The latest musical biopic, Michael (2026), has renewed interest in legendary singer and dancer Michael Jackson. Michael captures the early years of Michael Jackson’s (Jaafar Jackson) life, from his lonely childhood to the height of his fame in the 1980s. It also touches lightly on Jackson’s notable love for and interest in film.

Jackson was a film aficionado who particularly loved Star Wars and Marvel. He had big dreams of becoming a movie star and often petitioned studios and directors for roles, including that of Spider-Man and Jar Jar Binks. Given his immense fame and controversies, most studios were wary of including him in movies for fear he’d be distracting. Men in Black II (2002) marks one film where Jackson’s dream of an appearance actually came true, though it certainly didn’t come easily.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Men in Black II’ Cameo

Michael Jackson's cameo in Men in Black 2

In Men in Black II, Jackson appears in a brief cameo as himself during a video call with Chief Zed (Rip Torn). During the call, he updates Zed on an extraterrestrial situation involving a race of aliens known as Durlocks. He reports that the Durlocks have departed and signed a peace treaty, evading some kind of conflict. Zed tells Jackson, “Good work,” and prepares to leave when Jackson reminds him that Zed promised him a position in Men in Black.

The Men in Black Chief informs Jackson he’s still working on an “Alien Affirmative Action program.” Jackson insists that wasn’t part of the deal and that he could be “Agent M” before Zed hangs up on him. It’s a funny cameo, and it’s pretty adorable when the singer brings up “Agent M.” Jackson appears again briefly when Zed puts him on the phone with Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) to distract the alien, and Jackson brings up his “Agent M” idea again. Although it’s a fun cameo, it came with quite a few behind-the-scenes challenges.

Why Michael Jackson’s ‘Men in Black’ Cameo Was Complicated

Michael Jackson was a fan of the first Men in Black (1997), stirring his interest in appearing in Men in Black II. Unlike with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) and X-Men (2000), where executives rebuffed Jackson’s cameo attempts, his attempts to get into Men in Black II were successful. The singer had a record deal with Sony Music, and Sony Pictures produced Men in Black II, giving him a strong connection to the movie.

Additionally, director Barry Sonnenfeld had actually offered Jackson a cameo in the first Men in Black film. He wanted to include Jackson’s photo in a scene that shows photos of several celebrities, all of whom are identified as undercover aliens in the movie. The list included celebrities like Al Roker and George Lucas, but Jackson refused to be among them. However, when Men in Black II came around, he wanted in.

In Sonnenfeld’s memoir, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time, he mentioned Sony executive Amy Pascal thought Jackson’s appearance would be great. However, Sonnenfeld was a little more wary, given the abuse allegations against Jackson, making him question if Jackson was “damaged goods.” Still, he went along with the cameo and again offered the singer a role as an alien.

Jackson, though, had a different idea. He wanted to be an agent and to wear the Men in Black suit. Sonnenfeld admits in his memoir that Jackson’s idea was tough for him to “swallow.” He ultimately relented and allowed the singer to portray an agent in the iconic Men in Black suit. Still, the cameo took on a bit of a meta twist, as Jackson’s insistence on being “Agent M” reflected his real-life pleas. Technically, he still played an alien, as the “Alien Affirmative Action” phrase insinuates he’s extraterrestrial.

The cameo almost didn’t happen because of Jackson’s demands. While his demands complicated matters, one can see the issue from both perspectives. Sonnenfeld wanted a cameo he thought would make the most sense for Men in Black and Men in Black II’s cheeky celebrity storyline, but Jackson wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream of wearing the Men in Black suit. In the end, the pair seemed to find a middle ground, and the cameo worked well.

Should You Watch ‘Men in Black II’?

If Michael left you interested in Jackson’s acting career and cameo appearances, you may want to tune into Men in Black II. The movie marked his final feature-film appearance before his passing and may be a nostalgic one for his fans to revisit. As for fans of Men in Black, the sequel is a bit more complicated since it doesn’t measure up to the original. Men in Black II relies too heavily on rehashing the original’s plot points and lacks the creativity and high stakes of the first movie.

Although it’s not the greatest sequel, it’s satisfactory. The visual effects are good, and it maintains the fun and entertainment of the original movie. Fans of the franchise will definitely want to watch it at least once. In the vein of Galaxy Quest (1999) and Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Men in Black II is perfect for a good time and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Kay and Jay reunite to provide our best, last and only line of defense against a sinister seductress who levels the toughest challenge yet to the MIB's untarnished mission statement – protecting Earth from the scum of the universe.
