The Connection Between Fall 2 And Fall 1, Explained

What is the connection between Fall and Fall 2, and how does it impact the new movie? 

Scott Mann’s Fall was a massive hit when it arrived on streaming. The survival horror stranded two friends 2000 feet up in the air with no way down. Even the most height-hardy viewers find themselves wavering while watching as it is perfectly shot to induce maximum vertigo. 

Given the success, a sequel - Fall 2 - has been made, and it once again places two women in peril. Sequels, especially those in horror, go in one of two directions. They either re-join the same characters or follow an entirely new cast as they make all the same mistakes. Fall 2 follows neither path, choosing instead to merge the two, continuing the story set-up in Fall, but with brand new characters. 

What Happened In Fall?

In Fall, best friends Becky and Hunter find themselves stuck atop an isolated TV tower after a YouTube stunt goes awry. Set a year after the death of Becky’s husband, Dan, Hunter is now an adrenaline influencer going by the name 'Danger D' and encourages Becky to join her on her next mission to climb the B67 tower, the fourth-highest structure in America.

After the pair reach the summit and scatter Dan’s ashes, a section of their ladder disintegrates, and the duo become stranded. 

How Fall 2 Ups The Stakes Of Fall

There is a rule that sequels should always go bigger than the first film, and Fall 2 definitely does that. Fall found Becky and Hunter stuck 2,000 feet in the air, but this time new characters Jax and Luce become stuck around 4,000 feet up after a rockslide interrupts their cliffside plank walk on the fictitious Mount Kwan in Thailand.

Being so high up, the pair must also battle potential altitude sickness on top of everything else, making for a white-knuckle survival experience that ups the ante from the original. 

How Does Shiloh Fit Into Fall 2?

During the climax of Fall, Shiloh, or 'Hunter' as Becky called her, fell to her death, leaving Becky the sole survivor of their ordeal. Although dead, the character plays an integral part in Fall 2 as the story follows her guilt-riddled sister, Jax. Very different to Shiloh, Jax is far from an adrenaline junkie and prefers to keep her feet on the ground. However, in the wake of Shiloh’s death, which has gone viral, Jax is convinced by Shiloh’s friend Luce to follow in her sister’s footsteps. 

Adventurer Shiloh kept a book full of all of her achievements and planned stunts, and next on her list was a Plank Walk on Mount Kwan in Thailand. This inspires Luce and Jax to complete the mammoth feat in honour of Shiloh. Throughout the experience, Jax remembers her sister, meaning that there is a whole lot more of Shiloh in Fall 2 than most will expect.

Why Does Jax Go To Mount Kwan?

Jax agrees to join Luce on the jaunt to Mount Kwan to honour her sister’s death. She is convinced by Luce that the adventure will help her process her complex feelings for Shiloh while also enabling her to overcome some deep-rooted fears. 

If your sister had died doing a high-stakes aerial stunt, would you really attempt your own? Especially if you were in no way as trained as her? Probably not, but without Jax signing up to do the Plank Walk on Mount Kwan, there would be no film. Jax and everyone else within the film clearly view what happened to Becky and Shiloh as a freak accident, which is understandable.

Given that Jax and Luce are accompanied by a guide, Jon, it initially makes their trip sound safer, but the reveal that the section they want to walk along has been decommissioned years before makes it pretty hard to understand Jax’s logic. 

Will There Be A Third Fall Film?

At the same time as working on Fall 2, the writer - and director of the original - Scott Mann was also working on a script for a third movie.

This means that there will indeed be a third film in the series, one that will continue to link into the previous movies, creating a narratively complete trilogy. Quite how the same interconnected people can keep getting themselves into scrapes thousands of feet in the air makes little sense, but the same could be said about most slasher movie final girls.
