Who Is Mister Sinister In ‘X-Men ‘97’ Season 2 (And What Happened To Him In S1)?
X-Men ‘97 (2024) Season 2 on Disney+ has already proven to be a return to form for Marvel’s merry mutants. But it’s also raised questions over who else could appear in the Apocalypse-centric season. This includes one of the Summers family’s greatest foes, Mister Sinister.
With so much happening in the first few episodes of the series, there hasn’t been a chance to know for certain what is up with Mister Sinister. But as more fans begin to wonder, it makes a recap of what happened to him prior to X-Men ‘97 Season 2 all the more important, on top of whether he could appear again.
What Happened to Mister Sinister in ‘X-Men ‘97’ Season 1?
In X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997), Mister Sinister was a background villain who made moves against the X-Men but was always hard to nail down. When he set his sights on Scott Summers and Jean Grey towards the end of the series, it also set up the larger plans we never saw play out.
X-Men ‘97 capitalized on that when he took Scott and Madelyne Pryor’s son, Nathan Summers, from them. Not only did her realizing that he made her a clone of Jean Grey break her mind, but he also infected Nathan with a techno-organic virus.
Mister Sinister not only served as the reason Nathan Summers was sent to the future, but he also worked with Bastion on his new Prime Sentinel project. In the end, while facing down the X-Men, Jean Grey unleashed her Phoenix powers and stripped all of the enhancements Sinister had done to himself, making him look old and weak. This also allowed Morph to get closure for the years Sinister tortured him.
Mister Sinister Remains an Important X-Men Villain
When it comes to great X-Men villains, the Sentinels, Magneto, and Apocalypse represent the importance of power. But Mister Sinister was never about that. He instead saw the X-Men as tools for his experimentation more than anything else.
His desire to create the ultimate being through experimenting on mutants has left him without humanity and also leaves him with a twisted sense of humor. But because he’s so used to cloning himself, it’s hard to find the original and stop him once and for all. He’s an elusive and slimy foe but also someone who, more than anything, challenges the minds of the X-Men.
What makes Sinister such an important foe, above all else, is the narrative impact he has had on the Summers family. If Magneto is Professor X’s rival and Sabretooth is Wolverine’s, then Mister Sinister is that to the Summers clan.
Because of this, he’s set in motion more than a few twisted moments in the series that also include the origin of Nathan Summers and his affliction and transportation to the future. To Sinister, Nathan was the closest thing to the specimen he was looking for and didn’t care what this meant for those involved. Even powerless in X-Men ‘97, it’s safe to say he could still be dangerous.
Will Mister Sinister Appear in ‘X-Men ‘97’ Season 2?
The main question that remains is whether Mister Sinister will return in X-Men ‘97 Season 2 or not, and, at this point, it’s hard to say, but all points lead to no. There are many reasons why this wouldn’t be possible, but the most glaring is that in a season focusing so much on Apocalypse, any distractions from that that don’t make sense wouldn’t work.
There’s also the fact that Mister Sinister is incredibly weak and, at the very least, trying to regain his strength and research. Season 2 would then serve as the perfect off-season to set up his return in another season. But just because it doesn’t make sense for him to return doesn’t mean it couldn’t still happen.
X-Men ‘97 Season 1 proved that the sky really is the limit for who can and can’t return in the series, as the first episode alone brought back the Master Mold. Therefore, there’s a hope that Mister Sinister could at least be teased as being hard at work while the X-Men are lost in time. But while the answer isn’t clear, the mark he left on the series alone proves why fans are ready for more.
