[Duke] is a man who is an elite-level fighter and on the very same night that he wins the heavyweight championship of the world, his entire life, his entire world collapses. He loses everything he ever cared about: his family, his brother, his life, his entire future, his freedom. So the questions as the center of him became extremely compelling you know, because what does that do to someone? When you experience that level of darkness, you lose everything you ever cared about. What does that do to you? What do you become? And is there a way back? And so all of the work is really centered on an understanding of the reality of that, and I know a fair bit about pain, and so perhaps that’s something that moved me when I first had those early scripts.
