5 Questions 'X-Men '97' Season 2 Didn't Answer
X-Men '97 (2024) Season 2 has just wrapped up and gave us an exciting and unexpected conclusion that resulted in the death of a beloved X-Man: Nightcrawler. But it also saw the defeat of Apocalypse and Gambit back from the dead following his death in Season 1.
But for every great thing that happened in this finale, there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding plot points and characters that were teased and never touched on again. More than that, some of these teases would've been great to get fans ready for X-Men '97 Season 3, and yet, the season ends on a high note with multiple loose ends.
Where Is Onslaught In 'X-Men '97'?
Onslaught is a powerful entity that combines the darkest parts of Professor X and Magneto. A powerful foe, the only one who could stop him was Franklin Richards, and it involved a complete universe reboot. But X-Men '97 had been teasing this villain since the end of Season 1.
With the end of Season 2, we saw the death of Magneto and a grieving Professor X. That grief could and should've led to a greater tease of Onslaught, but could he still come back in a new way? Maybe an evil resurrected Magneto? Or could Apocalypse's crystal play a part in the origin? Not having the foe leads to too many questions.
What Actually Happened To Nightcrawler At The End Of 'X-Men '97' Season 2?
To stop Apocalypse and save Gambit, Rogue made a deal with the Celestial, Eson the Searcher, to gain the power to stop the villain by trading her life for his. But after Rogue saved the man she loved and the power left, she lived due to the selflessness of her half-brother, Nightcrawler.
We know Nightcrawler died, but we don't know what actually happened to him. Was he taken to another reality? Did the Celestial consume his life force? Not seeing a body leaves the door open for yet another mutant return, but that only leaves us wondering what happened to the hero after he gave up his life for someone he loved.
Is Apocalypse Really Dead?
The big twist in X-Men '97 Season 2 was that Gambit had killed Apocalypse, and now his essence was residing in Gambit's body. Once that essence was trapped in a crystal and Apocalypse was defeated, it made us wonder a couple of things about the true fate of the villain.
How could a character like Apocalypse be killed in the first place and, more than that, how is his spirit thriving in a crystal? Could we see him again in the future trying to find a new vessel like Onslaught? Apparently, killing Apocalypse is one thing, but explaining how he died and could return is far more confusing.
Will We See The Brood Again?
In a single episode of the season, Wolverine, Morph, and other people tied to Weapon X and adamantium travel to a secret facility to get Logan's metal claws back. But what they find instead is a lab overrun by the alien Brood.
The Brood had been teased in X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997), but they have yet to have a true moment against the X-Men. With this being the closest battle we've seen, it makes us wonder if the X-Men will ever face a Brood invasion again, considering how dangerous they were in a single episode.
Where Are The Missing Mutants Teased In 'X-Men '97' Season 2?
At the end of X-Men '97 Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2, we see Forge in front of a board of missing and dead mutants like Kitty Pryde. However, these characters are never explored again, save for seeing Magik's death and Colossus' grief.
Because of this, we are left wondering if characters like Kitty Pryde will ever make an appearance, considering they are still missing. There's still hope for X-Men '97 Season 3, but it's a shame we have yet to see other beloved characters outside of the main cast.
