Despite not being a well-known figure until the 2010’s, Johnson’s career started in the 90s when she had a small role in Crazy in Alabama (starring alongside her mom, Melanie Griffith). But her first notable role came in 2010 with The Social Network, which told the story of Facebook’s tumultuous creation and controversial rise on Harvard’s campus.
But it was 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey that really turned Johnson into an international celebrity. The movie was based on the bestselling 2011 novel and centered around the erotic and kinky sexual relationship between a business mogul and a college student. The movie constantly forced Johnson’s character to ask what was more important, true love or sexual gratification.
The film (and book) were controversial but incredibly popular, with the movie grossing more than $569 million at the box office. Johnson would go on to star in two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, both becoming box office hits as well.

A remake of the 1977 classic, the film follows an American girl named Susie (Johnson) who is admitted to a prestigious dance academy in West Berlin. But it soon becomes clear the school is run by a coven of witches who are willing to do anything and kill anyone to retain power.
Suspiria was lauded for its cinematography, lighting, and colors, making it a truly dazzling and dizzying movie that harkened back to the golden era of arthouse cinema. It also picked up an impressive number of awards and nominations at film festivals around the world.
