Producers Gave The Wayans Brothers A Bad Deal For ‘Scary Movie 3’
Marlon Wayans explained in his interview why he and his brothers chose to leave the franchise they created and the hard truths they had to face in the process. While working with the notorious Weinsteins to get their movies off the ground, Marlon mentioned that they got a bad deal on the first film, stating, “The first one, we got a crappy deal, definitely. But the second one, we got a good deal on the second one…”
Following the success of the original Scary Movie 2 (2001) allowed them to get a much better deal. But even after working on an idea for the third movie, the powers that be refused to grant them a deal comparable to what they got with the first film after being promised around $30 million. Feeling shorted, the Wayans never stuck around for the third film, and the rest was history.
What was more shocking than anything else, however, was that Scary Movie 3 (2003) was based on an idea the Wayans Brothers had introduced. Worse than that, they only found out through reading the news.
The Scary Movie Franchise Is Better off With The Wayans Brothers
Following the departure of the Wayans Brothers, there was a massive shift in the tone of the franchise almost immediately. While headed by Airplane! (1980) creator David Zucker, the humor wasn’t the same. Nevertheless, Scary Movie 3 wasn’t a bad film. However, following the third one, quality continued to dip.
Ultimately, the franchise struggled without the Wayans Brothers, and it could be seen as karma, considering their creation was stolen and their ideas taken on top of it. The Wayans weren’t afraid to confirm this by saying in the interview, “They took the franchise from us, took it from us. And then they stole the idea for the third one.”
To see the brothers back with the series they started has been a delightful treat that makes Scary Movie (2026) feel more special. The mark left behind by the Scary Movie franchise can’t be understated, as it changed comedy for the 2000s and is still remembered fondly today.
