Making a name for himself as a video essayist, Kogonada is an adept analyst of the technical skills required to make a movie. He has worked with prestigious institutions such as Sight & Sound, The Criterion Collection, and the British Film Institute. Trading analysis for action, he wrote, produced, and directed his first movie, “Columbus” (2017), which was noted for its tender treatment of friendship and visual depictions of architecture. He went on to helm “After Yang” (2021), starring, among others, Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith as parents to an android teenager who cares for their adopted daughter. Kogonada reunited with Colin Farrell for the surreal romantic fantasy “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” (2025) with a score from Studio Ghibli regular Joe Hisaishi. Kogonada helmed the experimental drama “Zi” (2026) starring another frequent collaborator, Haley Lu Richardson. On the small screen, Kogonada has directed episodes of the drama series “Pachinko” (2022) and the Star Wars show “The Acolyte” (2024).
