Dragon Ball DAIMA is the latest series to come out in the Dragon Ball franchise, and it didn’t disappoint. Not only were there more than a few moments to make fans happy, but it’s also spawned rumors of a new 3D film possibly coming in 2027.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is only a small part of the larger Dragon Ball world, and with it, some movies and shows can help make sense of what’s to come. Here’s what you should watch before the rumored Dragon Ball DAIMA movie.

01

Dragon Ball Z

Though Dragon Ball is technically the series that started it all, due to its popularity explosion in the West, Dragon Ball Z has become the genesis series for many fans of the story. Following Goku through his adult life, he and his friends and family take on many enemies and continue to grow in power as well.

To begin to understand the importance of DAIMA, especially its later seasons, where certain characters are integral to the story, Dragon Ball Z is a must-watch. Goku’s story has always been tied to the Demon Realm, and this series proves that more than any other. Honestly, it’s a great jumping-on point for anyone getting into anime in general.

The most recent film in the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, is the first 3D animated movie in the franchise and focuses primarily on Gohan and Piccolo. After Gohan’s daughter, Pan, is kidnapped by the Red Ribbon Army, it’s up to the two heroes to take on the corporation and their new androids to save her.

Super Hero is  a necessary watch because it could have ties to the potential DAIMA movie. That said, with the rumors that the film could be in 3D, Super Hero is a great way to see how that could work. Though divisive, the style helps the action pop and makes it even better for fans of the classic action of Dragon Ball Z.

As expected, Dragon Ball DAIMA is a must-watch before any potential film set in the same timeline. Taking place one year after the finale of Dragon Ball Z, DAIMA sees Goku and his friends wished into their child forms and whisked away to the Demon Realm to stop the Supreme King and return to normal.

The series has since become popular for canonizing Super Saiyan 4 Goku, as well as introducing Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta. Due to its more adolescent nature, Dragon Ball DAIMA is perfect to watch with a younger audience while still having entertaining action for adults.

Part of the fun of Dragon Ball DAIMA is seeing the heroes travel to the Demon Realm. With this new era of Dragon Ball that technically started with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods (2013), non-canon characters like Broly have started to become canonized in the main universe.

With all of that in mind, what makes Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn mandatory viewing before any DAIMA movie is its villain, a demon named Janemba. In the film, the demon uses his powers to resurrect the dead, and Goku and his friends have to stop him. Though it came later in the Dragon Ball Z movie series, it’s one of the most beloved entries and could be important to set up a DAIMA movie.
