The cast of Furious is so strong that it only feels right to give a shoutout to some of the smaller roles.

Jay Easton, Emma’s wealthy father, is played by the Australian actor Peter McRobbie (who you’ll definitely know from movies like Bridge of Spies and Brokeback Mountain). Another veteran character actor who pops up is Danny McCarthy, who played Agent Hale on Prison Break in the ‘00s—along with various other law enforcement roles over the years. Ramy fans will also be happy to hear that Steve Way is set to appear in later episodes, as is the former SNL cast member Chloe Troast.
