What Happened At The End Of ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1, Episode 5?

After losing time all day thanks to the Truesight mushrooms, Rosemary drives Tom home. He waits there for his son, Evan. When Evan arrives home, he rushes to the house, enraged and embarrassed by his father. Evan tells Tom that he had a good night and that if it were up to his father, Evan would be locked away in an office all day.

Tom proceeds to tell Evan that one day he’s going to regret saying that all Tom wants to do is control him. As Tom walks away and goes up the stairs, Evan continues to yell at his father about why they never leave the island before threatening to leave and never come back. That’s when the fireworks begin, and Tom rushes to the bathroom as if to throw up.

While trying not to barf, he gets a vision, revealing to the viewer that he and his wife tried to leave the island once. While on the boat, his wife lost her vision and ended up in a vegetative state. That’s when things turn even more terrifying as Tom looks to his right. The doorway is pitch black, and an entity speaks indistinctly to him. The episode ends there.

Island Lore Revealed In ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1, Episode 5

Wyck and Tom getting the Truesight mushroom in Widow's Bay

Widow’s Bay continued dropping hints as to the mysteries and lore prevalent on the island. To help you keep track of important details, we’ve written all the island lore revealed in Season 1, Episode 5, “What to Expect on Your Trip.”

 • Truesight mushrooms only grow on the island and take you where you need to go, not where you want to go.

 • The Boogeyman apparently lived in a small home in a field. He lost his mind and went out and killed a bunch of young women. When they tried to kill the Boogeyman by shooting him, he didn’t die. So, they buried him in the basement and sealed the whole thing in concrete.

 • Anyone who goes into the Boogeyman’s house doesn’t come out.

 • The burned page that Wyck recovered from the church said, “I do not comprehend the nature of the curse that has fallen on the island. I do know that its heart beats inside the cylinder that my husband wears around his neck. Who will crush my throat? His hands? This plague? Death comes for each of us, but I fear to me first. I know not how, but who. Of course, he’s here with me, so I say all of this in jest, and with that, I retire.”

 • The burned page was part of Sarah Westcott Warren’s journal. She married Richard Warren, Widow’s Bay’s founding father.

 • The cylinder referenced in the burned page could be the necklace Richard wore.

 • There’s only been one plague in Widow’s Bay, and that was in 1702.

 • When leaving the island, it can blind you and leave you a shell of yourself. That’s what happened to Tom’s wife, Lauren.

What Supernatural Things Happened In ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1, Episode 5?

The main supernatural thing that happened in Widow’s Bay Season 1, Episode 5, had to do with the entity that Tom experienced at the end of the episode. Up to this point, Tom was just seemingly tripping on shrooms and losing time. As a viewer, it’s almost easy to brush aside everything that happened to Tom until this moment, but this ending can’t be brushed aside.

As the lore goes, the Truesight mushrooms take you where you need to go and not where you want to. At the end of the episode, when Tom begged God to protect his son so the same thing that happened to his wife wouldn’t happen to him, a god answered. It just wasn’t the God that Tom was seeking absolution from.

From a viewer’s perspective, it seems like the entity or god that haunts the heart of this island answered Tom. Not only that, it saw Tom. And when Tom turned to the doorway, he saw it, too, leading to that terrified look in his eye. That right there might be the scariest thing that has happened on Widow’s Bay so far. If this force is responsible for all the death and disaster on this island, what is going to happen once it acknowledges Tom?

‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1, Episode 5 Ending Explained
