Addressing the obvious question first: Yes, Domhnall Gleeson is Brendan Gleeson’s son. In fact, the pair have worked together a number of times, most notably in the dark comedy movie “Calvary” (2014) which was directed by John Michael McDonagh. Gleeson has certainly stepped out of his father’s shadow, though. He started out in short films and lesser known features, but from 2010 onwards, Domhnall has really made his mark. Supporting roles in romantic drama “Never Let Me Go” (2010) and the Coen Brothers’ hearty Western flick “True Grit” (2010) helped establish Gleeson, while a leading role in “About Time” (2013) really made him a household name. He has also popped up in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (2010) as Bill Weasley, in the scintillating comic book adaptation of “Dredd” (2012) and was involved in one of the best episodes of “Black Mirror” (2013). Arguably his finest work was in Alex Garland’s thought-provoking sci-fi flick “Ex Machina” (2013), where his character, Caleb, is tasked with testing a groundbreaking new development in artificial intelligence. His biggest role, however, would have to be as General Hux in the “Star Wars” (2015–2019) sequel trilogy. He showed his nasty side there, but we’ve seen the softer, more playful elements of his acting in the kids movie “Peter Rabbit” (2018) and in the comedy series “The Paper” (2025–).
